A list of puns related to "Literary Cat Names"
I read this book in elementary or middle school, likely '94 - '98. I would guess I got it from the school library, but I can't say for sure.
As I said in the title, the sister had a bunch of cats named Garfield and Cheshire and such, and it turns out she was going into the books and bring the cats back out with her. I think the protagonist eventually uses the bookmark to go into his own books, but I honestly don't remember much beyond the cats thing.
Hello! Iβm launching a literary publication at my college next semester which will include articles about the arts (literature, fine art, film, philosophy, media, photography, poetry) and am looking for an interesting/punchy name. Would greatly appreciate any suggestions and will offer payment (PayPal/Venmo) if I end up choosing it!
So I'm doing a writing thingy about a library, what is the name of the architecture if you have a library with multiple floors (say like 9), what is the structure called where you have a big hole piercing down the middle through multiple floors, but you have a railing around the outside that allows you to look over it and see all the other floors?
I'm talking about something like this https://www.google.com/search?q=library+of+congress&rlz=1C1ZKTG_enUS920US920&biw=1920&bih=937&tbm=isch&sxsrf=AOaemvLvCu8U1JW1lF3jn4sc59YKDutpsw:1638030046735&source=lnms&sa=X&ved=2ahUKEwi7ncS4-bj0AhU_IDQIHVGbAP4Q_AUoA3oECAEQBQ#imgrc=utxxCZX7E5pMtM
Edit: I looked at the fucking blueprints of the library of congress and it still doesn't tell me the name of the structurehttps://www.loc.gov/visit/maps-and-floor-plans/thomas-jefferson-building/first-floor/
Edit 2: turns out it is mezzanine
I'm currently renaming all my cats to have cat puns of famous literary authors. So far I have Nathaniel Pawthorne, Truman Catpote, Louisa May Alcatt, and Edgar Allen Paw. Help me think of some more.
The way the literary device works is that you take an object in a sentence and replace it with two nouns to make it more expressive, poetic, or comedic. "Sword" becomes "battle-flasher". "Bear" becomes "bee-hunter". "Bus" becomes "diesel-twinkie".
OneTwoThree.
The Un-Deux-Trois cat sank.
When you have a simile of two words with the same root.
Examples:
He runs like a runner.
He writes like a writer.
He smokes like a smoker.
etc.
Hi!
Iβm picking up my new Standard Poodle puppy at the end of this month and Iβm trying to get a little list of names put together.
What Iβm looking for: Girl names that have to do with books or music (preferably pianos). Iβm going to use this puppy as a reading assistance therapy dog so Iβd love it if her name was a famous authors name or a characterβs name! I really like mangas, fantasy novels, short stories, poetry, mythology (all types like Greek/Roman/Chinese/Celtic/Indonesian/Phillipino/Native American, etc) and thrillers. Some of my favorite authors are Agatha Christie, Neil Gaiman and Colson Whitehead. Iβm also looking to put together some names that have to do with music/pianos since her litter was comprised of equal number of black and white puppies so they looked like piano keys and, subsequently, her breeder will be giving the puppies a registered name that has to do with pianos. Iβd like to keep her name to 3 syllables or less :). I like names that are a bit more edgy and uncommon.
Names I like: Agatha (Agatha Christie) Lettie (main character from my favorite Gaiman novel and a character in Lovecraft Country) Lyra (main character from The Golden Compass) Octavia (Octavia Butler) Tonks (character from Harry Potter)
Names I donβt like: Nothing common like Bella I prefer unique names,so, for example, I donβt really like the name Emily even though I love Emily Dickinson poetry Canβt be hard to spell/pronounce. I live in the southern USA :) Iβd like to avoid names where I probably wouldnβt run into a person with that name
I think thatβs all, TIA!!!
My partner and I are getting a foster dog this Saturday (foster to adopt). We don't know what kind of dog it will be until we get there, but obviously I am already thinking about names as none of the animals have any at the moment.
All of my pets have had literary names my whole life. My parents have a dog named Pippin (LOTR) and my partner and I have a dog named Arya (we call her Ari, mostly).
Any ideas for literary names, either male or female? Any genre is really acceptable, although I mostly read Sci Fi and Fantasy. Comic book names also acceptable.
The only caveat is that we are avoiding any more Game of Thrones names...for obvious reasons to anyone who watched the show.
Edit: I got a thousand notifications, how and why is not clear, but thank you so much to everybody who responded!!!
What are the long dashes, (e.g. "----shire" or "17__") in novels called? I know the reason why these are used and read somewhere that this style has a specific name such as ".... dash" but can't remember the name exactly.
Update: remembered the exact name. It's called Dostoevsky dash.
female
after 18 long years of begging i now have a cat!! this is her.
my family already has two dogs, riceball (bichon) and pancake (corgi) so weβd ideally like a food name for her.
so far we have: sugar, milkshake/milk, toast and egg. none really feel βrightβ Iβd appreciate some suggestions.
ETA: we ended up choosing pear!! itβs ridiculously cute and we simply canβt get over it :) ricecake and soju were also our favourites. thank you all so much for this!!
There's got to be a pretentious term for it that's not simply "lustful" or "horny".
Her and her sister are a bonded pair who raised their kittens together.
