Sorry if this question isnβt appropriate for this sub, itβs something Iβve always wondered and never been able to find an answer to. Spoilers for Dear Evan Hansen below.
In the show, Evan pretends he was the best friend of a boy at his school (Connor) who committed suicide. Evan and his friend Jared write and backdate fake emails as βproofβ of this friendship to show Connorβs family. Eventually Evan and Jared create a suicide prevention/awareness group with the help of another classmate (Alana) who isnβt aware that Evan and Connorβs friendship is a lie. The group blows up online after a speech of Evan talking about Connor goes viral. They start a kickstarter campaign to build a memorial orchard for Connor, with a goal of $50,000. Alana starts posting Evan and Connorβs fake emails online to gain more attention, and they eventually surpass their fundraising goal. The guilt becomes too much for Evan and he finally confesses the truth to Connorβs family. Connorβs family keep the information to themselves, so the only people who know that Evan and Connorβs friendship was a lie are Evan, Jared and Connorβs family. The memorial orchard is built with the Kickstarter money and the suicide prevention/awareness group is presumably disbanded.
So, what Iβm wondering is could Evan and Jared (and maybe even Alana) potentially be charged with anything if the truth got out? The Kickstarter wasnβt really a scam because all of the money was spent exactly how they said it would be, but would people have been as willing to donate if they didnβt believe Evan was Connorβs best friend? If they didnβt see the fake email exchanges?
Evan/Jared/Alana are all in their last year of high school so are most likely 17, and Iβm pretty sure the show is set in New York if that makes a difference. Thanks in advance if anyone wants to humour me with an answer :)

Consider this: since that game they have played 18 "clutch" (the score within five points in the final five minutes) games, winning 11 of them (.611 win percentage). Before? 5-15 (.250). Last season? 15-34 (.306). Boston has learned how to win close games and that's why they'll absolutely deserve any playoff spot they might sneak into.
