Not DT, but I thought I'd share a video of Mangini already playing high cymbals/hats in the 90s (they are higher now though). Pretty cool stuff from Annihilator, sounds like Thrash Metal with some Prog/Zappa vibes. youtube.com/watch?v=oE2uD…

What's the best affordable lightweight cymbal bag with 5+ dividers and a separate hi-hat compartment? I'm just a part-time drummer (very part-time).

Edit: I have already spent several days doing my own research on this. That's why I'm here now with this post.

Update: I placed my order for the 24" Protection Racket Deluxe Cymbal Bag.

I need a light cymbal bag that's no more than approximately 4-5 pounds (~1.8 - 2.25 Kilos), and it must have 5 or more dividers and a separate hi-hat compartment. I'd also like the bottom exterior to be reinforced, and I'd like the handles to have that design that unifies both handles into 1 handle. Or, just 1 handle on the top if possible.

If I can get the bag from Sweetwater with a good financing promotion of 36 months or 48 months, then I'd be willing to have the price be as high as ~$150, maybe even $200 if the bag is worth it.

If I have to pay the full price all at once, then I'd like to keep the price down to as close to $100 as possible. Under $100 would be better, but I can stretch over $100 by maybe $10-20 if it's really worth it.

I have seen some while looking around online that have removable dividers. My current bag has 2 attached nylon dividers and it's all I've ever had, so I have no clue what I'd think about the removable dividers. I'm not sure why some bags have removable dividers. Maybe it's to clean them from time to time.

So again:

  • It must have 5 or more dividers
  • It must have a separate compartment for the hi-hats
  • I want the bottom exterior to be reinforced
  • I want the handles to have that design that makes them become one handle
  • It must be light. I don't want to be adding much weight to all the cymbals that I'll be putting in this bag. I will have to lift it up into and out of my Honda CRV for every gig, and I'll have to haul it up and down a flight of stairs at home before and after every gig. The less weight I add to my cymbals, the better. I know there are affordable bags on wheels, but those are much heavier. One of them is 20 frickin' pounds. I have a hard enough time with all my cymbals in my current bag and it's only about 3 pounds.
  • It can't be too expensive. I'm just a part-time drummer (and barely so). It wouldn't make sense for me to buy like say a $300 bag. I think even a $200 bag would be illogical for me, but again, I might consider it if it's really really really worth it.
  • I want it to be the best there is in my price range.

Thank you.

Edit: I'm trying to decide between these two right now:

How to get this type of rolling hi hat and cymbal pattern

Hi,

I've heard this kind of rolling hi hat and cymbal pattern that ends up being a really nice groove.

For example its throughout this track: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ABd82u-Y3wM

also on this track at about 4:20: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=9815P5KrKng

How do you achieve this? I've tried say cymbals on the off beat and 16th note hi hats but I can't seem to make it sound as groovy as in these tracks.

I'm trying to do this with a Digitakt by the way.

EDIT: Thanks so much for all the responses. Very good advice in this thread.

TD-17KV: Upgrade cymbals or hi-hat first?

Hey guys. So basically, the KVX was way out of my price range, but I was able to snag a TD-17KV for $875 new and jumped on it.

The main knocks I hear on this kit are about the hi-hat and cymbals, so I plan to upgrade those first. I figure I'm going to buy a VH-10 and a physical stand, as well as a CY-13R and a couple used CY-12C, to make it the same as a KVX. However, I can only really afford to do one of those options at this time, so which is more urgent?

If it has any bearing on the matter, I'm a new drummer. I have access to a friend's acoustic kit every other weekend, and have been playing on it when I can. I would eventually like to transition to playing drums in a band with said friend but can't really have my own set at my house.

Which replacement hi-hat cymbals for a beginning child?

Hi drummers, I need your advice!

My son is 7 years old and started drumming a year ago. He's enjoying it a lot and puts a lot of energy into it, so much so that the hi-hat cymbals are all bent and don't close properly anymore. He's using the Pocket Kit by Ludwig, which I assume is pretty low quality (but I know nothing about drums), considering that the whole thing costs $250.

I was looking for replacement 12'' hi-hat cymbals and saw many different kinds, and I have no idea what's suitable. The cheapest around here seem to be some Cajon ones (like Paiste PSTX 12" Cajon Hi-Hat Cymbals) , followed by Istanbul Mehmet (like Istanbul Mehmet Traditional 12'' Flat Drilled Hi-Hat Cymbals). I'd like to avoid spending more than the entire drum set just for this!

Are these OK to play rock/pop music without huge ambitions? Or what do you suggest?

Thanks a lot!

Hi-hat swiveling on cymbal rod

I recently purchased a Roland TD17KVX electronic drum kit (my first drum kit, loving it) and it came with a cheap Percussion Plus 900H hi-hat stand. I've gotten the VH10 hi hat tightened on there, but for some reason the hi hat swivels to the left. It can't go any farther right, because I tightened it to the right as far as it can go, but it easily swivels to the left. I'm wondering if it's a flaw with the stand or if I'm using it wrong. How do cymbal rods usually work? And what would be a decent stand to upgrade to?

Ways to fix "stretched" hi hat and cymbal sounds when resampling drum loops?

It took me many years to understand about keeping stuff in key, even when stretching (or how to transpose samples to other keys than the original), and a lot more time to learn how to frequency split drum loop samples for proper limiting and stuff, but something I can't seem to get down is how to fix the higher-range sounds from sounding "digitized" when I stretch a drum loop sample too far.

I like to run the same sample often in multiples of itself to add variation and such and emphasis - but on the longest stretched drum loop samples (usually anything more than double their original length, but sometimes even at double their length), there seems to be this terrible thing that happens in the higher frequencies. I think some of it may be able to be EQ'd out, and if the track is in an FX channel for just the hats and such to come through, I'd imagine some of the artifacts could be further cleaned up through various filters and such.

So, what I am asking, is, is there a known and accepted way to do this? Is there some kind of trick that helps instantly correct the problem without having to go through a lot of trial and error on my end? Right now I'm approaching the problem as something that I am sure other producers have an accepted workaround for, no need to reinvent the wheel.

Google searches and stuff for "fix stretched hi hats" isn't very helpful :*(
