>Elkins, originally from Virginia, traveled to Florida to visit relatives in early 1981. On Valentine's Day, departed from her family's residence in Miami, Florida, on February 14, 1981, stating she would be visiting her boyfriend, whom she did not identify by name. She was last seen walking from the home with a brown suitcase, which has yet to be recovered. The reason for her departure was allegedly after a disagreement with one of her family members. She possibly spent time in the city of Naples before arriving in Miami. Before the connection was made between her and the Jane Doe, investigators did announce that there was a possibility she had been murdered.

On July 16th, 2012, Deputy Roger Gates of Lee County, Va, Sheriffβs office stopped at a public park, Leeman Field near the town of Pennington Gap to use the restroom and left Chase, a two-year-old police dog, in the car. When he returned, Chase was no longer in the vehicle and had vanished from the surrounding area.
According to the Deputy, Chase was well-known and well-liked during his time at the sheriffβs office and many people had petted him. He claimed there was βno doubtβ that Chase been deliberately removed from the car. A search commenced right away and multiple local businesses and organizations donated raised several thousand dollars in reward money for Chaseβs safe return.
The Sheriffβs office hoped for the best. Eventually, they received a tip that a dogβs body was next to a dumpster three miles away from the park. However; when the site was searched, the dogβs body was not found. Reports conflict as to when this tip was received. It was either two or three days after chase went missing.
Chaseβs body was found about two miles from the park in a drainage culvert off of a state road. By this time, decomposition had set in and police were unable to determine the cause of death. Chase was sent to the Virginia Tech Veterinary School for an autopsy. The autopsy revealed that Chase had been shot to death. A memorial service was held for Chase at a local high school auditorium.
Again, reports conflict. One article says that Chase was found βseveral days afterβ the tip came in βseveral days after he went missing. The Officer Down Memorial Page says Chase was recovered two days after he went missing.
There is very little information readily accessible about Chaseβs killing, consisting of a few local news articles and remembrance pages. The police never released any additional info about what gun was used, or if anyone was ever suspected or charged. The case, it appears, is cold.
A few questions I have:
First of all, why would somebody do this? It doesnβt make sense that somebody would open up a police car and remove a highly trained dog capable of tackling a grown man in broad daylight. Not everyone is a fan of the police, but most people like dogs and donβt go around killing them.
Second of all, was the dog that was seen by the dumpster even the same animal? Thereβs no description given. Who moved the body? Itβs entirely possible that it was a wild animal such as a bear, but if that were the case, evidence such as teeth marks would have
