The "Mission Impossible" series stopped numbering its sequels because the studio didn't want people to call the sixth movie "MI6", which would make them think of the rival "James Bond" franchise.

James Bond and Mission: Impossible are the two biggest and most lucrative spy movie franchises in the world right now, both of them are famous for featuring larger-than-life protagonists who pull off ridiculous death-defying stunts and battle comically evil villains, and both of them have their roots in 1960s pop culture; one is a movie series that's been running since 1962, and the other is a very loose continuation of a TV show that first started airing in 1966.

They're also known for being relatively light on plot, but also very self-aware of that fact. It's pretty well-known that most people only watch them for the crazy stunts and over-the-top action, which is why even movie critics are generally willing to forgive them for having rather one-note characters and somewhat clichΓ©d stories. In short: they're a classic example of dueling franchises, and they're aimed at exactly the same target audience.

I'm old enough to remember when the third Mission: Impossible movie was just called Mission: Impossible III, with the official poster even abbreviating its title as M:I:III. Since then, the series has stopped putting numbers in the titles of its sequels, with the fourth movie being called Mission: Impossible: Ghost Protocol, the fifth being Mission: Impossible: Rogue Nation, and the sixth being Mission: Impossible: Fallout.

Why is that? It could be because the studio doesn't want to advertise the fact that the series has been running since the '90s, lest audiences worry that it's getting stale. It could be because their stories are almost entirely independent from each other (most people don't watch them for the stories, remember), and they don't want audiences to feel like they're missing something if they haven't seen the other movies. Or it could be because they really didn't want to call the sixth movie Mission: Impossible 6, since fans would inevitably abbreviate its title as "MI6"β€”which happens to be the name of the spy agency that James Bond works for.

Ever wonder why the people behind the Fast and the Furious franchise were perfectly alright with calling their sixth movie Fast & Furious 6, but the people behind Mission: Impossible insisted on calling their sixth movie Mission: Impossible: Fallout? I have a feeling that's why.

My James Bond Unpopular Opinions

I saw someone else do this and I thought I'd do it too as I have a lot of them. Here are some of them.

- Quantum Of Solace is the best Craig film

- Tomorrow Never Dies and The World Is Not Enough > Goldeneye

- The climax in Goldfinger, with the exception of the Oddjob fight, is pretty boring

- The Man With The Golden Gun is the best Moore film

- Goldeneye, Casino Royale, and Skyfall are all in my bottom five

Delete if not allowed.

I was watching Spectre last night and it got me thinking about which lesser known actors would make a good James Bond.

Of course there were loads of suggestions for the likes of Idris Elba, Tom Hiddlestone, Ewan McGregor, Tom Hardy...

But I was thinking of actors like Toby Stephens, Toby-Alexander Smith...

Who do you think?

Griffin, go watch the Roger Moore James Bond movies

I won’t say they are all good, in fact one or two are some of the worst in the franchise, but they are interesting and even at their worst they are bizarre.

There is a lot incredible set pieces and stunt work that I think actually holds up incredibly well.

Whatever your opinions on Roger Moore, he always seemed to be having a blast playing Bond.

Like the rest of the franchise, the movies are problematic in many ways regarding their sexual politics and race.

My Ranking Of Every James Bond Film

Here is my ranking of all 24 Eon-produced James Bond films. This changes basically on the hour as the task of ranking them is virtually impossible. Anyhow here it is, from 24 to 1 with some explanation for each film.

  1. Die Another Day

Just poor overall. The plot is dumb as hell, the characters are all stupid, the locations are too weird and unrealistic, as well as the CGI being painful. The score and the pre-title sequence are the only saving graces. Not much else to say.

  1. Spectre

As a film it's fine and I enjoy watching it however it's so NOT Bond. The blofeld brother thing is insanely ridiculous, and linking all the Craig films frankly makes them worse. Plus it's trying to be more than just a great spy film, making it overly personal. The pre-title sequence is pretty good, and the film is beautiful to look at, however basically everything else is poor. Also what the hell is that climax.

  1. Goldeneye

This is the most bland and unmemorable for me. Whenever I watch a Bond film, my instinct has never been to watch Goldeneye. Brosnan is decent but not as good as he is in the next two films, the villain is overrated in my opinion, the plot is fairly interesting however I feel like it's executed pretty poorly. There are also literally hundreds of plot holes too. Natalya is a very good Bond girl however.

  1. Skyfall

As a film, Skyfall is incredible. As a Bond film, it's tragic. Sam Mendes does an awful job here in my opinion, his own selfishness getting in the way of the tradition of Bond films, for example no gunbarrel at the beginning. Also it goes into Bond's past which I don't really like. Like Spectre it is shot beautifully and some of the scenes are great, namely the ones in Shanghai. Also, HOW THE HELL DID BOND NOT DIE IN THE PRE-TITLE SEQUENCE HE GOT SHOT IN THE CHEST AND FELL OF A BRIDGE.

  1. Casino Royale

This is objectively a brilliant film however I prefer the old style of filmmaking so I never tend to watch it over Connery or Moore. There are also some issues with it, like Craig looking like a blonde bodybuilder rather than a spy. I also don't like the reboot with it being Bond's first mission here, should have just changed the actors and gone for a more serious tone but kept on linearly with Die Another Day. Eva Green is a great Bond girl but I feel like the ending isn't as good as the similar one in On Her Majesty's Secret Service, so it never stands out.

  1. A View To A Kill

I definitely enjoy this film however admittedly it i
