Okay, I know Lucretia is technically listed as a contralto. But the lines are often blurred. Often, the same role could be termed a low mezzo or contralto. I figured I would just include this one as an example of a low female voice in modern opera. There is also another, minor role sung by a mezzo, that of Lucretia's nurse Bianca.
Lucretia is my second favorite Britten opera, second only to Turn of the Screw . It is unique, interesting, and dynamic. The story is a tear-jerker. The music, typical of Britten, is haunting and wild.
It's been 47 years since Janice Marie Hannigan disappeared from Wapato, Washington on December 24th, 1971. In the time that has passed, few answers have arisen as to the fate of the 16-year-old high school sophomore. The mysterious circumstances surrounding her disappearance, as well as the lack of meaningful investigation, dig at the heart of a widespread tragedy in the Northwest, and across the nation: the missing Indigenous girls and women who time seems to have forgotten.
Janice, a sophomore at White Swan High School and the eldest of seven siblings, was last seen on December 24th, 1971. Several weeks prior to her disappearance, she had been chosen as a candidate for queen of the Intertribal Veterans Day Ceremony. She was reportedly worried about her parent's recent separation, and had remained with her father at the family's home in Toppenish, WA, while her other siblings moved with their mother to nearby Buena, WA. On December 21st, 1971, Janice was admitted to the hospital and treated for bruising on her head. Medical records fail to indicate what hospital she was admitted to, and do not identify what caused the bruising. She was discharged three days later on December 24th, 1971. Janice did not return home. She has never been heard from again.
Missing person fliers distributed in the Yakima area display a photograph of Janice around the time she vanished, dressed in pale pink with long, thick dark hair. According to the flier, Janice went missing from Wapato on March 1, 1971. The Yakama Nation Police Department reports her as deceased on the same date. Both reports are inaccurate, since Janice was known to have attended White Swan High School in November of 1971, and to have been admitted to the hospital in December of that year. Many national missing person databases reiterate that Janice was distressed about her parent's separation, and suggest that she may have run away from home. Investigators, however, have apparently told Hannigan's sister that they believe Martin Hannigan, Janice's father, may have "done something" related to the teenager's disappearance. Shanta Marie Johnson was born on 1/03/1989 in South Carolina, Shanta's biological mother used drugs during her pregnancy and Shanta tested positive for cocaine at birth. It is highly likely she had developmental and medical problems due to this and her biological mother's parental rights were revoked. Shanta was classified as a special needs child.
As wards of the state, Shanta and her biological brother were placed in the foster home of Susan and Willie Johnson. The Johnsons had started adoption proceedings at the time of Shanta's disappearance.
According to Susan Johnson, on July 19, 1992, Susan and Shanta went to the Briarcliffe Mall in Myrtle Beach, South Carolina. At approximately 3:30pm, Shanta disappeared from the K-Mart toy department, after reviewing surveillance videos, authorities identified Susan entering the store alone with no signs of Shanta on any of the cameras.
At the time of her disappearance her biological mother was in jail on drug charges but her biological family was having a family reunion nearby. Investigators initially believed Shanta had been abducted by her biological family or that Susan had willingly relinquished Shanta to her family but they were able to rule out these possibilities.
Due to the fact that Shanta was missing under the Johnson's care, her biological brother was removed from the Johnson home and placed with another family, where he was later adopted.
In July 1995, three years after Shanta's disappearance, Susan was charged with child abuse based on reports from a hospital nurse. One month before Shanta disappeared she was taken to the hospital where Shanta showed fearfulness towards Susan and signs of physical abuse (her personality had also changed from being extroverted and she'd begun biting her nails until they bled.) Authorities also had reports from Shanta's babysitter stating that Shanta told her that Susan burnt her with hot oil, but Susan disputed this stating it was sunburn. The results of these charges are unknown.
Authorities searched property belonging to the Johnson family and found evidence linked to Shanta and believe that at some point she'd been buried there but possibly been moved. Authorities believe that Shanta was a victim of homicide and Susan is their prime suspect.
