A list of puns related to "John Mcwhorter"
I was listening to this podcast today, and I wanted to ask about a couple of things in it, so I figured I would give links to the various sections I was curious about, and let people reply to whichever section they wanted to take the time to listen to:
21:53-32:40 - Talking about wokeness at The Julliard School and elsewhere.
36:46-40:30 - McWhorter talks about why this stuff bothers him so much.
40:30-50:05 - Talking about George Floyd as a father (this isn't especially interesting to me, but it's certainly something some people might have a strong opinion about).
50:08- - Glenn asks if he should go on Tucker Carlson. I actually thought this was a really interesting question, and a difficult one to answer, and I was curious what other people thought about the consequences of being tainted by having appeared on Fox News, and it's interesting to see the thought process that goes on for Glenn Loury and those like him about it.
So Iβve never listened to Glenn Loury podcast but I searched Apple podcast for John McWhorter and came across and episode of Glennβs show from late Aprilβ¦ what the fuck?
I was expecting a nuanced discussion on race coming into it after listening to McWhorterβs other work but many of Glennβs comments just came off like the script for a conservative snuff film. He makes several statements like βthere is something PATHOLOGICALLY wrong with the black communityβ or when he mentions Obama in the context of race he says βBarrack HUSSEIN Obamaβ as if to highlight what there, his middle eastern name? Granted McWhorter calls him on his shit and says that Glenn should stray from that type of language because it suggest genetic decencies. Then Glenn just drones on about how heβs βmostly with the policeβ and the blacks have a βcrimeβ problemβ¦ as if to completely ignore the link between crime and poverty. I walked in hoping to hear a nuanced discussion but that Glenn guy really rubbed me the wrong way. I canβt imagine any intellectually honest person listening to this guy. He seems a few steps away from Candace Owens who I vehemently despise.
I still like McWhorter though because I think heβs fairly balanced in his approach.
Hi Reddit! Iβm John McWhorter, professor of linguistics, American studies, and music history at Columbia University and host of the Lexicon Valley podcast on Slate. Iβve written multiple books that examine the way we speak, write, and read.
In my new book, NINE NASTY WORDS, I investigate nine of our favorite curse words from every angle β historical, sociological, political, and linguistic β to show how, as language evolves, so, too, does what we consider profane or unspeakable. I share where our urge to curse comes from(hint: itβs not the same part of the brain that processes speech), why βhellβ is the most confoundingly illogical swear word, and why you do, in fact, need all of those different slang words for βphallus,β among other topics, with the goal of helping readers understand what makes these (mostly) 4-letter words so much more than words.
If you have questions about the origin of the word βf*ck,β todayβs most taboo swear words, George Carlinβs infamous comedy routine, or just want to share your favorite piece of profanity, I am here for it. AMA!

John McWhorter is a famous linguist and public intellectual who is publishing an upcoming book on "Woke Racism"; he is known, along with Professor Glenn Loury, as one of the "black guys at Bloggingheads.TV." He has written a response in Quillette to another Quillette piece by Professor Hanna that he calls "a sober, courteous critique of black 'conservative' thought." I think this is a good example of two people who disagree on some things but can both write fair-minded critiques that elevate the conversation.
Article One: The Limits of Black Conservative Thought
Article Two: On Victimhood and Culture: A reply to Aaron Hanna
These four individuals are described as the "anti-conformists of anti-racism."
I just listened to John McWhorter on Bill Maher. His position and discussion regarding a logical approach to racism/cancel culture had me order his book Nine Nasty Words. I just wanted to turn to this sub, as I enjoy what people have to say about different literature and concepts that uphold or dispel approaches to these issues.
I know John has been on the Vox-era EKS when Jane was guest hosting, as well as The Weeds with Matt, and The Argument with Jane, but none of those quite scratched the itch for me. I think it would be awesome to have a 60-90 minute episode of John talking to Ezra. I don't even care what topic, but I think we can imagine what they would cover. In any case, I have high hopes for an intelligent, fair, and thoughtful conversation between these two.
I've been rewatching so many of their conversations but can't seem to find this.
Glenn was doing one of his epic rants, I think it this was on education but I'm not sure. He was so impassioned that his voice cracked at some points. All I remember are these phrases:
"honed and developed"
"it's a lie, John!"
(John in response) "I am as angry as you, Glenn"
Please help me find this?
This article is an excerpt from McWhorter's new book, being released on his substack, in 5 installments (at $5 each). Some here have expressed interest in discussing this article, which contains an overview of salient points.
There is the term Neoracist itself - always handy to name the beast.
Ten listed "Third Wave Antiracist tenets," are included in brief bulletpoints.
"The self-contradiction of these tenets is crucial, in revealing that Third Wave Antiracism is not a philosophy but a religion."
He's just getting warmed up.
