A list of puns related to "Hotel Alexandria"
Walked past the Alexandria Hotel today and noticed the wooden boards have been removed from the doors and windows
My buddy was taking the metro home this evening and a ton of those thugs where on the metro getting off in Arlington and Alexandria heading for the hotels.
Hey guys. Iβm looking for a pet hotel for my cat for 4 days. Is there anything at all in the Alexandria area? Any suggestions?
Everything I find is for dogs.
I just heard today that our local pub, The Alexandria Hotel, is to be knocked down to build a 4-story block of 28 apartments. This is one of the few remaining examples of a 1930's pub in Sydney that hasn't been renovated to death. It's so original that it's frequently used as a filming location for movies and TV. Sadly it's not officially heritage listed.
I'm not against development - I recognise there's a housing shortage and we've watched a lot of stuff around here get knocked down for apartments and not objected to any of it. But this is a piece of history. Will they not stop until every square inch of Sydney has a soulless apartment building on it?
The pub web site with a bit of history info is here. Check out the original interior!
The DA is here.
It might be a foregone conclusion, but we intend to fight it as best we can. Would love to hear from anyone with any experience at this sort of thing.
edit: If anyone wants to comment on the development, the best way is to write a letter. But the easiest way is to use this form - all comments will be delivered to council.
Hey all, I managed to get a better room elsewhere so my double queen room at the Hotel Indigo is available to anyone that wants a discounted room. It's for Thursday, Friday, and Saturday nights.
Address:
220 S Union St Alexandria, VA 22314 United States
Room cost me $374, but I'll give someone the reservation for $300. PM me if interested.
edit: added nights relevant.
Some of you may remember my original post about a development application to demolish the Alexandria Hotel and build apartments.
Firstly, just to be clear - I'm not against apartment development at all; there are literally thousands of apartments going up near this site, and I think that is a necessary part of our growing city. But an area that's soon to be the densest precinct in Australia needs social spaces, and the Alex fulfils a really important role of community backyard as well as being a historically significant connection to the past. 28 apartments is a drop in the housing availability ocean and in this case just isn't worth the cost to the community.
I said in my last post post that we intended to fight it as best we can, and have been doing just that. A group of us got together and did a letterbox drop and setup a web site, twitter account and facebook page to raise awareness and encourage people to submit their objections to council. (will post links in comments, they seem to trip up the spam filter)
And submit they did. Around 470 submissions from the public were received by council. We also had tripartisan support from a variety of Liberal, Labour and Greens politicians at Council, State and even Federal level! Confronted with overwhelming opposition, the developer just assumed their application would be refused and appealed straight to the Land & Environment Court even before the Council's public exhibition period ended! Although this might sound odd, it's a common developer's trick called "deemed refusal" and you can read more about it here. A date for the appeal will be set on August 18th.
Which brings us to yesterday's news. The Sydney City Council has placed an Interim Heritage Order on the hotel which allows up to 6 months to go through the full heritage listing process and hopefully preserve Alexandria's backyard for new and existing residents alike. The hotel can now be found on the NSW Office of Environment & Heritage list of [Items subject to an interim heritage order] (http://www.environment.nsw.gov.au/heritageapp/InterimHeritageList.aspx). Yay!
We're very excited about this, but of course it will be appealed a
