Marianne Dashwood and Mary Bennet

Does anyone else see a resemblance between Marianne from Sense & sensibility and Mary Bennet from Pride & prejudice? I’m almost finished with sense and sensibility, and I happened to notice that they share some similarities. Both of them are musically gifted (specifically with the piano), enjoy wallowing in sorrow, and enjoy solitary endeavours. Also, they often isolate themselves from any company, and don’t care for politeness, they don’t bother to make conversation with anyone unless they really want to. They both have defined and stagnant beliefs about love and relationships. Even their names are slightly similar.

I think that I get this impression because Marianne Dashwood is somber through the chief of the novel. When she is happier her disposition is much more lively and vivacious, which is very different to Mary Bennet. Mary seems to have a much more stable mind, and has a much more reserved manner.

Marianne Dashwood and Colonel Brandon vs Helen Mar Kimball

I was watching β€œSense and Sensibility,” a personal lifelong favorite. I realized that the age gap between the secondary romantic couple is comparable to that of the All-American prophet and his youngest β€œwife.” 16/35 and 14/37. I’m trying not to dismiss uncomfortable truths because they’re uncomfortable. My question to you, fellow exmos, is does it make me hypocritical to not be as disgusted by one as the other?

Elizabeth Bennett is an ENTP

I’ve seen a lot of people attempting to type Elizabeth Bennett from Pride and Prejudice. Her typing also seems to go all over the map. INFJ, ENFJ, ENFP, ESFP....

Here is my analysis and why I would type her as ENTP.

Ne: Elizabeth loves the ridiculous. She has a lively imagination and enjoys speculating. She is excited by new information and is able to see a variety of ways a scenario can play out. She is also able to quickly take in her surrounding and just as quickly be lost in her own thoughts. Her Ne allows her to be quite perceptive of things that are hidden.

Ti: Lizzy is known for her quick wit and sharp tongue. She is quite capable at debate and quick retorts. She is as accurate in her statements as her current knowledge allows. She is also willing to change her mind as the information changes, deconstructing her previous internal framework to create a new one rather than searching for biases to uphold her beliefs.

Fe: she isn’t interested in creating or being part of larger social harmony. However, she is aware of proper decorum in her society and plays by the rules as she sees fit. She will counsel her sisters and parents when they are being social embarrassments. She is also more concerned with her sisters feelings than with her own. Lizzy is also quite surprised by her feelings for Darcy. She doesn’t realize she is in love with him right away. An Fi user knows immediately that they are in love.

Si: as her inferior function, it does cause her issues. She gives weight to Wickham’s story because he gives so many details. To her, these details mean that he can’t be lying. This is problematic for her as she goes along with a lie due to leaning on a function she uses poorly.

When she realizes the truth, she reflects on her previous assumptions. She then returns to rebuild her Ti framework back up based on new Ne information.

I think many people type her as ENFP because in the beginning of the story she is adamant about marrying for love. This is usually seen as a hallmark of Fi. However, choosing a partner based on love is a basic HUMAN desire that ALL types naturally want, not just Fi users.

For comparison, look at Marianne Dashwood of Sense and Sensibility. She is an ENFP character written by Jane Austen. She is clearly an Ne-Fi user very extroverted in nature and also adamant to marry for love. Which she does.

Marianne and Lizzy couldn’t be more different.

What Reddit subs would JA characters frequent if they were in modern times and had Reddit? [a dumb shitpost I wrote instead of studying for my final tomorrow]

Emma Woodhouse would have an absolute HEYDAY on r/relationship_advise. She would know all about every situation and badger the OP to follow her very knowing advice.

Mr Knightley, considering how much he loved judging people, would probably scroll through r/amitheasshole doling out moral ultimatums right and left. But he’d also find community on r/gardening.

Sir Walter Elliot would post on subs like r/skincareaddition and r/malegrooming and r/malefashionadvise to explain exactly how well-looking for his age he was.

Anne Elliot would herself make a trending post on r/relationship_advise ( β€œMy [27f] old ex has come back into my life and I have no idea what to think”) but her other Reddit posts and comments would mostly be in r/Italianlearning and r/opera.

Sadly, Fanny Price would probably find some people to relate to in r/raisedbynarcissists. She’d be too shy to post but she’d lurk a lot , and one day she’d work up the courage to comment and would find comfort in the replies.

Lydia Bennet, well... that girl would likely find herself posting in some types of subs that, to use language befitting of Jane Austen, are not fit to be mentioned in the society of proper ladies and gentlemen.

Mr Collins might not use Reddit much himself, since he was too busy licking the ( hopefully proverbial) boots of his esteemed patroness Lady Cathrine, but he would probably be terribly shocked to one day find himself featured on the front page of r/choosingbeggars.

