(Iβm willing to rent or pay for it)
I had watched Kids many years ago but I honestly wasn't really paying propper attention at the time. This week I read the script and today I watched it again. I found it to be an incredible film. The depiction of youth in such a real and gritty way is something that you don't come across that often.
However I was surprised to see much negative feedback on it. On Rotten Tomatoes it has a 46% and the general critics consensus is that "KidsΒ isn't afraid to test viewers' limits, but the point of its nearly non-stop provocation is likely to be lost in all the repellent characters and unpleasant imagery". The Washington Post's review called it, βvirtually child pornography disguised as a cautionary documentaryβ.
I understand the shock of it, but I believe they are missing out on some of the underlying topics in the film, which are actually quite deep, like the feeling of being lost in teenage years and the consequences of not having safe sex. I didn't think the sex scenes were even that explicit or abundant, and it wasn't the main focus of my attention. The reactions remind me of Gaspar NoΓ©'s Love, which has a deeper story at play yet many can't see past the fact that it contains real explicit sex scenes.
It seems to be a very "love or hate" film. It was certainly shocking when it came out, but I'm quite sure it has the same impact for many viewers today. Overall I think it's a fantastic film, both narratively and visually. And the fact that it was written by Harmony Korine at 19, was Larry Clark's first time directing, and all the cast were completely amateur makes it even more fascinating to me.
What are your opinions? Also any recommendations of similar films are appreciated, whether in topics or for that visual dirty gritty style.
Here is a really interesting read about Kids
Passing Through is a L.A. Rebellion Movement film that has never had a commercial release outside of a few select screenings at UCLA. At some point it was transposed and uploaded to archive.org but now it doesn't seem like it's anywhere to be found.
Does anybody have any copies or ideas of where to look for this rare film?
I just wanted to start a discussion on how many people would be interested in seeing some of Clark's or Korine's films released by a boutique.
I'm not sure if the movies are a bit too polarizing to be released in this kind of market but I would love to see a Kids and Gummo blu-ray release.
Or even better a Korine or Clark boxset
Iβve been trying to watch this movie for a while, but every website I go on to watch, it says itβs unavailable. Iβm willing to pay to rent this movie but i canβt find it anywhere! Can someone help me out?
