A list of puns related to "Mainstream Rock Chart"
I know The Offspring have fans worldwide, so this isn't applicable to every chart, but I thought this was an interesting bit of trivia. Which songs do you think reached the top spot?
The YouTube channel 'Punk Rock MBA' had an interesting vid today about rock music in the mainstream. I know this is Popheads and I'm familiar with the type of things this sub talks about.... but the vid raised some good points.
-ROCK FANS ARE STUCK IN THE PAST. Rock festival headliners are bands like Slipknot, Metallica, Tool etc. All bands that formed in the 80's / 90's with members 50+ years old. No new bands are popular enough to be on that level. Promoters book these old bands because its what sells the most tickets. On the flip side, Rolling Loud has no old school acts on the bill. I'll admit I only really listen to rock/metal I grew up with from the 90's. I couldn't give a crap about new rock bands. I find new rappers, DJ's, and collabs much more interesting these days. Spotify Top 50 will confirm this because it has no rock in it. Ever.
-BANDS DON'T WANT TO BE ROCK STARS. It's a fine line between trying to be a rock star, and having some credibility with the metal/rock fan base. Look at the big acts from the 80 / 90s. Yes they had the songs, but they had the personalities to grab attention. Axl Rose, Gwen Stefani, Blink 182 guys etc...These days DJs and rappers are the ones that act like rock stars. Travis Scott is going off live with huge crowds, making babies with a Kardashian, and in the charts and tabloids pulling massive numbers online. He seems larger than life, and is basically a brand. Rock bands just don't want to be in mainstream culture anymore in that way. Once upon a time they did (eg Fred Durst)...but now it's not cool enough, and the subgenres of rock are full of gatekeepers and elitism. Pop and Hiphop seem much more open to including anything in this streaming era.
I don't really know what my point is. I like hip hop. I like pop. I like metal. I like this subreddit. Goodnight.
EDIT: A few comments are confusing 'current rock bands that are doing well with their audience' with 'being mainstream'. I know we are all music fans here on Popheads with strong opinions. But you'd be surprised how many people don't really care about music that much, and just listen to 'whatever is on the radio' or only know mega popular rock songs from the 80's and 90's. That's mainstream. Travis Scott has 3x the monthly listeners on Spotify as Metallica, one of the biggest rock bands of all time who are still popular with younger audiences and still playing to huge crowds. There's enough people out there for a mid tier touring rock band to exist and pl

It does NOT deserve to be that low

Itβs now #10 and has been the greatest gainer for the last two weeks. Could Ghost have another chart topper on their hands?
Back in the 90s and up until the late 2000s, R&B artists were on top. Usher, carey, Whitney, TLC, R Kelly, Destinyβs child, Jodeci etc.
But nowadays R&B isnβt as popular, specifically in white households. I donβt think the genre will ever lose its footings in black households. We have very recognizable names but they donβt do the numbers that their predecessors do on their best day. Even after pop music started to decline in popularity come 2015/2016 ish, hip hop had a resurgence but R&B never fully came back. Despite the lines between the two genre becoming even more blurry.
And lastly. What do you think can bring R&B back to its prominence? Perhaps time? Just like pop music made many comebacks and downfalls? We have some great artists like sza, summer Walker, Mariah the scientist, Chloe x Halle etc.
Rats has been hanging in the top 3 for a few weeks now, slowly moving up. Itβs now officially topped the chart and is Ghostβs second chart topper on this chart. The first was Square Hammer. Our boys are getting big in the states!
