Last night I was sworn in at the November 22nd PWD trustee meeting. All meetings can be watched LIVE! or on demand at https://townhallstreams.com/towns/pmwd I will summarize what I feel were some takeaways that the public should pay attention to.
Joe Piccone from the Teamsters came in to say hi and give thanks to PWD for a great job handling the pandemic and keeping employees safe. He gave very high praise to the management of PWD. He also noted that negotiations are coming up and invited any board member to come to negotiations. That is certainly something I intend to attend.
This meeting was interesting because not only was it my first meeting as a Trustee but the maine agenda purpose was for the trustees to vote to enact the 2022 budget that General Manager Lewis and her team have drafted with the boards guidance since April 2021.
I have read nearly every page of the over 400 page budget and I can report that it is the most professional report I have ever encountered. They literally won a GFOA distinguished budget presentation award for how great their budget is. All of the adoptions of the proposed budgets passed unanimously. Which is unsurprising because if there was going to be a dispute it would have come up WAY earlier in the year. I got to raise my hand a lot.
There will be a public hearing in December concerning the 3% water rate adjustment coming up in (May).
One of the items on the agenda is more important than the others!
Gorham is losing their trustee representative and there will be a SPECIAL ELECTION in Gorham to replace Mr. Robert Burns. He's taken a job that conflicts with his duties on the board and had to resign. The board has voted to notify Gorham that they shall hold a special election for PWD trustee as soon as possible. The EARLIEST they COULD would be February but it is up to their discretion as to when the election will be held.
If you or someone you know lives in Gorham and would be interested in joining the Board of Trustees for Portland Water District you should keep your eyes peeled for notification of a special election. I will update Reddit when I have more information.
Other than that it was a pretty cut and dry meeting. You can watch the whole thing if you'd like to. It's about an hour.
