Questions Answers
Hi Jessamyn! I know you've written a bunch of things and given a bunch of talks about the "digital divide." Do you see this divide narrowing at all? Where have we made progress and how has this digital divide changed within the last five years? The thing I tell people the most is that there are multiple divides. We've seen the economic one narrowing a lot, most people now have access to a computer+internet at their library. However, we're seeing an empowerment or inclusion divide: people who are doing real what I like to call "computing" and people who just use technology as passive entertainment and shopoing systems.
There is nothing wrong with entertainment and nothing (mostly) wrong with shopping but the internet (and the resultant culture that is being built on top of it) SHOULD be for everyone and it's mostly being run by not-everyone. Wikipedia is an example that everyone loves to hate but there are other issues like women in tech, people of color on Twitter, accessibility for people with disabilities online.
Every time you have to have a huge FIGHT to gain access, as a person who is struggling, you feel that those places are not for you. That's something that we can't fix with classes and low cost tech because it's a cultural issue.
So, the good news is that I'm seeing more people with technology that they know how to use, more people being able to solve their own technological problems but I'm also seeing a lot of people who feel that online spaces are not "for them" or who don't feel that if they have a problem with something technologically (facebook privacy settings, all the stuff on gmail that is hard if you have a shaky hand or a poor memory) that they have the toolkit to solve it.
It's challenging because there's not a huge infrastructure (yet?) for helping people past this and having people being able to find their spaces and ensuring them that those spaces are FOR THEM.
Bigger topic than just this response, but I see it narrowing in some places as it widens in others.

Friend acquires a lot of cheese. What to do with it?

I AM NOT THE OP. My personal cheese problems are entirely emotional, not logistical. The OP is Wordshore on MetaFilter.

Original post

August 4, 2016 4:32 PM

For complicated / irrelevant reasons a friend has suddenly acquired 18 pounds of Red Leicester cheese. It is good quality. However (again, complicated reasons) the cheese must be moved, used or transformed into something else within the next 72 hours or so.

My friend lives mostly on his own, so can't have a cheese party, and does not want the neighbors finding out about this cheese anyway so cannot invite them. He can't eat it all in this time for health reasons (18 pounds). There are no food banks nearby he can donate to, and moving the cheese is problematic anyway (though not impossible). He can cook, though not to a great extent. It would be a shame for this cheese to just be disposed of; what else could he do with it? Are there recipes that can use up 18 pounds of cheese and transform it into (preferably) foodstuff that are not cheese-centric?

[Aside from clamoring for more information, the comments suggest donating the cheese, requesting to have the cheese donated, freezing it, dumping it outside of someone’s door, portioning it up and taking 6lbs with them every time they leave the apartment, abusing flat rate mailing envelopes, fancy cheese sculptures, arranging for it to be found on the Appalachian Trail, and more. Check out the thread for many excellent cooking suggestions.]

UPDATE

August 6, 2016 3:04 AM

I've sent the mods a much longer explanation, as a confirmation that this isn't some made-up hokey but is real. I have seen 18 pounds of quality Red Leicester cheese and I've even run my finger all along one edge of it and believe me, it is real. Oh, yes. I have seen the promised land, Mefites.

One other point - it really is a friend, and is not me talking in the third person or some odd writing thing like that.

Will do a full explanation at some point on here later in the month, unless there's any legal or ethical impediment. Currently I don't know how this (frankly ridiculous and avoidable) situation will play itself out, especially as there are several people involved who are perhaps not the most pleasant, or the most sensible, of people. (probably including me for getting involved in this)

SERIOUS: This subreddit needs to understand what a "dad joke" really means.

I don't want to step on anybody's toes here, but the amount of non-dad jokes here in this subreddit really annoys me. First of all, dad jokes CAN be NSFW, it clearly says so in the sub rules. Secondly, it doesn't automatically make it a dad joke if it's from a conversation between you and your child. Most importantly, the jokes that your CHILDREN tell YOU are not dad jokes. The point of a dad joke is that it's so cheesy only a dad who's trying to be funny would make such a joke. That's it. They are stupid plays on words, lame puns and so on. There has to be a clever pun or wordplay for it to be considered a dad joke.

Again, to all the fellow dads, I apologise if I'm sounding too harsh. But I just needed to get it off my chest.

Just because it's a joke, doesn't mean it's a dad joke

Alot of great jokes get posted here! However just because you have a joke, doesn't mean it's a dad joke.

THIS IS NOT ABOUT NSFW, THIS IS ABOUT LONG JOKES, BLONDE JOKES, SEXUAL JOKES, KNOCK KNOCK JOKES, POLITICAL JOKES, ETC BEING POSTED IN A DAD JOKE SUB

Try telling these sexual jokes that get posted here, to your kid and see how your spouse likes it.. if that goes well, Try telling one of your friends kid about your sex life being like Coca cola, first it was normal, than light and now zero , and see if the parents are OK with you telling their kid the "dad joke"

I'm not even referencing the NSFW, I'm saying Dad jokes are corny, and sometimes painful, not sexual

So check out r/jokes for all types of jokes

r/unclejokes for dirty jokes

r/3amjokes for real weird and alot of OC

r/cleandadjokes If your really sick of seeing not dad jokes in r/dadjokes

Punchline !

Edit: this is not a post about NSFW , This is about jokes, knock knock jokes, blonde jokes, political jokes etc being posted in a dad joke sub

Edit 2: don't touch the thermostat

Black Water Sister by Zen Cho

Genre: Fantasy

  • Age group: Adult
  • Pub. date: May 11th 2021 by Ace Books
  • Format: Audiobook
  • Pages: 370
  • Goodreads link

>A reluctant medium discovers the ties that bind can unleash a dangerous power in this compelling Malaysian-set contemporary fantasy.
Jessamyn Teoh is closeted, broke and moving back to Malaysia, a country she left when she was a toddler. So when Jess starts hearing voices, she chalks it up to stress. But there's only one voice in her head, and it claims to be the ghost of her estranged grandmother, Ah Ma. In life Ah Ma was a spirit medium, the avatar of a mysterious deity called the Black Water Sister. Now she's determined to settle a score against a gang boss who has offended the god--and she's decided Jess is going to help her do it.
Drawn into a world of gods, ghosts, and family secrets, Jess finds that making deals with capricious spirits is a dangerous business. As Jess fights for retribution for Ah Ma, she'll also need to regain control of her body and destiny. If she fails, the Black Water Sister may finish her off for good.

I've been sleeping on Zen Cho and I have regrets, because I loved this book completely. Good thing our Goodreads book of the month chose it for our November read.

First a quick note on the audiobook, it's very good. Well, to expand I need to go into the beautiful flowy way this book is written. It's set in Malasya and written to reflect that, so most of the dialogue, sort of has a different grammar. I don't think it's actually Manglish since I was able to understand all the words just fine, but sentences tend to always end with an interrogative word, or if none fits a "la". It almost feels like every spoken sentence is an invitation. The narrator made a great job of interpreting these and giving the characters unique voices, it was a joy to listen to.

Definitely for me one of the highlights of the book was how it showed Malasian culture (I don't know what half the foods mentioned were but they sound so good). A key point is how people from all different backgrounds relate to the local deities and spiritual entities. I loved how real everything felt, an
