Now hear me out for just a second. Instead of God inspiring Nephi 2,000 years earlier to duplicate a whole section of the story on the engraved plates because he knew someday they'd be lost, why didn't he just inspire Joseph to make a copy of the 116 pages and allow Martin to take the duplicate because God would have known that they'd become lost.
Then not only would they have been preserved much, much more easily, BUT they could also have been used by Joseph to prove malintent by Lucy or whoever was going to change the 116 pages.
They also would have proven an evidence of Prophethood by Joseph as he would be able to produce the original and claim God inspired him to make a copy before giving a copy to Martin.
The way God did it currently doesn't make any sense when better more "omniscient being" or "smarter" type arrangements could have been made.

This also shows it wasn't "prophetic", as some members would like to claim, for Joseph Smith to remove the apocrypha from his translation (plagiarism of Adam Clark's Bible commentary) before the 1885 removal of the apocrypha from the King James Translation, as the issue was discussed centuries before him.
I also cynically speculate Joseph Smith removed the apocrypha so that members would not notice he stole the name "Nephi" from 2 Maccabees, 136, as I detailed in another post.
In 1832 Joseph Smith wrote an account regarding the incident where Martin Harris traveled to New York to verify Joseph Smiths translation of the Book of Mormon. The man he met with was named Charles Anthon, american and classical scholar.
Here is the first account,
"Because of his faith⦠the Lord appeared unto [Martin Harris] in a vision and showed unto him his marvelous work which he was about to do. He immediately came to Susquehanna and said the Lord had shown him that he must go to New York City with some of the characters, so we proceeded to copy some of them.
And he took his journey to the Eastern Cities and to the learned, saying, βRead this, I pray thee.β And the learned said, βI cannot, but if he would bring the plates they would read it.β But the Lord had forbid it, and he returned to me and gave them to me to translate.
And I said βI cannot, for I am not learned.β But the Lord had prepared spectacles for to read the Book; therefore I commenced translating the characters, and thus the prophecy of Isaiah was fulfilled which is written in the 29 chapter concerning the book.

There is a second account narrated by Joseph Smith in 1838 regarding the same encounter. (this was narrated by Joseph Smith, but from the perspective of Martin Harris.)
I went to the city of New York, and presented the characters which had been translated, with the translation thereof, to Professor Charles Anthon, a gentleman celebrated for his literary attainments. Professor Anthon stated that the translation was correct, more so than any he had before seen translated from the Egyptian. I then showed him those which were not yet translated, and he said that they were Egyptian, Chaldaic, Assyriac, and Arabic; and he said they were true characters. He gave me a certificate, certifying to the people of Palmyra that they were true characters, and that the translation of such of them as had been translated was also correct. I took the certificate and put it into my pocket, and was just leaving the house, when Mr. Anthon called me back, and asked me how the young man found out that there were gold plates in the place where he found them. I answered that an angel of God had revealed it unto him.

"... in relation to assistance, I always prefer dealing with men rather than their wives." was the reply from Joseph Smith.
Lucy was not to be put off, and is the most likely suspect in the disappearance of the lost 116 pages. This to see if JS could reproduce the writings. He couldn't.
JS would have the last laugh, however. After the translation was complete, JS received a 'revelation' for Martin: "I command you, that thou shalt not covet thine own property, but impart freely to the printing of the Book of Mormon." Martin mortgaged his farm to pay for the printing, and lost 151 acres when the book didn't sell.
