Hello everyone! You posted your list of top 10 favorite books or series and we have (finally) completed the list. This list includes all entries with 5 or more votes.
This year had nearly 941 individual votes with nearly 9000 total votes. That's about twice as many votes as we had in 2019! There are about 1100 series on the full list.
Special thanks to the other mods for helping out, especially u/Dianthaa, u/cubansombrero, and u/Cassandra_Sanguine as I could not have finished this without them.

I don't want to step on anybody's toes here, but the amount of non-dad jokes here in this subreddit really annoys me. First of all, dad jokes CAN be NSFW, it clearly says so in the sub rules. Secondly, it doesn't automatically make it a dad joke if it's from a conversation between you and your child. Most importantly, the jokes that your CHILDREN tell YOU are not dad jokes. The point of a dad joke is that it's so cheesy only a dad who's trying to be funny would make such a joke. That's it. They are stupid plays on words, lame puns and so on. There has to be a clever pun or wordplay for it to be considered a dad joke.
Again, to all the fellow dads, I apologise if I'm sounding too harsh. But I just needed to get it off my chest.
2021 was a very big year for me and for this project. As is now my tradition, Iβm closing the year with a retrospective. And as per tradition, Iβll start with a review ofβ¦
In the past Iβve counted how many books I read each year. That made sense when this was a hobby, and I only read books that were interesting, and I tended to read them all the way through. Now that my research is becoming more directed, the way I read is changing. I am much more likely to dip in and out of books, to stop in the middle, or even to pick out certain chapters. Iβm also reading more academic papers (or parts of them). So, here are the books and selected papers I read at least part of (and/or listened to the audiobook of).
My favorite book this year was The Wizard and the Prophet, by Charles Mann (author of 1491). This book contrasts two deeply opposed worldviews, roughly βtechno-optimismβ (the Wizards) vs. βenviro-pessimismβ (the Prophets). The archetype of the Wizard is Norman Borlaug, the agricultural researcher who developed new strains of wheat to improve crop yields in Mexico, India and Pakistan, a development known as the Green Revolution that staved off famine in those areas and may have saved as many as a billion lives. The archetype of the Prophet is William Vogt, author of the influential environmentalist book The Road to Survival (1948), which inspired Rachel Carson and Paul βPopulation Bombβ Ehrlich. The book tells the stories of these two men and their worldviews, and then looks at a handful of major issuesβsuch as soil usage, water resources, energy, and climate changeβthrough both lenses. Mann understands both worldviews deeply and is fair to both, giving them each a very clear statement: βCut back! Cut back! was [Vogtβs] mantra. Otherwise everyone will lose! β¦ Innovate! Innovate! was Borlaugβs cry. Only in that way can everyone win!β
Some major topics I researched this year:
Nuclear power. My favorite book on this topic so far is Why Nuclear Power Has Been a Flop, by Jack Devanney. In brief, Devanney contends that nuclear power ought to be our cheapest source of electricity, but through regulations and bureaucracy it has become too expensive to compete in the energy market.

There are many reasons books may not make the top of this huge list - there are some titles that slid under the radar, or came out pre-internet, or ran out of print, or just plain didn't have the launch budget behind them. Many times books like these simply have not accumulated a large enough readership to reach a broader awareness. I am going to list a few of my favorites that - for whatever reason - received under ten votes, and give you my take on why they might deserve a closer look and more attention. (I may take the list by increments of ten, and go forward from here.)
What are you missing:
Shadows of the Apt by Adrian Tchaikovsky - this is a fast moving, brilliantly wrought series with tremendous characters - you will absolutely grow to love (and even, hate). The villains in the work have so many layers, they are fascinating to read, and the rest of the cast is guaranteed to win your heart. What may have put you off? The society, perhaps - which if you read the blurbs - centers on bugs...but don't do the knee jerk. These characters are human with Art and it is the Art that connects them to the bug kinden. So think of it as 'attributes' - that add a facet to the interlocking layers of intrigue. This story has so much depth and heart - and ranges the gamut from collegiate atmosphere, to strange forests, to gangsters like you've never seen. The scope of this series is immense, and it is one of the very few that interfaces magic with tech. If you were put off by the hooded figure with the sword cover, or the just plain bug - the artwork does not begin to say anything that does justice to this work. It is both character driven and also filled with military campaign detail - all portrayed in ways that will fascinate. Give this one a serious look, it has all the feels!
Navaronne by Carol Berg - This is a loosely named 'series' that really consists of two duologies that overlap the time period and involve a greater picture, but stand as they are. Publication order would be Lighthouse Duet first (Flesh and Spirit/Breath and Bone) and Sanctuary - (Dust and Light/Ash and Silver). If you enjoy characters put through the wringer/written in exquisite first person (Robin Hobb fans check this out!) - if you like shades of gray and seriously incredible magic and world building - these books are amazing. Carol Berg always manages to surprise, throw in twists, grow characters Way past your first impression of them, and even better - she sticks her endings every sin

Dad jokes are supposed to be jokes you can tell a kid and they will understand it and find it funny.
This sub is mostly just NSFW puns now.
If it needs a NSFW tag it's not a dad joke. There should just be a NSFW puns subreddit for that.
Edit* I'm not replying any longer and turning off notifications but to all those that say "no one cares", there sure are a lot of you arguing about it. Maybe I'm wrong but you people don't need to be rude about it. If you really don't care, don't comment.

If there were no quarterbacks born on a given day, I substituted the player with the best passing stats (marked in italics). Passing stats were only recorded from 1933 onwards so I may have missed a QB or two from the 20's.
