A list of puns related to "Mfe"
I had a general question about getting into some of the higher ranked MFE programs such as NYU, Columbia, Cornell, or Princeton), how much weight is held on what school you attended for undergrad when it comes to applying to these high ranked programs? I didn't go to a top school for undergrad (Rutgers) so I don't know if I would be wasting my time applying to those schools if they will dismiss their considerations once they see Rutgers. Is there anyone who has any experience or knowledge about this that could help?
Hello,
I am an econ major on the 'math for econ 1' waitlist. I am currently #5. This is because my prerequisites took a while to get approved. I have heard that mfe is a large class; does anybody think I will make it off the waitlist by the time the semester starts?
Also, how hard is MFE 1 in terms of getting an A? Trying to pull my gpa up this semester. I did pretty well in my precalc class.

Early Phase 1
Start Date: Oct 18, 2019
Completion Date: Dec 24, 2020
Brief Summary:
Serotonin and oxytocin play a role in fear conditioning and fear extinction learning, psychological processes that are critically involved in psychiatric disorders such as posttraumatic stress disorder (PTSD). Specifically, administration of oxytocin has been shown to facilitate fear extinction in humans. Similarly, substances that release serotonin and oxytocin such as MDMA have been shown to enhance the extinction of fear memory in animals. However, there are no data on the effects of MDMA on fear extinction in humans. Therefore, the primary aim of this study is to investigate the role of acute serotonin release in the effects of fear extinction. MDMA will be used as pharmacological tool to induce serotonin release in this study.
What is strange is that the study was supposed to complete Dec 24, 2021, but was completed Dec 24, 2020 AND it was updated 2 years later, 2022? Maybe the 2020 is a typo.

So i've heard of some horror stories when it comes to taking him for his lecture...Any advice on how to pass? What should I focus on the most; the videos, the lectures, or the book?
I come from a non-quant econ + business program at a T50 University. I've working in M&A IB and AM and found that IB was very much not for me (being emotionally challenging rather than intellectually) and I love AM but want to future-proof my skill-set as the industry moves in a quanty direction. I would be lying if I denied I was also attracted by the pay-stubs, but I do genuinely like the stimulating aspect of the math, stats, and programming behind quant.
I want to stay in AM/HF (currently at a large AM in a non-quant role), but am considering going to the quant side. I'm taking math courses with a T10 university online part-time and the plan is to get Calc 2, Calc 3, PDE/ODE, Lin Alg, Probability, and maybe an analysis course prior to applying to MFEs ~ 2 years from now.
Would this be sufficient to be competitive for MFEs/MFins? I understand programming experience is also necessary. Would R and Python certificates suffice or would I need formal coursework in those? (I have taken a python based data science class with an A- and a R based grad level math and stat for econ class with an A-).
I ordered the $60 2 in 1 CD that ended up becoming $80 including shipping and it hauled all the way from the Russian federation, I was desperate to listen to my favorite album on CD but have seen little to no merch on it. Alas, I caved in and bought it .. it is supposedly arriving today so I would let y'all know how it looks and how it sounds on my speakers. So fucking Stoked

I am struggling to find all related past exams for IFM since 2000 due to names of exams that you probably didnβt hear of. Are there any mavens in here that would tell how IFM mutated throughout the past two decades? Also, can i find most of past yearβs questions from different sources other than SOA? My last inquiry would be: is it worth to go through the text books from IFM syllabus and study them beside TIA/CA?
Thanks a bunch.
Anybody applied for the mfe program at uoft for 2022 ? Wondering what questions come on the video interview. Any help will be appreciated!! π
Mine is still in awaiting decision process and it has been three months. I see people getting the offerβ¦

After clearing my S drive and updating from 1.08 to 1.12, I can't access my S drive through the Xbox. On windows I can clearly see and access all folders, but on my Xbox the entire drive comes up empty. I can't change directories in retro arch or through MFE.
Google has been pretty useless, help me out reddit!

