Hey guys, it's Christmas and I'm bored so I want to talk about one of my own favorite hobbies.
Warhammer 40k (or 40k for short) is a tabletop miniature wargame that is produced by UK company Games Workshop. From its humble beginnings in 1987 to the present day, it has spawned a large and dedicated community, many video games, books and even memes. There are many reasons for its popularity: its huge and expansive lore, its ridiculous and satirical setting, its myriad of unique factions, from the Space Marines (the superhuman warrior monks you've probably seen before) to the Necrons (the alien Terminator rip-offs), and most importantly, the tabletop game itself.
The tabletop game has spawned a rather large and active competitive scene, with players from all around the world competing in tournaments everywhere to prove they are the best at moving little plastic toys around.
To say that the game has been in a balanced state however would be a lie. Indeed, from Fish of Fury to 7th ed. Eldar, the game has seen its fair share of cheese and silly combos that would define the game meta.
This article is an example of one of those.
So, get comfortable, and let's get started. And for those wondering what I'm going to talk about, let's just say it need some ironing out.
Before we get too deep, I'd like to establish a few things about the game
Brawl is famous for being the most unbalanced smash game due to the entire meta revolving around Meta Knight (also ice climbers but to a much lesser extent) so what if we removed Meta Knight from the game? And since the ice climbers were also busted, letโs remove them to. What would be the issues regarding balance? I know that Olimar and Diddy Kong were considered really good. Which characters would get better?
This is gonna get more than a little rant-y:
So I just got done watching Milk's latest YouTube video, Double Up with Mortdog. In it, they discus a number of things, specifically Fiora carry to counter Cho'Gath and Akali. Milk says the strategy Mortdog recommends, specifically 6 challenger with Deathblade, IE, LW is garbage and that Fiora needs healing. Mortdog points out Fiora has healing on her ult which surprises Milk, who admits he doesn't know how much healing is on it, then admits he doesn't know what Leona does. Mort says most players only know what 10-15 champions do, a point that really stuck with me.
Milk then goes on to play Fiora carry with Deathblade, IE, LW, but with 3 socialite instead of 6 challenger and continues complaining when he's only winning some rounds, asking what Fiora's even doing literally as she kills the Cho on Mortdog's board, because he cleared his own board and was strong enough to clear his ally's board also. Milk eventually pivots to Clapio and loses basically every round after.
Constantly, I see discussion about how only 3-4 comps are viable now, about how (Insert Champion) is broken without any counterplay, but so few people think beyond what is already common trying to look for solutions. 6 challenger Fiora isn't the most common comp in the game, but there's nothing wrong with it in concept. Then we have a top player dismissing it outright, not actually playing it, then insisting the carry is bad after not actually playing the suggested comp. And it's a comp suggested by the guy whose literal job is to look at the data to balance the game.
Remember how people talked about Akali in last patch? People insisted she was unplayable garbage and did nothing. Now she's broken and the best 5 cost, often worth pivoting your entire comp if you see her at level 7. I've heard arguement that there's no counterplay to her at all in twitch chat as I watch the streamer playing her hit a 4 loss streak because she couldn't deal with Mundo, Tahm, or Cho easily. Her aggro dropping ability, a very common citation about how impossible she is to kill, was the same last patch, when she was still "unplayable". Her damage buff didn't change this, and she still clears boards slower than the likes of Yone, Lux, etc. Her mechanics, not her stats, are the same, but some people found good comps for her, so now people say she's too strong citing the unchanged mechanics.

I will assume you've played some form of Tetris at least once in your life. Stack blocks, clear lines, you know how it goes. The puzzle game developed at USSR was first released in 1984 and took the world by storm. Tetris for the Nintendo Entertainment System was released in 1989 after a very interesting dispute for the rights of the game
The NES version of Tetris is strictly a single player game, and has some "weird" mechanics, judging by modern standards. The pieces (or tetraminos) take a considerable amount of time to move from one side of the screen to the other if you just hold down the buttons, making it very hard to play at higher levels, when pieces fall down faster. Also - unlike what happens in modern versions of the game - the order of the pieces is completely randomized, meaning you can go extremely long periods of time without a particular piece, making the game extra challenging.
Thor Aackerlund was the first master of the game. He was the champion of the 1990 Nintendo World Championship, which had NES Tetris as one of the featured games. He was the first to achieve a "maxout", which is a 999,999 point game. Some folks continued to actively play the game, and from 1990 to 2010, two other notorious players emerged: Harry Hong and Jonas Neubauer, both also achieving the "maxout".
In 2010 people got together and decided to hold a championship to decide who was the best NES Tetris player ever. The Classic Tetris World Championship (CTWC) was born. Contestants playside by side on two different consoles and the winner is whoever has the highest score at the end. With this, an active community was born and a new age for NES Tetris begins.
From 2010 to 2017, Jonas Neubauer completely dominated the scene, winning seven out of eight championships. He also posted YouTube videos teaching players how to play better. Eventually, one of the players who learned from his videos - Joseph Saelee, a 16 year old high-school kid - came to the tournament with no great ambitions and ended up facing Neubauer at the finals. Their battle was epic, and Joseph ultimately won.

