Warning: this story isn't very exciting) Backstory and Training: In August of this year, I experienced a runners high after a 6 mile run, which was the longest run I had completed up to that point (before this I was spending a lot of time playing pokemon go, walking and biking to catch pokemon, I ran with this group to hatch eggs). My girlfriend and her mom had already signed up for this half-marathon, and I decided I would sign up for it myself and continue to train.
Info about me: 27/m 5'7 and ~138 lbs
Training was kind of haphazard at first, with a long run on the weekends, and then just going out and seeing how I felt every day (3 miles one day, 5 the next, 4 the next, etc). I was loving it. This culminated in doing a fast "pace" run the day after a long run, and while I felt great afterwards, the next day one of my feet had some pain due to the shoe being tied too tight. I took it easy, did a bike ride and then eventually started running through the pain and it dissipated for the most part on its own.
This is when I started looking toward giving my workouts some reasoning behind them. I read through a book called Injury Free Running, and changed my schedule to a long run on the weekend, a tempo run mid-week, and then any day I didn't feel particularly sore doing 1-4 miles. I live near Chicago which has free 5ks in the parks at this time of the year, and I participated in those to test my speed and endurance (best time so far is 22:20) and I also have been sponsoring an 8k trail race for the past three years which I finished in 41:03.
At some point I got a little bit of runners toe two weeks to race day which complicated my training and had me worried about the half-marathon, but after draining the blister that formed under my nail it healed within a week. The nail is a bit purple now and it might fall off eventually, but no pain!
Anyway lets talk about the race:
Originally it was meant to be a point to point race ending in downtown Marshall, NC but was changed 48 hours prior to be a 'there and back' type race featuring a couple significant inclines. My goal was to finish it under 2 hours, so this had me a bit nervous. I threw my expectation out the window and just made a goal of finishing it.
Beginning of the race went off without incident. Everybody lined up, it was a crisp 39F partly cloudy morning. Race was supposed to start at 8:00 but ended up being 8:05:30something, no big deal. I was fe