Hello, Iβm applying for MFE programs, but I kinda been doing some thinking about what would happen if I didnβt end up liking quant finance or ended up realizing it wasnβt for me. Iβm worried that with the degree being so specialized, I donβt know what it would be used for if I end up not being a quant. Does any where else know where an MFE could be useful if I donβt end up being a quant?
Hi, will be applying either 2023 or 2024, depending on when I finish my graduation requirements. Will be graduating with a concurrent masters' degree.
Undergrad done at a HYPSW school.
Major: Mathematics (BS), Computer Science or Statistics (MS)
Coursework: Theoretical Mathematics, Stochastic Processes, Applied Statistics, Statistical Learning, Machine Learning, Deep Learning, ML Applications (Computer Vision, NLP), ML Theory, Algorithms (all grad level except Mathematics)
GPA: 4.0
GRE: Not taken yet, but (from practice tests) anticipating max Quantitative, much higher variance for Verbal but still expecting it to be around 165-168
Recommendations: Unsure about the quality of these...can probably get one solid one because I helped publish a paper in Machine Learning, the other two are up in the air.
Extracurriculars: Software Development @ FAANG, Investment Logic Engineering @ Bridgewater, startup/VC experience, ML Research (with publications), TA/Grader for Math/ML courses (basically all over the place)
Also first-generation college student if that helps. Looking to obtain an MFE if I don't get into buy-side quant finance right out of undergrad, and I'm really interested in Columbia MFE and possibly CMU Computational Finance. Given my background, would it be worthwhile doing one of these programs to try to break into quant? I'm also currently only a junior in university so I have some time, so any tips would also be welcomed. Thanks!
Currently looking to apply to MFE programs, but Iβm in my fourth year of undergrad studying math/physics. Most of my research background has been related to physics / computational math, but some is tangentially related to finance (betting markets). I have one or two courses that directly relate to quant finance, and no internship experience in finance. Is it common for MFE candidates to have similar non-financial backgrounds, or do most successful MFE candidates have some prior experience in finance during undergrad?
Apologies if this is a common / basic question - googling around for this only gave answers from 10+ years ago so thought Iβd ask it here.
Hi friends, I am interested in MFE graduate program but not sure if my GPA is sufficient, which is just around 3.2, in finance. I would be thankful if anyone has information over the cutoff grade, or anything related to the admission aside from what covered already in the school page regarding the program. Tks so much dearly.
Hey people! I've created a discord server for Masters in Financial Engineering. Feel free to join: https://discord.gg/ccM4RmzP
Hello all, I hope this post finds you well. I'm looking for some advice regarding on whether I should pursue an MFE to break into the quant sphere. I'm currently studying Business in a target school in Singapore, and I'm specialising in Business Analytics ( which would help to hone my coding and data analytics skills ). I have some professional and personal experience in value investing / financial modelling as well.
I would like to break into the quant sphere, and so far this is my plan - take the GMAT/GRE in my last year of uni ( with about 6months-1year of prep), and hopefully I can pursue an MFE at Cornell, Columbia, UCBerkeley, Princeton or Baruch ( based off QuantNet rankings ). My concern is that costs of tuition and accommodation are high, and I fear I may not be able to get a scholarship.
Which leads to the question of - is an MFE from a top school worth it? and even if I do get an MFE in the US, would it be wiser to work in the US for a couple of years to earn some capital? Or should I take a pay-cut and come back to Singapore to be closer with family? Do I need an MFE to break into the quant industry?
Any help is greatly appreciated. Thank you for your time.
I am looking for some advice. Currently I am working as Software Dev in FAANG and have received a Software Dev offer from D.E. Shaw. My end goal is to become a Quant Trader in a prop shop/ Hedge Fund in buy-side in US. For that I am currently applying to MFE (Financial Engineering), MSCF (Computational Finance) programs in the universities: Berkeley, CMU, Columbia and Cornell (2022 batch)
I am also applying for interviews in small prop shops for quant trader/ researcher roles in buy side to gain experience in this field before getting Masters.
I want some advice about which side should I prefer ( Software developer in D E Shaw or continue applying for Quant Trader in prop shops ) based on following considerations:
a. Which guy would you hire for Quant Trading from the top schools ? One who was SDE in a top hedge fund or one who has Trading experience in small mostly unknown prop shops?
b. Which of these roles would increase my chances of getting an admission in these schools?
Some other information which might help:
