I just spoke to Governor Beshear's office and a very nice woman answered the phone and transferred me to someone else to whom I went over the details of the RRF Small Business Package being worked on.

• The episode is titled “Kobayashi Maru” after the test of the same name Starfleet cadets are required to take. First mentioned in “The Wrath of Khan”, it is a ”no win scenario.” James Kirk was the first and, at the time, only person to beat it, having reprogrammed the test in order to do so. Starfleet quite famously has zero tolerance for those who contravene their rules, so Kirk was drummed out of Starfleet.

The short “Ask Not” has Captain Pike play out an elaborate ruse with a cadet, having her guard him under suspicion of mutiny while he tries to talk her into betraying her orders in a time of crisis, all to evaluate her before having her transferred to the crew of the USS Enterprise. All this is why Starfleet’s official moto is “You Were Probably Going to get PTSD Anyway.”

• Captain Michael Burnham [Sonequa Martin-Green] uses the taxonomic nomenclature ”Felis Catus” to refer to Grudge, Book’s [David Ajala] cat Grudge. In “Schisms” Data receipted a poem about his cat, Ode to Spot, which began with that same term.

• The Alshain appear to be connected with the butterfly like insects that are abundant on their world, either having a symbiotic relationship, or a gestalt species. The Trill introduced in “The Host” can join with symbionts to the benefit of both beings, and the TAS episode “Bem” introduced the Pandorians who are colony creatures which join together to form a single being.

• Having sufficiently upset the Alshain in a classic comic book misunderstanding fight, Burnham and Book lead them in a chase. This whole sequence is very reminiscent of the opening sequences from both “Into Darkness” and “Beyond”.

• Burnham suggests Book would be better off with a hologram goldfish than an actual pet. Captain Jean-Luc Picard had a pet lion fish, Livingston, in his ready room, which apparently Patrick Stewart hated, feeling that keeping a living being for purely ornamental purposes was immoral and something humanity should have moved past by the 24th century.

• Mike McMahan has revealed on twitter that the USS Archimedes is not an Excelsior, but rather Obena-class, but I think it's apparent to everyone where that design lineage began. The USS Excelsior first appeared in "The Search for Spock", was Captained by Sulu in "The Undiscovered Country", and the spaceframe was a Starfleet staple for over a century, including the Enterprise B.

• Archimedes was Greek mathematician who may or may not have created a heat ray using mirrors to defend Syracuse.

• u/kincubba points out that Philippa Georgiou served aboard a USS Archimedes as a science officer in “The Brightest Star”.

• Sonya Gomez was an ensign aboard the USS Enteprise and appeared in two episodes, "Q Who" and "Samaritan Snare". In true lower decks fashion, she spilled hot chocolate on Captain Picard, and helped to rescue Geordi LaForge from the Pakleds. A proud tradition.

• Side note: some fans have speculated that Captain Freeman may have served aboard the Enterprise D as well, explaining why she and Mariner are so familiar with Riker. Freeman calls Gomez an old friend in her log, adding a bit more support for the theory.

• u/OpticalData points out that the sound of the tool Rutherford is using at the start of the episode has the same sound effect as something called a "sonic screwdriver" used by a Doctor Who. I don't remember any doctors named Who across the Star Trek franchise, and MA is also turning up a blank. Unrelated, how many seasons of "Lower Decks" do you think we'll go before Gary Seven and his companion, Isis, show up?

• Rutherford asks Boimler to take his shift in Cetacean Ops. Cetacean Ops was first mentioned via the computer aboard the alternate timeline Enterprise D in "Yesterday's Enterprise", and alluded to in the prime timeline when Geordi tried to distract a group of Ferengi by offering to show them the dolphins aboard ship in "The Perfect Mate".

• Boimler is obsessed with Captain Freeman Day to the point where he apparently recreates the Captain Picard Day banner from "The Pegasus". As Picard himself pointed out in that episode, "It's for the children," but isn't Boimler truly a child at heart?

• "We could end up with some weirdo with a riding crop." Mariner is of course referring to the CO of the Excelsior in "The Search for Spock", Captain Styles and his swagger stick. Styles failed to catch Kirk and company stealing the USS Enterprise to search for Spock, and he was never seen or mentioned again.

I don't want to step on anybody's toes here, but the amount of non-dad jokes here in this subreddit really annoys me. First of all, dad jokes CAN be NSFW, it clearly says so in the sub rules. Secondly, it doesn't automatically make it a dad joke if it's from a conversation between you and your child. Most importantly, the jokes that your CHILDREN tell YOU are not dad jokes. The point of a dad joke is that it's so cheesy only a dad who's trying to be funny would make such a joke. That's it. They are stupid plays on words, lame puns and so on. There has to be a clever pun or wordplay for it to be considered a dad joke.

Again, to all the fellow dads, I apologise if I'm sounding too harsh. But I just needed to get it off my chest.

Pitt-Greenville Airport officials are assessing how they will use more than $3 million in state and federal funds.

More than $2 million for the airport was included in North Carolina’s 2021-23 biennium budget. U.S. Sen. Thom Tillis announced Thursday that Pitt County will receive $1 million as part of a $458 million airport infrastructure grant included in President Joe Biden’s $1 trillion infrastructure improvement package.

“North Carolina airports will receive more than $458 million over the next five years and these investments will go a long way in improving major and regional airports across our state,” Tillis said in a news release. “This airport funding will continue to drive economic development throughout our rural and urban communities, and I look forward to seeing these investments deployed to improve our critical infrastructure assets in the state.”

Pitt-Greenville Airport has a number of needs, said Kim W. “Bill” Hopper, airport executive director.

“We’ll make a determination to where the greatest needs are and use it towards that end,” Hopper said. “It’s a million dollars I didn’t have this morning and for that I am very grateful.”

The airport board also is determining how the state dollars will be spent, he said. The $2 million in state funding could possibly go to the construction of new hangers or other facility improvements.

Hopper said he only learned about the $1 million federal funding Thursday afternoon and needs to learn more about how it can be used.

During the last 18 months, the airport has spent about $300,000 of CARE Act funding on structural and cosmetic improvements to the airport terminal, parking lot and paved areas, Hopper said.

About a third of that money involved maintenance of the airport’s heating and air conditioning system, including the install of filters to mitigate the spread of the COVID-19 virus, he said.

The other improvements involved flooring replacement, making improvements to walls and painting the terminal area.

“A lot of maintenance has been deferred,” Hopper said. “We feel this is the first place many important people coming to Greenville see and we want to make as nice a first impression as possible.”
