Here’s the thing - this pretty much buttons up a long standing project I’ve had rolling, more or less, all year. I gave a pretty long-winded, detailed account of how and why I’d bought this large set of Three Stooges’ shorts and how I failed to notice a separate DVD with two full length feature films - Rockin’ in the Rockies (1945), a dismal film and Have Rocket, Will Travel (1959) - this brings the official project to a close. Neither film was anywhere close to what I’d call enjoyable to watch but this was the better of the two.
What we have is a late-in-the-game Three Stooges film where they manage to do the right thing by paradoxically, doing all the wrong things. A scientist working on a rocket fuel formula for the space race befriends the Stooges who are maintenance workers and they, in turn, help her create the right mixture but wind up on the rocket… a simple set up that could have easily been a 15-20 minute short, but stretched to feature length.
This isn’t a good film, really (obviously) made for young kids and a nickel matinee. Space and science were consuming the collective unconscious of America at the time - it seemed to have ahold of everyone’s mind, alternating between scaring the hell out of people and saving them like nothing else could at the same time. There’s very little point in me breaking the movie down in detail - it was pretty painful to watch. I’m not sorry I watched it but I doubt I’d watch it twice.
You might think I’m winding the Stooges down here on a sour note and, ok - to be fair, I am, but not really… I loved them when I was a kid, I appreciated how they helped me lighten my daughter’s heart after her bad experiences at school - I had no expectation for the films. Honestly, my history with The Three Stooges is a positive one and that’s more important than a couple of bad films.
Beyond the entertainment the collection of shorts provided me, this daily appointment with the Stooges proved to be a learning opportunity as I dug into the trio’s history here and there as the programs slipped from the 30s, into the war years and recovery of the 40s, and their decline in the 50s. For context I'm a Refuse Driver (Garbage man) & today I was on food waste. After I'd tipped I was checking the wagon for any defects when I spotted a lone pea balanced on the lifts.