More specifically, I asked for them to name a mother tabby Dolly Purrton who "exemplifies the qualities of Dolly Parton". I asked for a mother tabby because they're the hardest to adopt here and usually mother cats aren't adopted as easily. They agreed and I get the impression that they would have done it for free.
Even if they said no, I would have donated anyway.
Although it was impulsive, I chose Dolly Purrton over other names on my list (which I may post when I organise it) for a few reasons:
To help her stand out. Usually kittens get adopted before their mother.
Puns are generally inoffensive
Dolly Parton isn't controversial and is amazing. Compared to some of the other names on my list (which I'd never use) like Winston Purrchill, Ivan TheCat (Ivan Milat, famous Australian serial killer) or Kitler.
Dolly Purrton can be shortened to just Dolly, making it more acceptable. In fact most posts just call her Dolly.
Just Cats Tasmania, Australia.
It reads
"Dolly arrived with her Sister Francesca who where both heavily pregnant, these ladies raised their babies together and have a very special bond so we plan to adopt them together with an equally special adoption rate Let us tell you about Dolly here though.....
There's no working 9-5 for miss Dolly. She is the queen of relaxation. If you're after a cat that just loves to sit and snuggle with you and enjoy your company shes purrfect, she will start purring the minute she sees you coming. Not only did she help Francesca through her labour she also co-parented the kittens like the super mum she is. it would be so special to send Dolly go to a home alongside Francesca. She is such a special girl. Great with kids and other cats. She was also curious of her foster family's dog and unfazed by his barking but wouldn't let him get too close to her whilst in care with her kittens - understandably so!
Profile for her sister Francesca
It reads
"Francesca arrived at the Shelter with her sister Dolly - both heavily pregnant - these girls have done everything together so they want to be adopted together too - lets help them stay together.....
Francesca is a young lady of just 1

Bonus points if itβs the title character but not required, additional bonus points if itβs the title character of a childrenβs book specifically. Can also be an author name for the right name but Iβd ultimately prefer the character name. Our last name is one syllable, starts with a P. Iβm not concerned about popularity in either direction. Unfortunately Madeline and Amelia are off of the table as my nieces have these names.
Some of the names Iβve been considering in this vein:
Eloise (Eloise at the Plaza), Josephine (Little Women), and Matilda (Matilda)
Oliver (Oliver Twist), Christopher (Winnie the Pooh), and Maxwell (Where the Wild Things Are)
My list is just too short, please help me expand it!
Hej! I would like to work on a third language during all my covid-induced free time, and I've been dabbling with various languages on Duolingo, checking out the Swedish sounds and some basic words. I like it a lot, it flows really well and the words sound nice to me. However, I'm not really in a financial position to travel abroad and so my language learning is for the mental exercise and reading. Before I settle on Swedish and buy learning materials, can anyone list out some classic, canonical books in Swedish? You know, Spain has Cervantes, France has Victor Hugo, the UK has Shakespeare. What's that work for Sweden? I want to see what I would be working towards before committing. (My other possibility is German, to read some Goethe in the original). Tack!
Hello! I'm in the brainstorming stage of looking for a name for our baby boy, due in early 2021. I've got a few names in mind, but nothing that I'm 100% on board with yet, especially because they tend to be rather popular right now and I'm not crazy about that... but I also don't know that it would be a deal breaker either. I tend to like fairly traditional names, bonus points if they have a literary twist to them!
I also care a lot about how a name sounds... both the acoustics of the name and the overall rhythm of the name. I don't like names that feel too overwrought and fussy (like... trying avoid accidentally naming our baby like an Earl on Downton Abbey). The problem is some of the names I like DO sound like an an Earl on Downton Abbey. So, I need help thinking of more!
A couple other rules... my husband doesn't like names that are nicknames on their own. For example, Theo is a no-go, but we could do Theodore. We're also not religious, and don't want to accidentally use a name that is particularly indicative of any religion. We are in the United States, and our family backgrounds are mostly English, Scottish, Welsh, German, with a bit of Italian thrown in.
My last name is two syllables, starts with an S, and sounds a lot like Sperling.
Also, we have a bit of a tradition with using a older family surnames as a middle name. My great grandmother's surname was Halfpenny, which I think is a tremendously cool name... but maybe too quirky for a middle name. Maybe just quirky enough?
Again, thanks for help with brainstorming and any thoughts on the names on the list. Perhaps one of them will be the winner? Or maybe I'll find something new with your help. THANKS!
Here are some names I like:
Ezra: I've always loved this name... inspired by Ezra Pound, but he was a huge anti-semite, so now I feel like the name is a bit problematic. But I still like the name a lot! Not sure what to do with this one.
Wyatt: I love this name, but it's a bit trendy. However, it reminds me of my dad who passed away, so it's high on my list.
Cooper: I'm a big Twin Peaks fan, and I really like this name... but it also sounds a bit... trendy?
Julian: Too pretentious? I'm not sure?
Oliver James: We have a whole slew of Oliver James (and James Olivers) in my family history, but Oliver is SO popular.
Elliot: Another literary name (T.S. Eliot) that I like a good bit!
Sebastian: I love this name but it seems... so dramatic!
Everett: I like this, but my husband