Elizabeth Bennet would head to r/femaledatingstrategy for a bit of help but she’d decide that the internet was not nearly so good at solving her problem as she herself was. She might very well be the one who posted about Mr Collins, but we would never know because she made absolutely sure her throwaway account couldn’t be identified. She would enjoy looking at memes on r/memes, and make more than a few very funny ones herself.

Mr Bennet would have a great time on r/books but he’d take like 5 days to reply to comments because if he wasn’t reading, he was fielding whatever drama his wife sent his way.

Feel free to add more, and if I think of any more myself I’ll make another post.

Edit: fixed a couple sub names

When do people come of age in Austen's novels?

I'm a little confused about when people are considered "adults" in Jane Austen. It really seems to vary, particularly for women.

I would assume that it's when girls 'come out' into society. But that age seems to really vary from person to person. Marianne Dashwood and Lydia Bennett, both 16, are 'out' in society and ready to be married, but Georgiana Darcy is the same age and not 'out' or of age? Also, Lydia is considered too young to be out, but Marianne isn't?

At the same time, Anne Elliot is considered too young to marry at 18, but Catherine Morland and Fanny Price, also 18, are getting married or being proposed to without any serious protest.

Then again, Anne Elliot is considered to be in danger of being a spinster when she's 26...so is there a general time someone is considered an adult? Is it at 16, since a lot of girls seem to be moving in society at that time? Or is it 18 or 21, since that's the age a lot of characters are in Jane Austen's novels? Like, would Lydia/Marianne/Georgiana be considered children or just a very young adults?

Since men operated under different social rules at that time, do they come of age at 21 or sometime earlier or later? Most of the men in Austen's novels are in their mid to late 20s I believe.

How well do you think Jane Austen characters from different novels would have gotten along with each other?

If they were to meet in a crossover-episode of some kind, how would it go? Admittedly i'm still working my way through the Jane Austen oeuvre (only the obvious ones so far, but i've read a bit about the others here and there) but it seems like most heroines have some similarities. The same goes for the love interests. I imagine Mr. Darcy and Mr. Knightley would like each other (though maybe Knightly might at first dissaprove of Darcy's introvertedness). I really wonder how someone like Caroline Bingley would treat someone like Emma, since she seems to respect wealth and status above all.

What are your thoughts?

I finished my first Austen book: Sense and Sensibility!

I recently posted a photo of my Jane Austen collection along with my goal of reading all her books this year. I stayed up past 1:00am to finish Sense and Sensibility and I loved it. Here are some of my thoughts, if you’re interested:

Austen’s writing style feels rather sarcastic, but not at all dismissive of regency culture. There’s real affection and genuine connection along with the humor.

It seems to me that Austen favored Sense over Sensibility. Both Elinor and Marianne had troubles and happy endings, but Elinor seemed to have a better time over the course of the book.

All John Dashwood ever talks about is money. He’s got a bit of a guilty conscious, but not guilty enough to disagree with Fanny over how he shares his money.

Lucy spent so much time trying to solidify her claim to Edward, but then she left him for his brother?! Girl!

Although I didn’t like Mrs. Jennings much at first, I came to really appreciate how genuine she was when Marianne was ill. I’m sure Mrs. Dashwood felt at least a little better knowing someone was looking after Marianne and Elinor.

I know many of these characters are supposed to be middle class, but having servants and not having to work feels pretty rich to me. I know industrialism hadn’t set in yet, but I wonder how people lived who couldn’t dress up every day and eat big meals and worry about social conventions.

Finally, I’m glad Colonel Brandon and Marianne waited a few years before they got together. 17 and 35 feels a bit weird to my modern perspective.

Those were my thoughts!! Next up will be Pride and Prejudice!

Thoughts about Mrs. Dashwood

I just remembered that Mrs. Dashwood is a widow!

So much of her behavior makes sense now! Austen tells us that she has the same romantic temperament that Marianne has, which is why she likes Willoughby so much, but I think her emotional state can also be explained by the first events in the novel.

Her husband is dead and her daughter-in-law is instantly trying to weasel her out of the house and all of the items Mr. Dashwood left to her and the girls. And, yes, she seems fine when they move to the cottage in Devonshire, but grief is tricky. There have to be some things that set her off.

I think that line from the 2008 miniseries sums it up perfectly when Mrs. Dashwood says that if she were still Mistress of Norland then her daughters wouldn't be treated badly (by Edward and Willoughby). If Mr. Dashwood were still alive, the girls would be provided for and protected from being mistreated by men. Or at least have someone who would act for them, rather than ignore them as John Dashwood does.

Anyway, thank you for coming to my TED talk. ;)

Which Jane Austen characters do you relate to the most?

Hi! I have no friends who like Jane Austen but I love to discuss and find out what people see themselves as.

