I was reminded of the existence of Joyce Maynard recently and instantly thought of Carl. Maynard got early attention for her youthful writing as a teen for magazines, embarked on an affair with J.D Salinger after he wrote to her when her essay on young adulthood appeared in Time magazine (i.e. slid into her DMs), and went on to write a lot of confessional essays, a syndicated column, and books all with intimate, over-sharey details of her life including impulsively adopting two children then dumping them 14 months later when she got tired of them: https://www.theatlantic.com/magazine/archive/2017/10/the-confessionalist/537873/
This essay points to so much overlap between Carl and Maynard, at least to me, although Maynard had a more successful writing career by 18 than Carl has had by 28.
Troubled family dynamic, with a pushy, indulgent mother and a mentally ill father who failed to meet his potential: "Fredelle Maynard was an artistically frustrated housewife with a doctorate in English who was stuck in a small New Hampshire town with an alcoholic husband (failed painter, English professor at the state university) and two smart daughters."
Hackneyed, stale YA writing: "The resulting essay describes sweeping trends, self-consciously positions its young author as the voice of her generation, and locates almost nothing fresh about the nature of youth."
Constant, conveniently evolving narratives around the people in her life, depending on what serves her best: "The husband spent the duration of her 1980s syndicated column, “Domestic Affairs,” as the ideal partner; in the ’90s (after the divorce) he was revealed in subsequent essays and books as a cruel bastard who pressured her to get an abortion and filed a motion to have her declared an unfit mother. Lately, he has emerged as the co-victim of a bad union.'
Supreme selfishness coupled with knee-jerk decision making and grand gestures: "At age 55, her children grown, Maynard had “missed being a parent as much as a person crossing the desert misses water.” So she sent away for a CD-rom from an international adoption agency, liked what she saw at an Ethiopian orphanage, and traveled to Africa to adopt two sisters: “They were ravenous for meat. ‘I love you I love you I love you,’ they told me.” But she soon tired of the responsibility. In the novel, one of the characters recalls the time her teacher Suzanne Stone invited her and a schoolmate to her house to watch the Twin Peaks movie. She adds that the movie had scenes that they definitely wouldn't have shown on TV, and said she was getting flashbacks to her stepfather abusing her. [SPOILERS]: She later witnesses Suzanne and fellow student Jimmy apparently reenacting the scene where Laura is tied up.
The movie adaptation left this scene out completely; it's also based on a real crime story, in which the teens claim they watched the sexually explicit movie, 9½ Weeks, with their teacher, Pamela Smart.
This is Joyce Maynard's memoir about her life with her two a parents, and her later relationship with J.D.Salinger. Maynard's mother is a nightmarish N. Beautiful, charming, and a genuinely talented writer. She also insisted on bathing Joyce until she was twelve, (control) refusing to go out for dinner-ever, (control) and reading Joyce's diary. She read her diary and then wrote her own interpretation of Joyce's life in it! She also interviewed Joyce's friends about their sex lives under the pretence that she was writing an article. (She wasn't) She insisted on being the centre of attention, coming to Joyce's wedding in a Mexican lace dress without a bra. After Joyce pleaded with her to get along better with her husband, her mother refused to speak to her for years.

I am really proud of myself for leaving her. I didn't want to leave, I was still in love and was absolutely devastated by the way she was treating me. She was betraying what I thought were the values of the relationship, bc I treated her feelings as deeply precious, my ultimate priority. Then she illustrated for me several times in quick succession how very little my personhood meant to her in comparison.
I desire to write more about my experience sometime bc it deeply affected me and I want to tell people about it. I really relate to pieces of media and personal accounts about narcissistic, histrionic, and psychopathic people following my relationship with my ex. Has anybody read or seen To Die For by Joyce Maynard? It's a fictionalized account of the Pamela Smart case (Tw CSA, murder). My ex wasn't violent and AFAIK wasn't planning any murders Lol but she used sex in a dark way to control and manipulate others. She was entirely self referential, everything in her world was ONLY about her and her journey and her unendingly deep well of suffering.
I am so grateful to myself for cutting contact with her 4 years ago, even though my heart was in pieces over it. Everything in me wanted to continue allowing her to abuse me but I chose my personal value of not allowing abuse in my life.

For context I'm a Refuse Driver (Garbage man) & today I was on food waste. After I'd tipped I was checking the wagon for any defects when I spotted a lone pea balanced on the lifts.
