Yes, the one where Milla Jovovich plays a one-woman vampire army determined to take out the government within the aftermath of a pandemic that turned people into vampires deserves a second chance. People at the time wrote it off for being dull, eye-gouging, and ridiculous. I can understand a fair amount of people writing it off under those terms, but I’m rather surprised that’s what almost everyone thinks about it. I thought it was a barrel of fun--genuinely enjoyable, not so-bad-it’s-good, and one of the more impressive action flicks I’ve seen given its big-budgeted indie production.
True, the look of the movie is very artificial and the backgrounds are very low-poly in design, but the movie’s suspension of disbelief is so effective that the look of the film becomes charming and uniquely beautiful in its own way (not unlike, say, Speed Racer two years later). The way scenes are composed of boldly defined colours and fast-paced movement, coupled with director Kurt Wimmer’s signature approach to martial arts (he calls it Gun Kata, also seen in Equilibrium) makes for a pretty intoxicating blend of East-Asian choreography (it definitely feels broader than The Matrix despite what people suggest) and flashy but fully committed MTV pacing and visuals. The action sequences may be over-the-top, but given that this film exists in its own special universe, seeing elaborate stunts like the motorcycle chase or the climactic flaming katana showdown (which Wimmer reportedly wanted to use in Equilibrium but couldn’t due to budget constraints) make for a good time.
No, it’s not perfect--but don’t blame Wimmer. It really seemed that the film was meant to be his magnum opus given the intense level of care that went into it (the IMDb trivia page is especially worth reading), but Sony apparently didn’t like the rest of the film and had about a quarter of it excised into something that was...I’ll say passably comprehensible (the only real nag in understanding the narrative comes in the end of the second act, to be honest, which is just jarring). The unrated version restores about five minutes of that footage (explaining the vampire aspects of the film) but given what else was left out from the film (and the fact that the movie went out with unfinished visuals, which isn’t really nagging aside from the obvious blue/green screen when Violet is about to drive her motorcycle into a heli