Two Characters for me that always come to mine are Marianne Dashwood and Harriet Smith. Like Marianne I'm completely ran by my emotions, when I'm happy I am a really fun person to be around and when I'm sad I have to hardest time getting out of bed. I can't stand vulgar people and I trying to control my tounge but I'm brutally honest.

Like Harriet I'm way too easily influenced and care way too much what people think. Thankfully not far enough to be talked in and out of love but it's a huge problem of mine I'm working on ( Also super random but we also share a birthday!)

So who do you guys relate to?

My two cents on recs for things like Schitt's Creek

I've been seeing a lot of recs for shows like Schitt's Creek, and yet I think that's a harder question to answer than it seems, because it sort of depends on what people mean.

I think if you want a classic Riches to Rags story, Sense and Sensibility - the book or one of the miniseries or movie adaptations - is actually not a far shot. It's more serious than SC, but still relatively light, and much like on SC about a family that ends up losing all of their money and moving to a small town. Marianne Dashwood is pretty close to David and Moira in personality, even. It's obviously got huge differences, being a contemporary novel written in the 1800s, but there's the same emphasis on family, coming into your own, getting used to people around you you don't entirely understand.

There are also lots of shows where characters move to small towns - sometimes from "higher places", sometimes not. So if that's what you love about the show, I'd go for that type of media. While Parks and Rec initially begins with lifelong residents, the show actually gets even better when two outsiders come in and we see the town from their POV as well. No real character comparisons that I can think of, but the humor is also quite good, and it's not a mean spirited comedy the way some are. Everyone loves each other. (After the first season. We don't talk about the first season in this fandom.) I would even tentatively link Crazy Ex Girlfriend - West Covina isn't a small town at all, and in fact overidealized by the privileged character who moves there from NYC, but there's still the "big fish in a small pond" element. It's a dramedy, however, and gets incredibly dark later on. The character has a similar personality to Moira and David, except it's actually examined as a serious mental health issue, which I appreciate. Just realize that while CXG's humor is witty and fun, it can get incredibly intense.

I also note that both CXG and SC are about people growing together and bettering themselves (rather than only changing in subtle ways). I'd also recommend The Good Place for that - great humor, very much about people becoming better, and right in between CXG and SC as far as the comedy/drama quotient goes. The Good Place would probably be a lot darker if it weren't a comedy, but I would argue that SC also has some elements that get less funny the more you actually start to think about it. TGP does begin to dig more into the drama, however it never gets TOO dark.

Anyway, those are

Sense and Sensibility Discussion - Chapter 33-40

Hey again!

I really liked this part, and I think I'm actually starting to like the book now (after I'm halfway through :/ but still)

For once, I feel like Marianne had the appropriate reaction when she heard about the engagement and Elinor already knowing about it. Usually I feel like she’s too dramatic, but then if I was told the person my sister is in love with is engaged to someone else (and that my sister knew about it, I’d also freak out).

I love the Ferrars family slander. When the sisters and Ms Jennings went to their brothers house for dinner and by the end, the Middleton's and Ms Jennings were put off by them – especially after Marianne started crying and Sir Middleton actually moved!! It did make me feel smug.

I’m also shocked to see how many people were on Edward and Lucy’s side. I know that obviously not everyone cared about money and status when it came to marriage, but I didn’t expect them to be so much in Edward’s favour. Especially Ms Jennings who loves to play the match-maker, but ended up supporting Edward. I love that Colonel Brandon offered Edward the parsonage. But then John (Dashwood) did mention his shock, so maybe their kindness is out of the norm.

Which made me think - do you think this could be based on Jane Austen’s own life? I think I remember reading that she was courting with a man, but he ended up going to the city and becoming a lawyer (or something along the lines).

I still don’t really like the Steele sisters. The younger one – I can’t believe she let the engagement slip!!!! Does she not know how the relationships in the 1800s are supposed to work? Lucy, I ended up feeling sorry for by the end (although I do think she was a bit naΓ―ve about what the Ferrars thought of her).

I like Elinor and Marianne even more now. I feel like their true character has really been shown now. I love that after everything fell apart, they weren’t bitter against Lucy and Edward. I like Ms Jennings a lot more too, at first I thought she was just really nosy, not really caring about how people felt, but I think she's just someone who's very enthusiastic.

What did you think?

Sense and Sensibility Discussion - Chapters 1-8

I hope you’ve all had a good week!

I don’t have any strong feelings yet about the book, but I do like the characters.

I love Mrs Dashwood! She reminds me of the mum in Pride and Prejudice but more tolerable. Marianne is a fun character, it’s nice to see the difference between sisters. I feel pretty neutral towards Edward so far, he hasn’t really jumped out of the page yet for me.

Once Colonel Brandon was introduced, I knew that he was going to beβ€˜linked’ with Marianne, but I’m not sure how I feel about that, especially as Marianne is still a child (but then I guess it is the 1800s).

