I first met Macy at preschool. We were both timid, scrawny toddlers afraid of our new environment. The teachers, brightly colored walls, the other kids - it was all too much. I didn’t know her name back then, and I would only learn it months later, but her appearance alone seared itself in my memory for years to come.

Macy had short, white hair that looked like it hadn’t seen a brush in a lifetime. Her beady eyes were always bloodshot from allergies and her nose was long and thin, twitchy at times. Dark freckles adorned her lower face, looking sort of like whiskers if you squinted hard enough. I mean, it’s quite poor taste to call a child ugly, I know, so I will use the word plain instead. Her features, though remarkable, were hardly appealing.

I remember when I first witnessed it. We were seated at a pink table in the corner, watching the other kids wreak havoc on the playroom. I was just working out what to say when I saw her grab a glue stick from her pencil case. I thought she was going to get some colored paper too, but she didn’t. Instead, Macy opened the glue stick and began nibbling on the rim, nervous eyes darting around the room.

“What are you doing?” I asked, still at the age where prying was the norm.

Macy froze mid-lick, turning to look at me with two fearful eyes. She didn’t reply, but closed the glue stick and put it back inside her pencil case. She got up and went over to the opposite end of the room where she sat down in a lonely corner, facing the wall. She muttered something under her breath, shook her head, then clasped a hand over her mouth.

We didn’t cross paths again until high school.

My best friend Laura and I had a fight over some screamo band where the lead singer looked like a girl. Laura called me a lesbian for having a crush, which pissed me the hell off. At that very hormonal time, it seemed like my best friend had betrayed me, so I turned away from her and our entire group of friends.

I started sitting by myself during lunchtime. Our school had a strict no-gadgets policy, so I couldn’t listen to my music, but I would often drum my fingers on the lunch table, trying to reproduce such timeless classics as Ride the Wings of Pestilence and It Was Written in Blood.

One day there were no free tables to live my best emo life, so I was forced to make the next best statement by sitting with the social pariah that was Glue Sticks Macy. At first, I just sat there quietly sulking into my mashed potatoes, sighing as I snuck glanc

Hey r/TheAmazingRace!

Another season down, another review here! I’m pleased to say I have finished Season 13 in my chronological watch of all the seasons!

This is a season that I’ve ended feeling pretty content. It didn’t necessarily stand out for me, but it had a decent cast, and many fun/entertaining moments throughout the season. I’m just not a huge fan of the Final 3, and find quite a few of the cast (mainly early boots) to be very forgettable.

I also feel the Season 9-ish feel of having two teams always dominating the Top 2 (except for one leg) doesn’t work here quite as well, with the teams being significantly less interesting/entertaining than BJ/Tyler and the Frat Boys.

But nevertheless, still got a massive amount to talk about here, so lets get into the details

Disclaimer: I've only seen Seasons 1-13 and Season 30 - so please refrain from spoiling any future seasons! I'm planning on only browsing my posts in the sub, and nothing else, to avoid spoilers! Also, this is all my opinion! You are of course allowed to disagree, but lets keep it civil :)

Thoughts on the cast

My first reaction on the cast this season was that they seemed pretty solid, and a bit wacky. I also noticed right of the bat that we got more atypical M/M teams. I’m glad to say that most of this continued to check out in the long run, and the cast pretty much delivered in terms of goofiness/wackyness. In saying this though, I did find that quite a few of them came across as very bland or forgettable, which is always a shame.

Nick and Starr

One of the two ‘titans’ of the season imo, Nick and Starr were consistently strong performers throughout the season. Despite a shaky start, they soon sorted out their racing around the 5th leg and began to record a huge number of 1st place finishes before winning out the season.

In terms of deserving the win, these two really earned it this season. They were consistently strong performers, both in challenges and general racing, and also had that hint of strategy that adds a level of complexity to teams. I really enjoyed the almost villainous role they fell into, especially in the first half of the season, and I think Nick in particular was really entertaining as an almost Terminator like villain.

The relationship between the two was really sweet, and they had quite a few fun moments that I want to touch on further below, but unfortunately I do think they are a little forgettable and/or boring. Whilst they were a constant

I continue to be perplexed by this friendship with the Siesta Key kids. I can't tell who is riding on whose coattails. It looks like Kelsey and Max are hanging out with their parents. The story of them making pizza is so cringey and awkward and Laura's personality is literally that of a sheltered, awkward, socially inept 12 year old. That's stupid little dance with the pizza stone. And filming the whole time. I am genuinely befuddled.

Forty-eight (48!!) whole-ass scents. I'm a slut for Poesie. I'm going to try to be hella succinct, okay? Here we go.

All Mirth, No Matter - notes: apricot blossom, white chocolate, butterscotch, honeysuckle, magnolia,  amber, and a fillip of juicy blood orange: Um? I can't even begin to describe this. Weird. Doesn't work for me at all. Opaque plastic and salt? Play-Dough but not quite? No florals or gourmands to be found. Just weirdness.

Athena - notes: sun-baked Mediterranean herbs and earth, a rich and resinous vanilla spiked with a complex blend of incense and spice, and exquisite grey musk: YES. Ugh, sweet, herbal, slightly spicy, a little musky. Hella goddess-like. The Athena in the Percy Jackson & the Olympians series would ABSOLUTELY smell like this.

Autumn Shadows - notes: spiced peach butter spread on sweet brown bread, a vase of chrysanthemums in the center of a mahogany table, and a lingering hint of amber perfume: Really pretty, but maybe it a little too floral? Poesie's mahogany note is ridiculously amazing, though.

Black Cat Cuddles - notes: sweet coconut milk spiked with clove, cinnamon, and black pepper, incense-dusted fur, flecks of vanilla bean, and a distant pine forest: I love this, sweet and musky and slightly spicy. Cuddly and soft. It's so cozy. If it had a touch more longevity on me, I would have full-sized the fuck out of this.

Book of Words - notes: sweet orange, lemon, lime, sugared milk, skin musk, benzoin, muguet, oud: Limes and assorted citrus and just a tiny dash of cream? It's not awful, but since I'm not a citrus fan to begin with, I think I'll pass, thanks.

Cauldron of Morning - notes: powdery marshmallows laced with licorice, juicy plum and blood orange, gardenia, green rose, rich mahogany: Green rose, mahogany, and an unexpected handful of dirt. I don't know what I assumed a cauldron of morning would be, but this is not it, unless your cauldron is actually a freshly potted rose bush on a mahogany table.

Charm of Making - notes: amber honey in the comb, antique pages bound in leather, bunches of lavender smoked over a wood fire, and jars of dried chamomile, juniper, and clary sage: Herbal and not sweet, like a kitchen witch's cottage. Very atmospheric.

Cinders - notes: the smoky scent of burnt firewood: Recently put-out firewood. Realistic, not at all perfumey. Smells like your house might be burning down. Go check on your oven.
