What was the single most helpful channel of knowledge for your journey in learning Chinese/Mandarin? New student seeking advice from experienced

If you had to choose one source of knowledge which helped move your knowledge forward the most, what would you attribute that to? It can be a YouTuber, Book, App.. anything really.

Currently using Duolingo Plus, and it's a great start.. I think? Not sure what else is out there or if there are better learning tools.

Thank you!

I'm a 20YO Chinese American who wants to improve his Mandarin. Anyone been in a similar situation?

I've had a decade of weekend mandarin school growing up. I hated it. I thought it was a waste of time, and I only did well because I memorized things for the exams and forgot it afterwards.

Now, my mom speaks usually English to me instead of mandarin and I don't speak to my father at all (poor relationship).

As I grew older, I realized that I want to become fluent. I can understand conversational mandarin fluently (as in I can understand what a conversation is about but not every word or phrase) and read some, but I can't barely write or speak it besides very basic conversational phrases.

I'd love to hear some success stories of people who have been in this scenario. I'm going to start taking classes and speak to my mom/relatives more. It'd be a shame if I couldn't pass the language to my kids.

what are some Chinese characters that lack Mandarin homophones?

硦 is the only one that comes to mind (and furthermore I don't think gei1, gei2, or gei4 exist as characters). I used to think that 倧 lacked homophones, but Pleco informs me that 汏 is in fact a character that has the same pronunciation...

which other ones are out there?

Netflix is really learning fast wow. they actually made a new chinese series called 'light the night' and stocked it full of handsome, tall, masculine asian men in very masculine roles, and its all in mandarin!

I have only watched the first 10 minutes of the first episode, but it seems like netflix has completely changed course. you can clearly see from the casting that they are learning from the big data, maybe even ripping data straight from aznidentity comments. I am floored by the complete 180 they are doing in their casting. where they used to be like hollywood, casting dweeby, weak looking, fake stereotypical asexual/bisexual AM's in side roles, in this they cast the exact opposite. just the opening intro was stock full of hyper-masculine asian men from start to finish. and whats even more shocking is they chose to have the dialogue in 100% chinese mandarin, the language that would probably trigger 50% of yt's. something is happening in the leadership netflix, they know. just like the aznidentity slogan, a new era seems to be dawning, and its a brave new world that none of us can fully grasp yet.

Chinese Singaporeans linguistic ability to converse in Mandarin

Since Secondary school, I have noticed that many Chinese Singaporean students were facing difficulties in conversing in their mother tounge languge and also failing their mother tounge exams in school. I have also noticed that the standard of Chinese amongst Chinese Singaporeans(particularly amongst the youngsters) has detiorated and as such have seen several posters(for a period of time) on encouraging Singaporeans to speak in Mandarin or some sort similar. Why is it that the standard of Chinese amongst youngsters has detiorated greatly recently

Any popular activities such as watching anime or popular tv shows in Mandarin? Or any other entertainment activity which we can do primarily in Chinese?

Me and my wife are practicing Mandarin together from scratch. We study for 30 minutes to an hour a day, and do 10-15 minutes a day where we only talk to each other in Mandarin. We would like to add another entertainment activity every other day or so such as watching an episode of a show in mandarin and pausing it when we come across words or phrases we don't understand to look them up. Are there popular shows or activities you guys would recommend? I live in the USA and there's not a lot openly available/advertised activities in Chinese lol.

[Incase it matters, I am using Pimsleur and she is using Rosetta Stone, we learn differently]
