The UK's Internet Service Provider Association has declared Mozilla an "Internet Villain" for trying to protect your privacy

The ISPA Awards are an annual event where they dish out a variety of awards (fastest broadband etc etc) and they also present a "Internet Villain or Internet Hero" award.

The media would have us believe that Mozilla and Google have 'sprung' that they enabling DNS over HTTPs (DoH) 'by force' and the Government and ISPs are up in arms because it will break the UK Internet safety Censorship & Surveillance apparatus.

The truth is that UK ISPs were warned many months ago that this change was coming in and that they should upgrade their services, the UK Government were even party to the IETF meetings back in October 2017 where the rollout plans were discussed.

Instead they waited till the last minute and then started running scare stories about how it's dangerous for kids and will prevent the fight against terrorism etc.

ISPA should be fighting for ISPs to honor our privacy and go back to just moving packets from A to B but instead they are trying to vilify the companies working to make the Internet a safer place for everyone the world over.

If this irks you even a little bit please provide feedback on their announcement; https://twitter.com/ISPAUK/status/1146725374455373824

Do you know if it's legal for a homeowner's association to control and allow only a specific internet service provider in the subdivision?

So I heard from neighbors that our HOA will let only Converge enter and setup fiber optic posts in the subdivision - no other providers can. But, in reality, somebody else might like to try other service providers. Is this perfectly legal in the country?

Internet provider customer service rep wanted to be on the phone call with me while my sister was having a medical crisis and be involved in the conversation

REMINDER: I am not the OOP, this is a repost sub.

Warning: Unsatisfying update

Original Post

Internet provider customer service rep wanted to be on the phone call with me while my sister was having a medical crisis and be involved in the conversation.

We use a common internet provider, big American company name. We have internet with them and my mom called them to upgrade to include cable TV into the plan. She came to a plan agreement with them and the rep proceeded to pitch the new mobile phone plan that the company is rolling out. After the generic sales pitch my mom told her that she wasn't interested in switching cell phone providers, the rep wasn't relenting. Finally after 40m she talked my mom into a "well maybe we'll think about switching, but let me get my daughter to discuss the plan because she's on the plan too and is the one who pays the bill".

[NOTE: This was all on speaker phone so both my mom and me could hear her and she could hear us both. Also my mom is over 70 and knows almost nothing of cell phones, especially smart phones.]

This is where I came into the conversation. The rep pitched the sales deal to me and rambled off a bunch of junk tier phones at ridiculous prices. I was upfront with her about how those deals were awful and we weren't interested in the slightest. She kept pitching more and more info at me, I kept telling her that I'm not interested and to just process the cable TV part of the deal. She outright refused to process the order for cable upgrades without us agreeing to a phone plan. I told her that if phones were forced as part of the cable package that we were also no longer interested in adding cable and to cancel the whole plan.

She then hit me with this number. "The deal was going perfectly until you showed up. I don't want to do business with you, put your mom back on the phone." I called her on her underhanded and patronizing sales tactic and told her that it wasn't going to work on me, I knew the deal was terrible and not worth it. She began clapping back with rude comments like "I don't understand why you're so against a good deal, you don't know good deals" and "please leave so I can talk to your mom alone, she was sensible".

I told her I wanted her name so I could report her. She ignored my request and kept on doing her s

Is there no alternative other than Virgin Media for adecent Internet service provider in Bristol?

Got an email today from Virgin saying they are putting my bill up and said I can leave them with no termination fees. I get over 100mb down from Virgin and can’t find another provider who can give me even close to that in my area. It looks like I’m stuck with them tbh as we do a lot of gaming in my house, sometimes 3 Xboxes on at once. Is VM the only real option for anything over 100mb?

From what I’ve heard/read Virgin Media is Bristol’s number one choice.

US internet service providers can eat my shit.

Dear Spectrum Internet and fios,

Rot in hell.

There are so many things wrong with 2 companies controlling the majority of the internet traffic of the United States but I’m not here to talk about that.

What I am here to talk about is the bullshit throttling of download speeds just to get us to pay more.

We already pay you $40 a month just to get β€˜100 mb/s’ internet, that is the highest internet level you offer, there is no reason to throttle us to pay you more, but here we are.

So it’s after Christmas, I got a bunch of money and I buy a couple of games on steam, sounds simple enough right?

No.

It took almost a full fucking day to download Half Life Alyx because my download speeds couldn’t break 10 mb/s. I still haven’t downloaded all of my games for that same reason.

After sitting there in my anger at my internets failure to do anything, I go onto google.com to see if there is better internet services.

I happen to stumble upon an article saying that the International space station got an upgrade to its internet and can send and receive data at over 600 mb/s.

Are you kidding me.

Are You FUCKING kidding me.

I have to suffer through single digit download speeds, sometimes dropping to kilobytes per second while fucking astronauts can send and receive data at almost a full gigabyte per second.

WHAT THE ACTUAL FUCK

What would you want to see from your Internet Service Provider?

Hi, so I own a fairly new ISP in the Durban area and we have been focusing a ton on customer service, network latency for gaming and quality routers/WiFi Coverage.

We have some rather large plans for 2022 but we are struggling to have an uptake in customers, due to other providers actually selling at a loss with a few bar behind them. We are trying to make a difference but need some assistance with ideas.

What would you want to see from your ISP, or rather, what would make you change over to us?

I am looking for a good, affordable internet service provider. Does anybody know of any?

Hello, I am looking for a good affordable internet service provider. I was with Xfinity but I am canceling (I had 100mbs for $84 a month). I live off of Floyd/Roselle by Raley’s in the Village One area. Does anybody know what provider is good for that location. I use the internet a lot for work, school, streaming movies and TV shows, news from apps like Sling TV and Netflix. Does anybody have any suggestions?

I am canceling Xfinity after being with them for almost 10 years. In past two years Xfinity’s customer service has turned horrible, rude, unprofessional and unhelpful. I could never get a person on the phone who spoke English or was competent in any way (I think they purposely hire non English speaking people who have a minus one IQ, who’s only profession in life are goat headers)! Xfinity constantly over billed me for services I never once had, and always took the wrong payments out of my bank account on the over the phone pay. They screwed up my whole account. I finally had it with them and canceled! I absolutely hate Xfinity now and I am NEVER going back to them nor will recommend them to anybody.
