A list of puns related to "Methuen Publishing"
Hello all!
I was recently gifted a couple of old Tintin albums from my brother-in-law (bless him) for Christmas and after close to 25 years, Iβve fallen back in love with my childhood comic!
Anyway, I was just curious if there was a way to determine the year of print of any Tintin album. For example, in this paperback print of Explorers on the Moon published by Magnet, do I just look at the latest year on the page?
IE: βReprinted 1979, 1981, 1982, and 1983β
So 1983?
And would this method apply to the b&w English facsimile editions?
Also, if my understanding is correct, ISBN numbers only tell us which edition the book is right? Not when exactly the copy I have was printed?
Is there a way to accurately tell or can I only roughly gauge the time period?
Any help would be appreciated and apologies if this has been asked before!
THANK YOU!

Some sad news. Leslie Lonsdale-Cooper has passed away at 97 (source). She, along with her colleague Michael Turner, were responsible for the translation of HergΓ©'s works in English. They translated all 24 standard colour Tintin books, four black-and-white Tintin books (Cigars was translated by Michael Turner and Tess Harrow), all five Jo, Zette and Jocko stories, two Quick and Flupke books, the original 1986 Tintin and Alph-art publication, Popol Out West and the three Tintin movie books (not written by HergΓ©): Tintin and the Golden Fleece, Tintin and the Blue Oranges and Tintin and the Lake of Sharks.
They were the ones who convinced Methuen to take a chance and publish two Tintin books in English in 1958. It wasn't an easy task; the series had already gone through two failed launches in English in 1951 and 1952. They agreed to translate the early books for free. Had it not been for their belief in and passion for the series, we would quite possibly never have gotten Tintin in English. After all, the launch of the series in America by Golden Press in 1959 (using different translations) also failed.
Having read most of the stories in French, I can say that, not only did they translate the words that HergΓ© wrote, they also retained the spirit of his work and the 'voice', so to speak, of his characters; not an easy thing to do. Indeed, HergΓ© himself was delighted with his English translations, and they frequently communicated during their production. Having read other translations, I also know what we could have gotten from people who only saw the translations as a job.
This is truly the end of an era. She was the last major person involved in the English Tintin translations left alive. Michael Turner died in 2009, and Neil Hyslop, with his excellent lettering of the panels, died in 2015.
Here is an excellent interview with Leslie Lonsdale-Cooper and Michael Turner from 2004, where they explain their translation process and the early days of the series in English. Also, read here to learn more about her work, which includes much more than HergΓ©'s works.
R.I.P Leslie Lonsdale-Cooper.

... keep reading on reddit β‘I don't want to step on anybody's toes here, but the amount of non-dad jokes here in this subreddit really annoys me. First of all, dad jokes CAN be NSFW, it clearly says so in the sub rules. Secondly, it doesn't automatically make it a dad joke if it's from a conversation between you and your child. Most importantly, the jokes that your CHILDREN tell YOU are not dad jokes. The point of a dad joke is that it's so cheesy only a dad who's trying to be funny would make such a joke. That's it. They are stupid plays on words, lame puns and so on. There has to be a clever pun or wordplay for it to be considered a dad joke.
Again, to all the fellow dads, I apologise if I'm sounding too harsh. But I just needed to get it off my chest.
Do your worst!
I'm surprised it hasn't decade.
For context I'm a Refuse Driver (Garbage man) & today I was on food waste. After I'd tipped I was checking the wagon for any defects when I spotted a lone pea balanced on the lifts.
I said "hey look, an escaPEA"
No one near me but it didn't half make me laugh for a good hour or so!
Edit: I can't believe how much this has blown up. Thank you everyone I've had a blast reading through the replies π
It really does, I swear!

Hi all,
I have been a long time Tintin fan. Grown up with this, I always thought would I ever have enough money to buy Tintin as a gift for myself. With my son turning - the timing was perfect.
So I set upon the journey a few months ago - and buying a few books was easy - but what followed next! wow!
Right off the bat, you could really understand how things had changed. The newer hardbooks were great - but something was off!
Hyslop.
You may think it did not matter much, but it did. As soon as I discovered this, I felt this vacuum in the set of books I had. Add to that the pure white glossy pages. Note that these are the Egmont set that have been printed in China. They felt soulless. So I then set out to do what is the only logical thing to do. Build my Hardcover modern set and complement it with another set of used books for reading!
Alas it is quite difficult to nail them down in Americas. So I had to resign myself to the lottery a lot of times but then I learnt a few naunces.
I think the best choices of publication are
Casterman
Methuen
Mammoth
Magnet
With these you are surely getting the right font and paper feel.
I tried my luck with Little Brown. But these are primarily the newer set like Egmont printed in China. if you do get your hands on the ones printed in Spain - They feature glossy pages, but they have Hyslop lettering. Atlantic - Little Brown gets you the right font, with matte pages - but the paper seems very thin and you can actually see the story color and lines from the other side. Seems blurry. The feel is just off. I nearly have this full set which I plan to sell off and find a new set - even at the cost of lower condition of older books.
Coming back to the hardcovers - there is some hope. Farshore which is basically Egmont - seems to have changed their printers. Now they seem to be printed in Romania - this means - the page is matte and not glossy anymore! I got a new harcover of Cigars of Pharoah from them and what a surprise! Hooray!
Now if there was any way to get Hyslop back!!
Happy to post any pictures if anyone wants them.
Heard they've been doing some shady business.
Theyβre on standbi
BamBOO!
Pilot on me!!
Nothing, he was gladiator.
Dad jokes are supposed to be jokes you can tell a kid and they will understand it and find it funny.
This sub is mostly just NSFW puns now.
If it needs a NSFW tag it's not a dad joke. There should just be a NSFW puns subreddit for that.
Edit* I'm not replying any longer and turning off notifications but to all those that say "no one cares", there sure are a lot of you arguing about it. Maybe I'm wrong but you people don't need to be rude about it. If you really don't care, don't comment.
When I got home, they were still there.
I won't be doing that today!

This morning, my 4 year old daughter.
Daughter: I'm hungry
Me: nerves building, smile widening
Me: Hi hungry, I'm dad.
She had no idea what was going on but I finally did it.
Thank you all for listening.

Hey everyone! I am planning on making a YouTube video about my experience being a US Tintin fan! I have three spots open to anyone in the Americas who would like me to share their experience being a Tintin fan in a country where it is not known that well! If you would like to share your experience, you can include anything you'd like! I can keep you anonymous as well. Just reply or message me with your experience and you might be chosen for the video! My following is part of a different fandom who knows that I am a Tintin fan, which is why I'm making the video. I would like to share it with them. If you have any questions, please ask them!
