Leif Erickson Puns

Do you guys find that Nike Run Club is accurate in the forest? According to the Leif Erickson mile markers, I ran 10 miles, but on the app it says I only ran 8.8, and the in-app narrator was clearly not lining up with the mile markers throughout the run. Is the app wrong or are the mile markers wrong?

Since my other post asking if anyone was interested in a weekly group ride received so much positive feedback, and the weather actually looks great this weekend, let’s get this thing started!

Based on feedback, we will organize a different route each week, focusing on gravel and rural areas to help get us out of the city. If you have a route to suggest, please post it here (RideWithGPS link would be great). Ideally, your suggested route starts/ends near a reliable source of coffee, pastries, and/or beer. We will try to keep variety from week to week, so don’t be afraid to suggest something different or make a request.

This will be an inclusive and social group ride that is non competitive (which isn’t mutually exclusive with getting a good workout!). Everyone is welcome, but please be sure to check out the route and ask questions if you’re not sure if this is right for you. The only rules are that you be cool and ride your bike.

COVID protocol: please follow all COVID social distancing and mask guidelines while riding and while stopped. For example, wear a mask while riding in close proximity, such as while drafting close behind someone, or simply leave some extra space. When riding as a group past pedestrians or other cyclists, please pull on a mask as a courtesy if for nothing else.

A few people were interested in helping to organize the weekly rides with me. I’d certainly appreciate it! Let’s talk about it during the first ride.

3/28/21 r/CyclePDX Group Ride

For our first ride, we’ll hit one of the most accessible gravel rides in Portland: Leif Erickson Drive in Forest Park, returning on Skyline. This route is nice because it’s easy to turn back at the end of Leif Erickson if you didn’t get muddy enough the first time through or if you don’t feel like climbing up to Skyline. Leif Erickson is a wide fire road with lots of room for distancing, but it is usually busy with pedestrians and other cyclists, so be ready to wear a mask or pull up a head buff when it gets crowded.

Does anyone know if the mile markers on Leif Erickson Drive are fairly accurate? I do a long run there once a week (training for a half marathon in the summer). Just don’t want to get burned when race day comes!

I ask because often my GPS watch (Garmin) is quite off. I don’t trust the GPS - sometimes it’s higher, sometimes it’s lower, sometimes it’s right in line with the mile markers. But it does make me wonder about the markers themselves.

These are all my history teachers. I want to ask people who might know more than they do. Sorry if this is too basic, I am just wondering. I heard so many theories and wanna know the truth.

Leif Erickson was arguably the first Europe to set foot on the North America and actually established a settlement (Vinland). If we are going to celebrate a European explorer it should be Leif Erickson instead of Christopher Columbus. In all of his exploration Columbus only landed in the Caribbean and the coasts of Central and South America.

I would assume that the discovery of a place as strange to them as Newfoundland would spread far and wide.

What do you think the little known Viking lied Erickson actually found when he talked about “Vinland” or do you think he made it all up?

What might motivate this change, and how would it shape America's future? and What would it mean for the other Norse colonies of Iceland and Greenland?

There is this traditional story that is told in Ireland, and it revolves around a guy named St. Brendan. The story is about how Brendan and a couple other of his monk friends got on a boat after the were told by god to discover “the land of paradise”. However the intriguing part is that the recounts of Brendan’s journey establish that he passed an island of blacksmiths who tossed slag into the sea which could be used to describe Iceland. He also passed through crystal pillars which could be a description for icebergs in the northern Atlantic. When Brendan and his cohort finally reach the land of paradise they encounter people who have darker skin. The journey is also possible as some guy in the 70’s replicated the journey with a traditional Irish vessel. In all likelihood Brendan reached the Americas before Leif Erickson.
