Ever since the launch of the telescope I keep seeing articles like “The JW’s first sun shield is deployed.” Then the next day “the JW was just able to extend its antenna.”
I’m absolutely paraphrasing, but hopefully you get the idea. I guess I don’t understand why if the JW was launched over 10 days ago that it’s still getting set up, up there?
The James Webb sun shield is complex, and requires intricate mechanisms to allow for the precise tensioning of 5 layers of thin material to ensure separation. Why could it not use a single sheet of multilayer insulation in which the layers are separated by a mesh as per conventional satellite insulation? This would only require tensioning of a single sheet and therefore be simpler to implement.
For those who aren't aware, r/shield has been getting more and more heated lately over what counts as canon. While many are willing to admit the show is not canon, others are a bit more hardline. Well, it all came to a head today when none other than James Gunn chimed in on Twitter.
The comments section isn't huge as of yet, but sometimes small drama is good drama too.