This seems like a gem but you should always DYOR as well.
Before the game starts, let me remind you that grind will suck all the joy and excitement from whatever you doing. And we are settling for a long run. So take your time and don't get burned out in the next month by gathering resources or killing zombies for 12 hours a day. It's a marathon not a sprint. You don't own to anyone becoming like an Elite Dangerous or Eve Online pilots who wasted months on mind killing grind to get the badass ships and then would lose all reason to be in the game because he was there for the grind in the first place. This MMO, we here together for each other - to socialize and do stuff for fun, rage, excitement, wanderlust and happiness. So ignore on how you "suppose to play correctly". Choose the character that you actually would enjoy having every day, choose profession that would bring a smile to your face, choose activity that you will feel good about it, choose interaction that will make you feel proud of yourself. Just enjoy the game.
Just looking at some of my favourite players who are icons and how many of them are actually playable in the meta. Thereโs really only a small number of icons that are really good in game and the vast majority just donโt fit the meta.
If EA can address the fullback at cb issues by upping defenders pace or throw out ridiculous cards for arguably fairly run of the mill players in real life like Fekir, Guendouzi, Sow and a raft of others. No offence to some of these players, but they couldnโt lace the boots of some of the iconic players throughout my life, yet these cards get ridiculous stat upgrades and the icons seem to remain the same year on year. EA is obviously not going for complete realism in their game and some cards will just fit the meta better, but why canโt they make some of these icons more playable. It seems almost insulting to the players how they translate in the game. There are common gold cards that play better than Giggs or several other icons. Shearer should be ridiculous yet he is bang average. Too many bad ones to mention.
Imagine a Keane, Scholes, Lampard or Pirlo with 80 plus a pace and better agility. Most Icon defenders have anti meta stats. Low pace, passing and agility, yet they will boost very average cards like crazy.
By the time prime icons are released, most are behind the game curve. Yes, the R9s and the handful of others are elite, but itโs only a tiny subset.
Would also make squads a lot more interesting.
Could be meta with operator, like Lion at it's peak strength, or just regular style like the 20 second meta.

I know this isn't a specific game dev question but wanted to share/vent with my fellow game devs in our community.
Facebook (Meta) has unpublished our game studio company page on their platform citing "Impersonation".
Our game company is called Metawe and has been for a while. So, it is interesting that this was never an issue until they rebranded. We have been operating just fine on the platform until this week. We incorporated back in 2015 and filled our trademark with the USPTO in 2017. All of this before their name change.
We have appealed but I guess we now wait. This is why we cannot let them influence or control the Metaverse, it will hurt small indies like us, one way or another.

We worked so hard to come up with our name, it is more than just a name for us, it has a deeper cultural connection to our heritage and an additional meaning for us as gamers. My ancestors were Nรชhiyawak (Cree) and I am Mรฉtis. In Cree "Pe Metawe" means to come and play. So we were inspired by that phase when naming our company. In addition as gamers, we believe games connect us together in a different meta space, thus Meta - We. Even our WIP Sci-Fi Indigipunk game is inspired from our heritage.
If Facebook takes this away it will be like being robbed twice, once for our hard work as game developers but also from a heritage standpoint.

Hey everyone,
So my partner and me are running with a 4 man squad. We have accomplished 11 missions so far and are running into a brick wall with the difficulty. Our mercs are like level 6/7 and we arent even making it to the final rooms with everyone alive, much less with a chance to kill the monsters in them.
Is the meta of the game to retire mercs and bring the levels back down or are we supposed to be winning these fights? I feel like we have a solid strategy and synergy with how we are playing but we are getting pummeled at this point... just was looking for pointers from a vet on what the 'gameplay loop' is, exactly. We love the strategizing and fighting, but hitting a brick wall like this is taking the wind out of our sails and we arent interested in lowering the difficulty, we want to beat the game 'as is', if you know what I mean.

I have spent a significant amount of time reading, discussing, and writing about high-level competitive gameplay. Throughout this article, I want to explain a few concepts helpful in conceptualizing and understanding how a โmetaโ can become defined, how the meta evolves, and what Ninja Kiwi can do to address perceived issues.
Some of the content provided in this article is not directly related to BTDB2. I want to provide a framework that allows players to understand the complex and nuanced subject of "the meta". I do tie in all concepts to their BTDB2 applicable counterpart.
For most of us, we understand the "meta" to be the collection of strategies employed at the highest level. In most competitive games, a meta naturally evolves as players discover stronger and stronger strategies over time. This an entirely natural function of competitive games. All competitive games have some sort of "meta".
Around Christmas in 2021 on the patch 1.0.5, the most popular BTDB2 loadout among top players is Dartling, Sniper, Ninja, or some derivative thereof. Pair this combination with an Obyn, and you have what the collective feels is the meta. I think something players should remember is that the "meta" is not only defined by the specific tower choices, but also the patch the game runs on, as well as the current date and time. This will become important later when I examine meta evolution.
I want to introduce to you the three psychographic profiles, loosely correlated to another set of profiles in another game. These are simple stereotypes to describe the way different players enjoy and perceive the game, and I find them useful to describe the types of players who are impacted by game development and "the meta".
