Psychology professor Jean Twenge blames smartphones for "worst mental health crisis in decades"

You know those chain mails from your loudmouth uncle, grandma, in-laws, etc. about "kids these days so soft and spoiled unlike when I was growing up?" Well, they have the perfect figurehead to frame their views in an academic manner: San Diego State University psychology professor Jean Twenge. One needs not look further than her book titles to see what she's all about: Generation Me: Why Today’s Young Americans Are More Confident, Assertive, Entitled β€” and More Miserable Than Ever Before and The Narcissism Epidemic: Living in the Age of Entitlement.

Because of her appealing pop psychology, she gets plenty of platforms on mainstream media including NPR. What's up with All Things Considered having a "phones are bad" story every couple of weeks?

> So, you look at the pattern of loneliness. It suddenly begins to increase around 2012. And the majority of Americans had a cell phone by the end of 2012, according to the Pew Center.

> Given that using social media for more hours is linked to more loneliness, and that smartphones were used by the majority of Americans around 2012, and that's the same time loneliness increases, that's very suspicious. You can't absolutely prove causation, but by a bunch of different studies, there's this connection between spending a lot of time on social media and feeling lonely.

And:

> The first is just awareness that spending a lot of time on the phone is not harmless and that if you're spending a lot of time on the phone, then it may take away from activities that might be more beneficial for psychological well-being, like spending time with people in person.

Why We Need a New Utopia :

The Destruction of the Grand Narrative

Today, our dreams can’t even begin before we are woken up. According to the clichΓ©, dreams have a way of turning into nightmares. Utopias are a breeding ground for discord, violence, even genocide. Utopias ultimately become dystopias; in fact, a utopia is a dystopia. β€œHuman progress is a myth,” goes another clichΓ©. And yet we ourselves have managed to build the medieval paradise. True, history is full of horrifying forms of utopianism – fascism, communism, Nazism – just as every religion has also spawned fanatical sects. But if one religious radical incites violence, should we automatically write off the whole religion? So why write off the utopianism? Should we simply stop dreaming of a better world altogether? No, of course not.

But that’s precisely what is happening. Optimism and pessimism have become synonymous with consumer confidence or the lack thereof. Radical ideas about a different world have become almost literally unthinkable. The expectations of what we as a society can achieve have been dramatically eroded, leaving us with the cold, hard truth that without utopia, all that remains is a technocracy. Politics has been watered down to problem management. Voters swing back and forth not because the parties are so different, but because it’s barely possible to tell them apart, and what now separates right from left is a percentage point or two on the income tax rate.

We see it in journalism, which portrays politics as a game in which the stakes are not ideals, but careers. We see it in academia, where everybody is too busy writing to read, too busy publishing to debate. In fact, the twenty-first-century university resembles nothing so much as a factory, as do our hospitals, schools, and TV networks. What counts is achieving targets. Whether it’s the growth of the economy, audience shares, publications – slowly but surely, quality is being replaced by quantity. And driving it all is a force sometimes called β€œliberalism,” an ideology that has been all but hollowed out. What’s important now is to β€œjust be yourself” and β€œdo your thing.” Freedom may be our highest ideal, but ours has become an empty freedom. Our fear of moralizing in any form has made morality a taboo in the public debate.

The public arena should be β€œneutral,” after all – yet never before has it been so paternalistic. On every street corner we’re baited to booze, binge, borrow, buy, toil, stress, and swindle. Whatever we may tell ourse
