This is one of the funniest moments that i have encountered on this show so far in my first viewing.
These two characters share some similarities, even with their personalities (and how they look too!). Theodore Twombly like Leonard are both highly intelligent, very good at their jobs but the two share a difference, passion. Theodore is what Leonard could be if he were passionate about his job and made real strides in the scientific community (Only Sheldon points out to Leonard that what he does as a scientist is insignificant while the other guys keep to themselves but share the same opinion). The two characters might not be ambitious by any means but at least Twombly does his work to the best of his ability while Leonard does the bare minimum without caring much for the opinion of others.
Now in the perspective of romance, and I will avoid spoilers here for those who have not seen the movie. What happens to Theodore is what Leonard runs away from each time a very specific issue is brought up. And Theodore comes into the situation where he has no choice but to confront it. However, what happens is not as bad as Leonard makes it out to be, and there's another thing Leonard lacks of, a close friend. Re-watching the show I don't think Leonard has someone whom he can talk about his insecurities with (aside Penny, he talks to Sheldon but we all know Sheldon is not the real type of person to give advice on these matters) Sheldon sometimes shares his insecurities with Penny and really helps him even if a little. I bring this up because the close friend character in the movie was very important for Theodore's development. For those who have not watched the film I urge you to, it's a great movie.

I'm watching The Staircase Implmentation again and everytime I watch this eoisode it makes me wonder how old Leonard Hofstadter is compared to Penny? The episode is suppose to be about the moment Leonard met Sheldon and it suppose to take place 7 years ago. He just started at the university as a Physicist? So that makes him 27? 30? We also see in the same eoisode that Penny was in high school at the same time. So she's 10? 12? Years younger? Does that sound right or am I missing something?
