I am also personally collecting Higurashi (open to any volume offers for volumes 6+) and Itazura Na Kiss (volumes 4-6 and 10-12).

I seriously cannot believe how well rated this anime is on MAL. I just came out of the spoiler episode thinking, what am I even watching?!

I picked it up on a whim because Hulu recommended it, and I thought the idea of an anime romance going from high school to adult life would be unique.

The male protagonist starts off really cold. He's handsome, wealthy, and very smart. Okay, so pretty standard.

The female protagonist starts off in the worst class in the school and could be summed up as cute, poor, and dumb.

Almost immediately, we get his cruel and public rejection of her love confession (which to be fair was superficial and shallow on her part because they had never even spoken).

However, soon, after her home is destroyed, they end up living together. Now, as an avid shojo and romance viewer, I assumed this was the part where the male protagonist would begin to soften. He would realize her good qualities and grow kinder, more human. In return, she would grow more serious and work hard at her studies. They would grow better together.

Hahahahha. Boy was I wrong.

Instead, they make each other worse. She devotes everything about her life to him. Spoiler Meanwhile, he decides not to find a partner who will stand up to him and challenge his arrogant superiority but rather to stay with her and treat her like a bug on the windshield of his life.

The dating part is almost entirely skipped as we soar forward toward spoiler It's so fast spoiler

Don't even get me started on how this apathetic about life and cruel male lead decides to become a medical doctor. The horror. I feel for his future patients.

All in all, I dropped it after the spoiler episode. I couldn't stand to watch this absolute tragedy continue to play out. Relationships are always made up of flawed people, but good ones make each person better.

Good people of r/anime, you deserve love and respect in your relationships. Don't settle for anything less.

Just finished my yearly rewatch of itazura na kiss and it is still by far the best romance anime I’ve ever seen and I’ve been watching anime since I was 13(I’m 19 now) I can’t say how many times I’ve watched it but it’s double digits. It has the perfect relationship progression that doesn’t take 25 episodes to say “I like you”, you watch their entire relationship from before they got together in high school to having a child and they don’t skip over too much, so you get to see all of this develop. The side characters are funny and they even get their own stories which you don’t see often in romance anime, as it usually just focuses on the one couple. The main character is adorable and not too annoying and though her love interest is a bit hard to like in the beginning as the story goes on his character develops a lot where you see him become a likeable person. 11/10 would recommend!!!

I really like Itazura na Kiss and the way that it hurts my heart when the male lead is cold or an asshole or they say things to hurt each other and there are misunderstandings and stuff.. I also liked Wolf Girl and Black Prince!

I wish it was as known more, like on Clannad levels and even maybe Horimiya levels. I don’t understand why it’s not very well known, especially since of all the adaptations there are for INK. Kind of makes me sad in a way.

I would like to see anime without harems, or at least let it be obvious who the mc ends up with, no annoying cliches, it would be nice to see the couple together before the anime ends, and interesting characters.

So, I just finished watching it, and I have so many mixed emotions. I am a little confused about why is this story so popular and dramatised into several media. And how are people okay with tropes like these?

Don't get me wrong, I know a lot of people love it and I don't want to shit all over it. But..

1. The main couple's relationship paradigm is pretty toxic. I felt like Kotoko lacked major self respect, and had no voice of her own. She even chose her career based on her guy's. She was always insecure because of the disproportionately huge gap between her and him and he didn't even do much to change those feelings in her even though he could clearly see what she was going through. I felt like he had a little sadistic side to him.

2. The main guy is such an asshole. I agree that their relationship is not actually abusive. But it's pretty toxic. He was always shitty to her, making fun of her, teasing her unrequited love publicly etc. And after marriage he clearly still looked down on her (for not knowing english?!!), didn't know how to handle his emotions, and hardly had much of an emotional improvement even till the end.

3. Can we also talk about how ultra unrealistic the premise is.. so I know it's an age old trope where the tsundere perfect dude softens up to a stupid girl who keeps trying. But that does not happen in real life! Firstly, guys like Erie don't exist. Even if they do, they're not mean just for the sake of being mean.

4. All the strong and smart women in this anime were automatically made evil. It almost seemed like, if you're forward, have a voice, and a brain in your head, you aren't a good wife material, because guess what, our hero needs a pea brained innocent girl who never wears any revealing clothes ( otherwise she'd be like 'those girls') and hardly is capable of getting anything done. Only then can he feel like he landed the best girl who feeds his ego.

The anime definitely had its cute moments. But I was pretty appalled in so many of the scenes. I hope that characters like Erie don't make girls watching these kind of animes set some crappy expectations from their future partners.

Can someone please suggest progressive anime/manga like Itazura Na Kiss. They went from highschol to even after having a child. I haven't seen any other anime/manga do that. Ive watched Kokoro connect, Nodame cantabile, Clannad, After Story, Kaichou wa Maid-sama. And many more.

This is a question I'm very curious about, personally I haven't seen every adaptation but, I've got my personal favs.

Miss in Kiss is by far my favourite (DINO LEE AND ESTHER WU <3) but I also enjoyed Mischievous Kiss: Love in Tokyo 2 and Fall in Love at First Kiss.

I've never watched the Korean ver. (Playful Kiss) or the original Taiwanese ver. (It Started with a Kiss), are they as good as everyone says they are?

The Thai ver. (Kiss Me) is a decent watch if you're looking for an adaptation that has more backstory and character development, however, to me it doesn't really feel like an Itazura Na Kiss drama.
