Resource: Collected posts about the pre-shot clock era (1954), either early NBA or pre-NBA

I'm realizing this sub has probably become the best resource for learning about OLD-school basketball topics (including over any one book, by Charley Rosen or otherwise), so I wanted to collect all those posts and discussions in one place for easier searching. I'm loosely defining this era as pre-shot clock (implemented for the 1954-55 season), but I will liberally include whatever from the 50s if it feels like it's part of this stuff. The in-depth knowledge of this time period really got ramped up over the past year or so, so to begin collecting these posts I went back into late-2020 and skimmed to now. Of course there were good discussions happening before then, but I'm not searching the entire sub history, so I went back 900 posts for my initial search.

Please let me know of any posts about this time period I might be missing, or if there's good info/discussion in the comments of a post I'm missing.

I'm not including player profiles about old-school guys simply because they're easily searchable at this link of old-school player profiles. Often those profile links are the older/first posts about them, but you will then know which players we have profiles for that you can then use the reddit search bar to locate newer posts about them. That being said, if I see an old-school discussion in the comments of a player profile that is bigger than just that player, I've included it. Also, I've linked this resource post in the Reference Posts.

Listed from recent to older postings:

Paul Seymour - early defenders

Biassatti/Hightower - early international players

Curtis Harris article on NBA's start as merger

50 Nifty Reading Challenge

Hi everybody! So I gave myself a reading challenge based off the 50 states: For each state I'll be reading a work by an author born in said state, a poet (all native Americans poets. I couldn't find poets for a few states tho so I instead went with a native american historical nonfiction for the states I couldn't find), a fiction, a nonfiction, a historical Nonfiction, and a young adult novel. So in total I'll be reading 6 books for each state. It took me a good while to find all the books I wanted for each category but I've finally done it!! That being said, I had the thought that it might be fun to get another category going- suggestions or favorites from everybody on here. So would everybody give me their suggestions of their favorite books set in each state, or just books that you think would fit perfect with this challenge, please and thank you!! I added my list below. It's a long one!

[OC] What would all-time rosters look like if everyone went home like LeBron in 2015?

TL;DR

Made all-time hometown rosters with original 30 NBA teams + 25 new teams to split populated areas and big teams (spreadsheet + map)

Player Pool and Team Pool

I used the top 969 players who have at least 10000 minutes played in their career.

Why 10000 minutes played? Because that's the lower standard set by Basketball-Reference to get on their ABA career leaderboard (15000 MP for NBA). I added George Mikan, because even though he hasn't played enough minutes, he's featured in All-Time ESPN NBARank and Bill Simmons Hall of Fame Pyramid.

I started off with the current 30 teams. To split up the Lakers and Clippers, I gave the Clippers their proposed Inglewood site.

As I looked at the map of player hometowns, I realized that there were:

  • some areas that had a lot of players, but few close NBA teams
  • some areas that had bloated rosters with too many players

Based off city population and arena size, I added 25 new teams.

  • I obviously had to give Seattle their team back
  • Birmingham, North Little Rock and Shreveport helped to split up the South
  • Pittsburgh and St. Louis were big cities without teams
  • Berkeley added to siphon off San Francisco
    • if I add Oakland, it takes away too many players
  • Anaheim and Westwood added in Southern California (Clippers & Lakers)
  • Winston-Salem and Raleigh to pare down Charlotte
  • Lansing to prune Detroit
  • 2nd Atlanta team in suburb of College Park
  • 2nd Washington team and Baltimore
  • 2 more teams in Chicago (Rosemont and South Side) + a team in Gary
  • 2nd Indiana team + Louisville & Lexington
  • 2nd Philadelphia team in suburb of Wynnewood
  • 3 more teams in the New York Area (Newark, Queens and Long Island)

The Method

I started off gathering hometowns due to this fantastic database by Reuben Fischer-Baum ([original article source here](https://deadspin.com/infographics-where-do-pro-basketball-players-come-from-5132615

SERIOUS: This subreddit needs to understand what a "dad joke" really means.

I don't want to step on anybody's toes here, but the amount of non-dad jokes here in this subreddit really annoys me. First of all, dad jokes CAN be NSFW, it clearly says so in the sub rules. Secondly, it doesn't automatically make it a dad joke if it's from a conversation between you and your child. Most importantly, the jokes that your CHILDREN tell YOU are not dad jokes. The point of a dad joke is that it's so cheesy only a dad who's trying to be funny would make such a joke. That's it. They are stupid plays on words, lame puns and so on. There has to be a clever pun or wordplay for it to be considered a dad joke.

Again, to all the fellow dads, I apologise if I'm sounding too harsh. But I just needed to get it off my chest.

REQUEST: Entertaining Literary Books

Thanks in advance for reading and for any suggestions! :)

My white whale... entertaining literary books. Well-written, award-worthy page turners that you can't put down!

I love to read genre books. And I love to read literary books. However, I often find myself in the mood where I want the stimulation of a genre book but with well written prose.

- Must be well-written but with a sense of excitement and adventure. No liberal arts college university professor's stream of consciousness or harrowing family sagas (unless they are exciting and full of adventure!)

- Nothing post-modernist or quirky such as Murikami, The Topeka School or A Visit From The Goon Squad. Solid, traditional storytelling only.

- OPTIONAL: Ideally a real-world story and not too fantastical/dystopian such as The Road, Margaret Atwood or Station Eleven.

- Nothing dense or overly challenging such as Wolf Hall or Crime & Punishment.

- Not looking for bestseller, flavour of the month lit fic such as Fates & Furies, Normal People or Little Fires Everywhere.