a. I will join Software Developer as a senior engineer v/s Trader as a junior trader
b. I will have around 8-9 months of experience in either firms before I join MFE / MSCF which starts around august next year.
c. I am keen on going to the above mentioned colleges only, I would rather wait here and re apply with more prep next year if I don't get it this year.
The admission statistics look pretty intimidating. Iβm wondering if its just a numbers game or is there more to it.
Iβve heard both that they are βfeeder schoolsβ for top hedge funds and firms and also that they are a cash grab scheme. Iβve also heard that youβre much better off doing an MS in CS instead if you wanna break into quant finance. Looking at the curriculums of these programs, they feel very watered down and not rigorous enough tbh- almost like a waste of a masters education. I feel like theyβre not worth it unless they are from a top school like Baruch.
What are your thoughts on this?
Iβm personally leaning towards a BS in math and CS with an MS in mathematical finance, which is very theory heavy. I think the CS background and advanced math skills in a finance context make a good combination. But Iβm open to other options.
I am a third-year @ Cornell studying stats and cs (minor) and flirting with the idea of continuing into grad school next year with a Financial Engineering program.
I have pretty stellar grades, doing a cool ML research internship this summer, but I do not think I am exceptional or extraordinary to be hired out of undergrad, which is why I think I might benefit from the training and career preparation that comes with a FE program.
I know there are a lot of cash-cow master programs out there nowadays (in general, not necessarily just FE), so I want to know if an MFE is considered worthwhile. I'd be considering programs like Cornell's MFE, CMU, etc.
I would primarily be interested in quantitative trading, and not purely research, which I have also heard that MFEs are not quite considered for the latter anyways.
Iβm a rising senior majoring in math with a minor in CS, just planning ahead. Does this sound like a good plan or is it useless/flawed?
Hi! Iβm an undergrad majoring in Econ at a target school in Singapore.
I want to get into quant, and was considering applying to MFE (and similar) programs at top US schools. However, Iβve been reading a lot of mixed reviews about it.
For people who have done the program or work in quant roles, whatβs your review of the program?
A little bit of background on myself: I would consider Math and coding to be my top skills, but I do not have a very strong formal background in either due to my major. I have done a lot of stats (Iβm doing a Finance specialization), but not much of calculus (beyond calc II) or stochastic processes. Iβm doing a minor in computing and I have an internship as a data science intern.
Given my background, would an MFE add value since itβll give me a formal backing in both math & coding, or will I gain more from doing a Masterβs in something else/not doing a Masterβs altogether?
Thanks!
I graduated with a BA in Econ but I didnβt really take a lot of quant classes back then because my algebra fundamentals were weak at the time and anything beyond calculus 2 was daunting. Now Iβm relearning a lot of math (inspired after taking discrete math) and Iβve worked on my fundamentals. I have a new love and appreciation for math. Iβve always loved finance and thought about being a quant but didnβt think I would ever be learning math again.
Iβve been learning to code as well and Iβm going to try switching to a software engineer for a few years and take math classes at my local community college. After a few years of working as a developer and strengthening my math maturity, should I go back to school and do an
MFE, MS in CS, MS in applied math or a PHD/MS economics
Thank you
Sorry in advance- I know this may not be a good place to ask but Iβm trying to gauge so I can plan thus year accordingly.
Rising senior Major: Math Minors: Physics & CS
GPA: 3.68 at current college & 3.95 at a local community college where I did my first two years.
Although this might drop since my classes in senior year are very hard. Also have several W and Pass/Fail on my transcript
Experience: tons of work experience and recently joined a research team in Data Science. Also on the EBoard of two large academic clubs
I am thinking about applying to MFE starting next September but I'm wondering if I even have a shot. So, I decided to ask reddit and give me a brutally honest answer :).
Background: graduating from Carleton in June with a major in finance.
CGPA: 10.19/12 (3.7 GPA if converted. I think)
Internships: 1 at a insolvency firm before covid 19.
Teaching assistant: 3 semesters and 3 different courses ( 2 with the same prof).
Research experience: 1 this summer where I lead a research topic with assistance from professor
Coding experience: 3 projects with 2 relevant to finance and one was a passion project. I know python, Java, c#.
Clubs: Was on the schools investment fund
GRE: hoping for a 165+Q and 160+V
Thoughts. Any room for improvements or tips I should follow? Any and all feedback is welcomed.