I hated Mrs John Dashwood, to the point that I actually found it difficult to get through the chapters she was in. I can’t believe how stupid John is just believing her?? Can he be that dense that he can’t see that his wife just doesn’t want to help them?

I like the Middleton’s. I feel like Lady Middleton had the potential to be an interesting character, so I’m looking forward to see where her character goes. I don’t know whether Sir John’s intentions are pure, but I guess time will tell (or maybe I’m just a pessimist).

What are your thoughts?

Dream adaptation & dream cast?

One of the things I love about K-dramas is that they can take on basically ANY genre and make it fun. So that got me to thinking about Korean versions of other projects I'd love to see. And - of course - how I would cast them (if I ruled the universe).

So, I'm curious: (1) what adaptation would you love to see; (2) how would you make it suit the k-drama world; and (3) who would you cast for key roles?

I have two adaptations I’d love to see: Sense and Sensibility & Miss Congeniality

Sense and Sensibility: I think the k-drama world is IDEALLY suited for Austen adaptations. I know a P&P adaptation comes up a lot, but I think S&S would actually be a better fit.

  • Changes: I would create scenario where a rich chaebol dies and his son inherits everything (from his first wife) and his current wife & two daughters are kicked out of the house by the son and his wife. The two sisters grew up rich and now need to fend for themselves, find success in their careers, and find love. Not many other changes would need to be made. I'd make the sisters older (past college).
  • Dream Cast:
  1. Seo Yea-Ji as Elinor Dashwood: The sensible and reserved eldest daughter.
  2. IU as Marianne Dashwood: The romantic sister who can't help but fall in love with the wrong guy.
  3. Jung Hae-In as Edward Ferrars: Evil sister-in-law’s brother… falls in love with Elinor even though he already has a fiancΓ©.
  4. Lee Dong Wook as Colonel Brandon: I have no good reason other than I love him and, in real life, there is a 14 year age gap between him and IU… In the book, he falls in love with Marianne at first sight and the age gap is significant.
  5. Park Bo Gum as John Willoughby: A dashing figure who charms Marianne and shares her artistic and cultural sensibilities – ends up marrying someone else (a rich girl).

Miss Congeniality: It could be a lot of fun to see this as a k-drama, with an expanded scope (and more focus on romance and girl friendships!).

  • Changes: I’d set this in the k-pop industry… instead of the pageant world. Basically, an agent has to go undercover as a member of a girls’ group in training. Of course, I’d expand the romance with the other

I remember reading a "Sense and Sensibility"(Jane Austen) fic featuring a relationship between Elinor Dashwood and John Willoughby, but now I can't find it anywhere. I actually can't find ANY fics that features this ship! Was it just a fever dream or what's happening?(Description of the fic inside)

I must have read it quite a while ago - maybe sometimes between 5~10 years ago. From what I can remember, the fic was unfinished and long-ish. I have also no finished reading it at that time, I think I only read one or two chapters.

[Description of what I remember]

The story takes place quite some time after the events of the book, maybe 10 years or so. Marianne has married Colonel Brandon, like in the canon, but Elinor has not married Edward, because he actually married Lucy Steel. So Elinor has remainded alone and was by now considered a spinster. In this story she is spending some time with a rich relative - not sure if Mrs Jannings or someone else - as a guest. While there she meets Willoughby again. I think Willoughby has married the rich lady, like in the canon story, but his wife has died, so he was a widower. He is also not the proud man he used to be as a youth and seem to regret the grief he has caused the Dashwoods. While Elinor still is very wary of Willoughby, she is being civil to him, and I remember they have a few discussion that makes her change her mind about him. I also remeber them talking in a greenhouse?!

From the description of the story I remember it said something along the lines: "x years after the end of the canon story, Elinor, now a spinster, meets Willoughby again, but he is quite a different person than she remebers." Or something like that.

[End Description]

I can swear this story existed once! I couldn't possibly have just imagines it myself (I'm notva writer). But I can't find it anywhere, and to be honest I can't find ANY fics at all with this pairing.

Maybe someone can help me here?

P.S.And if you know of any other fics that features this Pairing, I would be glad to read them :)

Proud dad moment.

Keep in mind, my son is 4 years old, so everything is an original to him.

I had to work late into the evening yesterday, and he was just going to bed when I got home. I had left home for the office nearly 14 hours prior, had a long day, lots of meetings, traffic, etc.

When I walked through the door, I was exhausted, run down, and starving. My wife hugged me and asked how my day was, and I replied, "Done. It was a good day, but has got me exhausted. I just want to grab a bite and go to bed. I'm hungry."

From my son's bedroom, I hear him shout, "Hi Hungry! Nice to meet you!"

Not only did it make me laugh, but I completely forgot about how hungry and tired I was. I went to his bedroom, and we laughed together about it. It was exactly what I needed.
