Shamelessly stolen from this post; it makes me think that what if they actually do believe this and that it warrants investigation?
It was... dark. Xy'vina looked around as her eyes tried to adjust to the darkness. It helped that there were street lights around, but it was still much darker than she was used to.
"Is nighttime always so dark here?"
"Yes, why? Are you having trouble seeing?"
"I'm fine. My eyes just haven't finished adjusting yet."
Saying this, she walked right into the pole of a nearby lamppost.

["Do you have any exercise equipment on this ship?"], Will asked, figuring that since he was awake anyway, he might as well start trying to burn off some of those extra calories he ate the other day. His watch told him it was still nighttime, but he did not feel sleepy anymore, so whatever.
["Exercise equipment? To exercise what?"], Qu'tuni replied.
["I don't know what kind of stuff you have here, but I will probably need to start training my legs if I want to be able to walk around on your planet. Do you have anything for that?"]
This seemed to confuse Qu'tuni. ["Why do you need equipment for that? I thought you could walk freely in low gravity without any assistance?"]
["That is the problem. It is too easy. I need to start getting used to heavier gravity again."]
This only confused Qu'tuni more. ["Then you need equipment to simulate a higher gravity? Why did you ask for exercise equipment then?"]

"Are you sure you're fine?", Sarah asked as she helped Xy'vina get back up. She was trying very hard not to laugh at the situation. "I can go get a flashlight or something if it's too dark for you."
Xy'vina politely refused, saying her eyes were almost done adjusting.
Now, that on its own would not have stood out to Sarah, but it was starting to become a pattern. Every time Xy'vina looked like she was having trouble with somethin

Grand Admiral Charl snapped to attention, his hand crashing into his forehead in a salute so violent he had to hold back tears from the impact. The abruptness of the motion was at odds with the calm, smoothly artificial voice of the loudspeaker announcement, but he was not the only one panicking.
After all, itβs not every day oneβs job is evaluated by a god.
The Vessel of Ares strode onto the bridge. The stylized Grecian carbon fiber armor glinted dangerously in the pristine white light, sending brassy reflections dancing about the room. Charl held his salute until the Vessel stopped alongside him and acknowledged him with a nod.
βAdmiral,β the Vessel said in a low growl. βExplain.β
The word echoed with a hundred implications. Explain the state of the war. Explain the nature of the threat. Explain why you failed.
Explain why I am here.
Charl cleared his throat. His heart seemed to want to pound straight through his rib cage and into the open air.
βBorder skirmishes, my lord,β Charl said, spending at least half his effort on keeping his voice steady. βTheyβre a tribal people with whom weβve briefly communicated but dismissed as a threat. Though we share a habitational archetype, theyβre far more interested in interspecies warring than in outside encounters. Well, until now, of course.β
The Vessel stared at the dancing lights of the holomap in front of them. It did not speak.
βThey united, apparently,β Charl explained. βUnder the command of aβ¦ erβ¦ god of gods, as their leader is titled in their language.β
The Vessel tilted its head. βGods, you say? There have never been other gods before.β
Charl ducked his head. βApologies, my lord. That is the word they use. Our preliminary intelligence suggests it is a mere ceremonial title and not power manifested such as yourselves, butββ
βIf I may,β a voice interrupted.
Charl seethed, grinding his teeth. βThis is not the time for your theories, Captain. Apologies, my lord,β he said, turning from the insubordinate Captain Leer to the Vessel. βI will punish him appropriately at a laterββ
βLet him speak,β the Vessel said, raising a hand. βI would hear his theory.β
βThank you, my lord,β Leer said smoothly, taking another step forward. βIt is my understanding that no other species has been able to manifest a shared belief in the same way as humanity. This pattern, however, was never bound to hold, particularly with humans being asβ¦ flightyβ¦ as they are. It is my belief that a subsec

Bera was unimpressed. As a general matter, she tended to be unimpressed by all things, places, people and actions. She found it made day-to-day existence less exciting. She preferred less exciting. Exciting things tended to result in death. Currently, she was not looking to die. That was subject to change, depending on what the next assignment was. However, not wanting to seem entirely unsympathetic to her colleague, she did offer him a sympathetic shrug. "The Cause is going to do what it wants."
The hulking man sighed and then fell into a chair beside Bera, grumbling.
"You think we get our posting today?" Bera, asked, looking to pull Halvok out of his gloom.
It was Halvok's turn to shrug. "Hard to say. Rumor is a new Hell opened up. Spinward. Supposed to be a real grinder."
Bera nodded at that. "Heard the same. Was hoping you'd heard different." She took a sip of her own coffee and winced. It was shit. That was the problem with the synth stuff. Leave it to the Cause to suck the joy out of every last bit of living. It was enough to get more than a few thinking rebellion. More than a spell had passed since the last time Humanity had taken a whack at snipping the collar around its neck; might be time to see if the Cause still had the strength to yank the leash.
"They're gonna get a real surprise if they try to put me out there." Halvok slammed a fist on the carbsteel table in front of him, making a sound a bit too much like a rifle sounding off for Bera's liking. "I ain't even had a proper retrofit on the parts that they fucked up installing the last time."
Halvok was a tank. It was a nasty line of business. Front of the line, soaking up whatever got thrown our way so people like her could set up and dole out death. Most tanks didn't make it through one hell, much less seven. Halvok had been patched up more times than she could count -- his medchart must fill a full mainframe by now -- and they kept sending him in.
Because he was the best.
As long as he was up front, she stood a good chance of coming home. But she could see it wearing on him. Just because you were living didn't mean you weren't leaving bloody pieces of yourself out there among the stars. Halvok had kept it together, hadn't gone Hellmad yet, but Bera could s
