Any updates on Jesse Martin's health?
The Joe West character sounded like he was slurring / stoned in the last episode.
I hope he's OK. Back injuries suck.
Right when he's talking to Barry about what's going to happen in Crisis, man that scene really hit me in the feels and Jesse did an amazing job of delivering that scene.
My husband and I watch The Flash and we’ve noticed that Jesse L. Martin has been sitting down in all of his scenes. Are we crazy or is he injured? –Rachel
No, you are not crazy but perceptive – though this week we did see Joe leaning in a doorway at the CCPD. I’m hearing that Martin suffered a back injury over the hiatus. In fact, a studio rep confirms for TVLine that the actor will be taking a medical leave from the CW hit, adding: “We wish him a full and speedy recovery and look forward to his return as Detective Joe West.” (It’s unclear at this time exactly when and for how long Joe’s absence will be felt on screen, but sources tell me it will be addressed at some point.)

The first couple episodes of S5, I was joking around wondering why Joe has always been sitting in every scene. Just reading a newspaper like he got nothing else better to do. But now just watching this last episode... He's still just sitting down.
His speech is kinda slurred, he doesn't act with that spark he had before... It's weird but concerning. Idk, maybe it's just a complete coincidence. But besides that one scene where he was leaning on the door post (they couldn't even show him walking) he hasn't gotten up once this season yet.
Hope he's okay, because him and Tom Cavanagh are easily the best actors on this show imo. Throughout this show's ups and downs, Joe has consistently been a solid dude.
Not all of us are Tom Cavanagh fanboys/fangirls. I easily ignore every other reiteration of Wells outside of Eobard. So no, not everyone watches for Tom. I wouldn't watch at all if it weren't for Grant, Candice, Carlos and Jesse.
Jesse in particular doesn't get the praise he deserves because he's not given the opportunity to scenery chew like Tom does. Todd Helbing and AJK have admitted hard-ons for Tom and will give him storylines for the hell of it. Example: the unnecessary inclusion of Sherloque when there are already 2 detectives and an investigative reporter on the team. Every time Jesse has been asked to play an alternate version of himself, he nailed it.
He looked good. Hopefully he’s back to Flash soon.
All the scenes he’s been in this season he’s been sitting down. He hasn’t had one standing scene that I remember.
I know it was a joke from the fans who noticed this, but now I'm just concerned that something serious must've happened to him, for him to always be sitting down in all of his scenes lately.
Jesse showed up for Fox's production of Rent Live to sing Seasons of Love with the rest of the OG cast. I know this is nothing related to Flash but it was good to see him not sitting.
i loved the way he acted. i literally felt trapped and felt for the guy.
If watching 4 seasons of Arrow and 2 seasons of The Flash has taught me anything...its that Joe and Captain Lance are both metahumans. Their superpowers are the ability to make grown men cry...
I don't know if talking about one of the actors is fair game for making a post, but if it is, this is about the amazingness that is the acting of Jesse L Martin.
I've always been a fan of him and if anyone else likes his work, in the spirit of the holiday, go watch A Christmas Carol: The Musical. Martin plays the Ghost of Christmas Present and, as usual, he's amazing.
And if you aren't the Christmas or musical type, go watch seasons 10 to 18 of Law and Order. Another great example of how awesome he is at playing detective roles. It's like he did all that work for years now he gets to play an even cooler detective because he's Joe freaking West.
Anyway, I absolutely love what he's doing with the part so far and I don't think that they could've picked a better actor for the part. I'm just hoping he doesn't pull a Tommy Merlyn or something because he's just such a good character.
And also I think he helps balance out Wells' character nicely. He's like the fatherly voice of reason to Wells' potentially-evil, sciencey guy voice of reason.
