As a Native American, I am glad Warren is proud of her heritage no matter how distant. The blood quantum system creates a delineation between enrolled and descendants. If this were Irish or Italian heritage nobody would think twice about the claims.

It is clear her family held onto that heritage with pride and passed that oral tradition down to her growing up. This native thing should be a non issue but the left and right bring it up, and as an enrolled Native American it feels a bit disgusting. Warren is not my first choice, but feel for her with these attacks.

Irish Descendants in season 4 episode 7.

There's a scene in the episode where the husband is noticing the products his wife purchased online while she's on the phone talking about the election, the music in the background sounds like a slide guitar version of "Let me fish off cape St. Mary's" by the Irish Descendants, but I can't find any info online. I'm from Newfoundland and that song has been etched into my psyche at an early age.

A question for the Irish descendants of Newfoundland

Hi all,

I was reading something very interesting the other day about how many from Newfoundland have Irish roots. I was wondering if there are still any Irish speakers on the island. Excuse my ignorance if this is a silly question!

Thanks!

Why is it so easy for Irish descendants to obtain citizenship?

You only need to have one Irish grandparent to qualify, and then once you're an Irish citizen this can be passed down from generation to generation, as far as I can tell, continually (I may be wrong there so please correct me if so). My question is, why does the Irish government have such lax regulations of who can obtain an Irish passport, even if they are 3rd generation Irish never having been to Ireland, given that most countries require you to be born within that country or have 2 parents from there. Is there some benefit to the Irish government to have lots of citizens abroad?

TL;DR: what does the government gain for having 3rd generation Irish diaspora obtaining Irish citizenship?

CMV: Descendants of slaves being proud of being black is morally equivalent to other ethnic groups being proud of their Irish, Italian, Chinese, Mexican, Dominican etc. ancestry

This is mostly in response to people who argue that black people shouldn't be allowed to have cultural pride in their blackness if white pride is considered taboo or wrong. I'm not here to argue the historical connotations of white pride or its link to racial violence and subjugation, or here to debate the morality of white pride movements. Instead, I'd like to discuss that for many descendants of slaves, blackness is all that remains of their historical cultural identity. Because blackness is the only real identity that a descendant of a slave could reasonably know, it is reasonable and moral to treat pride in that black identity similarly to other ethnic groups' pride in their own ethnic origin.

First, slave masters were not concerned with preserving the "inferior" cultures of their slaves. Much like the famous Kunta Kinte/Toby scene from Roots, slaves were stripped of their cultural African identities and forced into subordinate American identities. Slaves were not allowed to gather in large groups, which made the passing along of key cultural events and ideas more difficult. After several generations of this process, slaves formed a unique cultural blend of the remains of African tradition and borrowed elements from their white slave masters.

Unlike the immigrant experience for most ethnic groups, black slaves were not ghettoized by their nation of origin. Instead of being segregated by ethnic/cultural/national origin, black slaves were separated simply by virtue of being black. Black slaves on the same plantation could be living, working and having children with black slaves from distinctly different ethnic/cultural/national origins. One of the things that preserved many of the cultural practices of other ethnic groups that have immigrated to the USA, is this ghettoization. Immigrant groups became Americanized over time and the generations were able to more easily preserve their unique cultures because of their roots in ethnic neighborhoods and close cultural ties with their neighbors.

Finally, many descendants of slaves largely cannot pinpoint what part of Africa their ancestors come from aside from very large geographic regions (West Africa). These large geographic regions do not represent singular cultures, but rather incorporate numerous cultures and nations. As such, it is much more difficult for modern day black people to identify with specific African cultural practices, because they don't even know which specific cultural practices they oug
