βWe had been told, on leaving our native soil, that we were going to defend the sacred rights conferred on us by so many of our citizens settled overseas, so many years of our presence, so many benefits brought by us to populations in need of our assistance and our civilization. We were able to verify that all this was true, and, because it was true, we did not hesitate to shed our quota of blood, to sacrifice our youth and our hopes. We regretted nothing, but whereas we over here are inspired by this frame of mind, I am told that in Rome factions and conspiracies are rife, that treachery flourishes, and that many people in their uncertainty and confusion lend a ready ear to the dire temptations of relinquishment and vilify our action. I cannot believe that all this is true and yet recent wars have shown how pernicious such a state of mind could be and to where it could lead. Make haste to reassure me, I beg you, and tell me that our fellow-citizens understand us, support us and protect us as we ourselves are protecting the glory of the Empire. If it should be otherwise, if we should have to leave our bleached bones on these desert sands in vain, then beware of the anger of the Legions!
-Introduction to The Centurions by Jean LartΓ©guy
I'm going to go in a slightly different direction in this post and discuss the 1960s book 'The Centurions.' A book about French Paratroopers in Vietnam and Algeria. It was an absolutely fascinating book to me, as it goes into great lengths of the mindsest of soldiers fighting against political insurgency attempting to remain human while refusing to lose the war. The book is written in three parts, the first being the Paras reminiscing about home and their pasts while fighting the brainwashing of a Viet Minh Prisoner Of War (POW) camp, the second is their grappling with France and the peace that followed and the third is set in Algeria and Egypt as France in the 1950s hopped from one colonial war to another. To me, it's a strangely paradoxical book; the characters are flawed, but forgivable, their actions forgivable, yet heinous and their analysis cutting while lacking.
The Author of The Centurions, Jean LartΓ©guy, was himself a former Para, and wrote this based on his own experiences in both Vietnam and Algeria. Likewise, many of the characters are based on real people or composites of them. It also has many fans in the real world, such as US Army General David Petraeus (ret.) and former Israeli Prime Minister Ariel Sharo

Go post NSFW jokes somewhere else. If I can't tell my kids this joke, then it is not a DAD JOKE.
If you feel it's appropriate to share NSFW jokes with your kids, that's on you. But a real, true dad joke should work for anyone's kid.
Mods... If you exist... Please, stop this madness. Rule #6 should simply not allow NSFW or (wtf) NSFL tags. Also, remember that MINORS browse this subreddit too? Why put that in rule #6, then allow NSFW???
Please consider changing rule #6. I love this sub, but the recent influx of NSFW tagged posts that get all the upvotes, just seem wrong when there are good solid DAD jokes being overlooked because of them.
Thank you,
A Dad.
So far nobody has given me a straight answer
I am currently in the hospital. I had a back operation yesterday. The surgical nurse came in my room and started asking questions about my back. She asked me if I had any falls during the last year. I responded just one. It was after summer.
She laughed and said in 20 years of doing this she never was told that joke.

Keep in mind, my son is 4 years old, so everything is an original to him.
I had to work late into the evening yesterday, and he was just going to bed when I got home. I had left home for the office nearly 14 hours prior, had a long day, lots of meetings, traffic, etc.
When I walked through the door, I was exhausted, run down, and starving. My wife hugged me and asked how my day was, and I replied, "Done. It was a good day, but has got me exhausted. I just want to grab a bite and go to bed. I'm hungry."
From my son's bedroom, I hear him shout, "Hi Hungry! Nice to meet you!"
Not only did it make me laugh, but I completely forgot about how hungry and tired I was. I went to his bedroom, and we laughed together about it. It was exactly what I needed.
