Happy World Pangolin Day!
This rolly polly mammal with scales is also the world's most trafficked animal.
Louise (/u/Adelina84) worked with the Carnivore and Pangolin Conservation Program in Vietnam for eighteen months radio tracking rehabilitated Sunda Pangolins.
I (Jason) teach and research environmental and science communication. My dissertation is on childhood agency regarding climate change.
Together we recently collaborated on a children's book to teach children about this lesser known critter in an ecologically sound, but fun and playful way. We're donating 30% of profits from the sales to pangolin conservation.
Feel free to ask us anything! About pangolins, science communication, our favorite teas, whatever!
Edit: Louise is off to do pangolin things but told me she'll be checking in throughout the day.
Edit2: I am also off to have lunch and work on a few things, but will also be checking in throughout the day. It's been great so far!
Edit3: A lot of people are asking what they can do to help. In addition to our educational book linked above, I wanted to share the following non-profit orgs Louise recommended in a comment below. They perform pangolin rescue, conservation, and education: Save Vietnam's Wildlife and Tikki Hywood Trust.
Edit4: Louise asked me to add that she's flying back to the UK now (much of this AMA was from the airport!) but that she'll answer a few more questions when she lands.
Edit5: Thanks everyone for the questions! This was a lot of fun. We are happy to see such interest in pangolins and our work!
Iβve been wanting to do a write-up about this case for a while, but didnβt get around to it until now. No exaggeration β This is one of the most chilling disappearances I have ever researched, and Iβd be lying if I said it didnβt lead to a couple nights of sleeping with the lights on when I first read about it.
Since there are so many different locations involved, and actually seeing the area can help inform your thoughts about a case, I thought itβd be helpful to include an interactive map. You can see it here. And, like my other write-ups, Iβve included an album of old newspaper articles here.

Diane Louise Augat was a 40-year-old mother who lived on Chesapeake Bay Drive in Odessa, a small community about 25 miles north of Tampa, Florida. In her 20s and very early 30s, she was a meticulous housewife to a man named Frederic and and loving mother to her son and two daughters. She was a talented artist and loved camping, fishing, boating, and music.
When Diane was about 30 years old, she was diagnosed with bipolar disorder, a mental illness that causes patients to swing drastically between episodes of crushing depression and manic highs. She had a particularly severe case, which eventually led to her losing custody of the children in 1988, Frederic divorcing her in 1991, and her spiraling into drugs and alcohol. According to her mother, Mildred, Diane was constantly on and off her medication and was difficult to be around when she wasnβt taking it. βShe deeply needed institutionalized care,β Mildred would tell the Tampa Bay Times in 2000.
By April 1998, she was an alcoholic and had been involuntarily committed 32 times, most recently just a few weeks before her disappearance. After her release from the mental health facility, she went to stay with her sister, Deborah Cronin, in the town of Hudson, about 20 miles northwest of Odessa.
Deborah last saw her sister at 11:00AM on April 10, 1998, when Deborah headed out of the house for a doctorβs appointment. Diane was seen later that day at the Hay Loft pub on Little Road, approximately three miles from Deborahβs home, but left when the bartender cut her off because she was βwalking in circlesβ. At around 4:00PM on the 11th, a motorist saw Diane walking north on US 19 near New York Avenue.
Sometime between April 11 and 14, Diane was seen at the now-defunct Coral Sands Mote
... keep reading on reddit β‘With Mother's day just around the corner here in the good ole us of a I have been trying to decide what I should get Disease Louise for Mother's day. My DH and his mom, who lives with us, don't really celebrate any holidays so she doesn't want anything besides a nice meal together so I'm kind of on my own for how to handle DL. See, this is the first Mother's day that I am out of the FOG and see her for what she really is.
Holidays have always been a big deal to me. I love to make a fuss and would love to be one of those Christmas movie mom's that goes ridiculously big for everything and I'm southern so ya'll know it all needs to be over the top! Growing up we never had much money and my stepdad ignored Mother's day so I was kind of on my own trying to figure out what I should get for Disease Louise. If asked she would say that all she wanted was a clean house (preach!) but if that was all she was given she would become moody and irritable all day followed by WEEKS of guilt about how we are terrible children and we all must hate her to have done so little to celebrate her special day(gag).
So every year I would earn money and take my little brother's to pick out gifts and cards for her. I would then clean the whole house top to bottom and I would get up early on Mother's day to make her breakfast in bed, grabbing my brother's just after the food was done so we could all give it to her together. For dinner that night I would set up the table with the fancy tablecloth (read:only tablecloth we owned), set up candles and the fancy plates (read:actual dishes, not plastic), make spaghetti with homemade garlic bread, and shoo the boys off to eat in front of the tv so my mom and stepdad could have a quiet meal together.
I did this for years but as I got older DL wanted more and more elaborate displays of affection and nothing was ever good enough. Despite growing to despise doing all this for her I kept my mouth shut and kept my traditions up with the boys to make sure that she would have nothing to complain about where I was concerned.
The year that made me stop doing anything beyond a dollar tree card grabbed at the last minute was a doozy though. See, my oldest younger brother was away at college so it was just me and my younger two brothers going to be home for Mother's day. I was working full time and decided that since Disease Louise was having such a hard time coping with the loss of her golden child I would do something extra special for Moth

29.5 weeks and For the past 2 weeks it seems I will start to have Braxton Hicks that wonβt stop until I get off my feet. I know Iβm drinking enough water, so itβs not that. It will usually start up when Iβm doing chores and goes away as soon as I lie down. My doctor said it was only concerning if they donβt stop after laying down and drinking water and if I have 6 in an hour to go to the hospital. Iβm just annoyed that I have to stop being productive to lay down every day. Wondering if anyone else is having the same thing?
Patrol will open most the stuff Monday as they wonβt be able to keep up. Heads up.
Her name is Hannah Louise Poston. I just subscribed. Iβve been bingeing her videos and I feel SO INSPIRED that I had to share her channel here. She is everything we need in a beauty YouTuber in 2019!
In 2018 she did a one year no buy and documented it on her channel. This year she is focused on a beauty budget of a specific monthly amount to be spent on makeup, skincare, clothing, & home goods (she has certain rules for this which she detailed in her beauty budget video on Jan 1, 2019). She is also going to document where the money she spends goes and explore ethical consumerism. Her main goal this year is the budget though (just how last year her main goal was the no buy).
I know a lot of us are struggling against the 21 day sale rn so here is her video anti hauling the whole thing (yes there are sassy moments but unlike many anti hauls there is a great deal of insightful as well):
https://youtu.be/IiXHQHkpVaE
There are many insightful parts to this video but one of the best parts was her explaining what she plans to do about the day of the sale her favorite mascara is half off. I wonβt spoil it for you but itβs pretty unexpected!
Just watching her videos inspires me soooo much!! I wish I had discovered her channel sooner! I hope you enjoy & find inspiration in her videos as well!