- Not looking for funny entertaining. For example A Confederacy of Dunces or Hitchhiker's Guide. (But a book that happens to be funny or witty is great!)

- No misery porn such as A Little Life.

BOOKS I HAVE READ THAT MOSTLY MEET THE CRITERIA:

  • The Underground Railroad, The Nickle Boys by Colson Whitehead
  • Jitterbug Perfume by Tom Robbins
  • The Cider House Rules by John Irving
  • Manhattan Beach by Jennifer Egan
  • Brookyln by Colm Toibin
  • The Goldfinch/The Secret History by Donna Tartt
  • The Amazing Adventures of Cavalier and Klay by Michael Chabon
  • Americanah by Chimanda Ngozi Adichie
  • All The Lights We Cannot See by Anthony Doer

Thanks again! (and hopefully somebody else will find something from the above books!).

Just because it's a joke, doesn't mean it's a dad joke

Alot of great jokes get posted here! However just because you have a joke, doesn't mean it's a dad joke.

THIS IS NOT ABOUT NSFW, THIS IS ABOUT LONG JOKES, BLONDE JOKES, SEXUAL JOKES, KNOCK KNOCK JOKES, POLITICAL JOKES, ETC BEING POSTED IN A DAD JOKE SUB

Try telling these sexual jokes that get posted here, to your kid and see how your spouse likes it.. if that goes well, Try telling one of your friends kid about your sex life being like Coca cola, first it was normal, than light and now zero , and see if the parents are OK with you telling their kid the "dad joke"

I'm not even referencing the NSFW, I'm saying Dad jokes are corny, and sometimes painful, not sexual

So check out r/jokes for all types of jokes

r/unclejokes for dirty jokes

r/3amjokes for real weird and alot of OC

r/cleandadjokes If your really sick of seeing not dad jokes in r/dadjokes

Punchline !

Edit: this is not a post about NSFW , This is about jokes, knock knock jokes, blonde jokes, political jokes etc being posted in a dad joke sub

Edit 2: don't touch the thermostat

Give me an unusual funny book suggestion, and I've made a list of everything funny I've already read with likes and dislikes to narrow down suggestions

Please help me find something funny to read that is not on every "top 100 funny books to read" list! I'm desperate. I somehow accidentally read 25 dour, tragic, serious books in a row this year and I need something a little lighter that won't also feel like a waste of time.

Stuff that usually gets recommended that I have already read and loved:

Catch-22 [This is the gold standard of American comedy for me]

Everything by P.G. Wodehouse [and this is my gold standard of English comedy]

The Hottest Dishes of the Tartar Cuisine by Alina Bronsky [I would be especially interested in other books that are about, or written by, people who are not from the USA or England, like this one]

Everything by David Sedaris

Everything by Kurt Vonnegut

The Hitchhikerโ€™s Guide to the Galaxy series

Good Omens and other Terry Pratchett books

The Princess Bride by William Goldman

In a Sunburned Country by Bill Bryson

The Importance of Being Earnest by Oscar Wilde

Three Men in a Boat by J. K. Jerome

Running with Scissors/Dry by Augusten Burroughs

Fear and Loathing in Las Vegas by Hunter S. Thompson

American Psycho by Bret Easton Ellis

I never see these recommended and I loved or liked them a lot:

Treasure Island!!! By Sarah Levine [A top example of 21stย century comedy]

Lucky Jim by Kingsley Amis [A top example of 20thย century comedy]

The Rose and the Ring by William Makepeace Thackeray [A top example of 19thย century comedy]

Then We Came to the End by Joshua Ferris

Hotels of North America by Rick Moody

Dear Committee Members by Julie Schumacher

Why Are You So Sad? By Jason Porter

The Basic Eight by Daniel Handler

Ladies and Gentlemen, the Bible! by Jonathan Goldstein

A Supposedly Fun Thing Iโ€™ll Never Do Again by David Foster Wallace

The Asterix comics

Stuff that usually gets recommended that I have read and thought were fine, but wouldnโ€™t necessarily seek more of:

Allie Broshโ€™s stuff

Hark! A Vagrant

I am America! (And So Can You) by Stephen Colbert

The Night Vale books

John Dies at the End by David Wong

Christopher Mooreโ€™s books

Everything else by Bill Bryson

Eats, Shoots & Leaves by Lynne Truss

Stuff that usually gets recommended that I didnโ€™t care for:

Anything by Chuck Palahniuk

Anything by Thomas Pynchon

Cold Comfort Farm by Stella Gibbons

A Confederacy of Dunces by John Kennedy Toole

The Dresden Files series

The Martian by Andy Weir

Sh*t My Dad Says by Justin Halpern

Most celebrity comedian me

- OPTIONAL: Ideally a real-world story and not too fantastical/dystopian such as The Road, Margaret Atwood or or Station Eleven.

- Nothing dense or overly challenging such as Wolf Hall or Crime & Punishment. Most older books would likely fall into this category.

- Not looking for bestseller, flavour of the month lit fic such as Fates & Furies, Normal People or Little Fires Everywhere.

- Not looking for funny (but darkly humourous or wry and inciteful is great). For example not A Confederacy of Dunces, Safran Foer or Hitchhiker's Guide.

  • Brooklyn by Colm Toibin
  • The Goldfinch, The Secret History by Donna Tartt
  • The Amazing Adventures of Cavalier and Klay by Michael Chabon
  • Americanah by Chimanda Ngozi Adichie
  • All The Lights We Cannot See by Anthony Doer

Thanks again! (and hopefully somebody else will find something from the above books!).
