For the past decade, goalkeeper and filmmaker Hannes Þór Halldórsson has been the number one goalkeeper for Iceland and retired this fall as the most capped Icelandic goalkeeper to date, after 77 caps. Hannes only made his debut with the national team in 2011, when he was already 27 years old, and immediately ended the goalkeeper crisis Iceland’s national team had been in following Árni Gautur Arason’s retirement, that had mostly been filled by the veteran Gunnleifur Gunnleifsson (36 years old at the time of Hannes’ debut).
The task to replace Hannes is big, but the problems are of a more luxurious nature than you’d think. Traditionally, a very good Icelandic goalkeeper was good enough to play in a top Scandinavian league. I can’t really name an Icelandic goalkeeper that has surpassed that level. It’s thus very good news that 4 Icelandic goalkeepers born in 2000 or 2001 made their top-flight Scandinavian debut this fall. This means that in 2021, way more Icelandic goalkeepers have played top-flight Scandinavian football than ever before, and these are young keepers. It’s very likely that at least one of them will become even better, and perhaps the best Icelandic goalkeeper of all time – unless they all stagnate at this level, which is possible. You’ll forgive Icelanders for feeling spoiled for talent at the minute though – relatively, we are.
For a short background on Icelandic keepers, I’ll quickly go chronologically through Icelandic keepers that have more than 15 caps to their name (hoping I forgot no one). Feel free to skip this if you want, I’m mostly just listing caps and clubs they played for.
We’ll start with ÍA and Valur player Helgi Daníelsson, who received 25 caps from 1953-1965. Nothing to say about him really.
Then we have Valur player Sigurður Dagsson who received 18 caps from 1966-1977. Handball fans will know his son Dagur Sigurðsson.
Then we have Þorsteinn Bjarnason with 28 caps from 1978-1986. Mostly played with Keflavík in Iceland. Had a brief spell in Belgium with La Louvière in 1978-1979, may have been the first Icelandic goalkeeper to play abroad (though I’m not sure if he ever featured or not). Also played 6 games for the basketball national team.
Then is ÍA, Brann and Valur player Bjarni Sigurðsson with 41 caps from 1980-1991. Here we see the first example of a top-flght Scandinavian team in Brann.
Then we have Fram, Breiðablik, ÍBV, Þór and B1909 player Friðrik Friðriksson who managed 26 caps from 1982-1995. B1909 is a

I don't want to step on anybody's toes here, but the amount of non-dad jokes here in this subreddit really annoys me. First of all, dad jokes CAN be NSFW, it clearly says so in the sub rules. Secondly, it doesn't automatically make it a dad joke if it's from a conversation between you and your child. Most importantly, the jokes that your CHILDREN tell YOU are not dad jokes. The point of a dad joke is that it's so cheesy only a dad who's trying to be funny would make such a joke. That's it. They are stupid plays on words, lame puns and so on. There has to be a clever pun or wordplay for it to be considered a dad joke.
Again, to all the fellow dads, I apologise if I'm sounding too harsh. But I just needed to get it off my chest.
Do your worst!
I'm surprised it hasn't decade.
For context I'm a Refuse Driver (Garbage man) & today I was on food waste. After I'd tipped I was checking the wagon for any defects when I spotted a lone pea balanced on the lifts.
I said "hey look, an escaPEA"
No one near me but it didn't half make me laugh for a good hour or so!
Edit: I can't believe how much this has blown up. Thank you everyone I've had a blast reading through the replies 😂
It really does, I swear!
