Edit: Putting this at the top to ensure it's seen. I want to take back my selfish comment. I was heated when I was writing the post, and I don't think it was right of me to say that not wearing high-vis is selfish. I will, however, stand by my statement about it being stupid not to do something to protect yourself. This does not mean that it's not up to the driver to drive safely. Don't treat these things as being mutually exclusive
It's pretty simple, if you go out in the evening for a walk or a run, or for a cycle, especially in poorly lit areas, and you don't dress in visible clothing, you are setting your chances of getting hit by a car much higher than if you were to take precaution. Especially if you also wear all dark clothes. You are stupid to not protect yourself. Drivers cannot see you if it's dark and you're not wearing high-vis. The number of times I have had cyclists with no lights or high-vis cut across me, or joggers run across the road in front of me is scarily high. It's also selfish, because if you do get hit, your family will be the ones left to mourn you if it's fatal. You'll also ruin the life of the driver who literally could not see you until it was too late.
Edit: I was being pretty hyperbolic in suggesting that drivers can't see you at all. What I really should have said is that it is more difficult to see you if you're wearing dark clothes and nothing high-vis or reflective.
Edit: There are a number of people completely missing my point. I will lay out some clarifications below:

High-vis vests are the bare minimum we could use to be safe. If you're already wearing reflective clothing, or you're a cyclist with lights, I'm obviously not talking about you, so stop crying in the comments as if I've personally attacked you. This isn't about you.

Other things are absolutely more effective than high-vis vests, no doubt about it. But you can get a high-vis vest for free from the RSA, hang it up with your jacket and grab it on your way out the door. It is a quick, easy, free way to do SOMETHING to protect yourself. People chiming in with "but muh lights on the road", "but muh infrastructure" are entirely missing the point. This is about doing something small to take personal responsibility for your safety.

You can run, but you can't hide
A couple of times now I've been driving at night and seen a delivery driver crossing the street to their parked car, and they're dressed in very dark clothing.
Since this is a profession for you guys you're gonna be in the middle of the street a lot of than the average person, and you're more likely to accidentally get hit.
Drivers of other cars will also greatly appreciate it. Who doesn't like seeing obstacles in the road.
You can even write it off as a business expense
My force has stopped issuing the warm high vis waterproof (waterproof hi-vis with a sort of fleece lining). It was really warm and the one they issue now is just a waterproof version.
Does anyone know where I can buy what I was issued as I lost in a plethora of other jackets in a kit room and as I forgot to put my name in it I don't know which one is mine and can't claim it

I want to hear some wild stories about surveying next to roads. In a limited amount of time I have come to realize how careless drivers can be even when they see a high visibility vest or warning beacons on a pickup.

Last week I swung by a sporting goods store after my shift. Despite brushing off like 30 times I still have sand falling off with every step, my hair and beard’s a scraggly mess, there was even a bit of sand still on my face that I didn’t notice at the time, but fuck it, I wanted a pair of hiking boots.
Something to note, my sense of smell is quite muted (kind of a blessing, given all the sewer work I do), I also sweat like a whore in church with even the slightest bit of duress, and if it is any hotter than the depths of my cold black heart. I am not talking “my armpits get wet”, I am talking “it looked and felt like I pissed my pants 5 minutes ago but now all my clothes are equally soaked so it doesn’t matter” kind of sweaty. This combo leads to a lot of embarrassment, as I usually don’t realize how bad I smell.
So picture this, some 300 pound man in a high visibility city uniform, leaving behind a light trail of sand and smelling like corpse juice and disappointment, walks past you and disappears into the shoe section. Later on you notice him mutter curses under his breath, fiddling with his left boot while inadvertently shaking sand everywhere in the process.
Not even 2 minutes go by and you have an inquiry about something in the back, who do you ask? An employee in a marked, specifically colored uniform, or someone who is built like aged butter with pubes stuck to it (and probably smelt like that too)? Well, some middle aged guy thought pube butter man was an employee.
It took a full 15 seconds for him to realize that I wasn’t an employee, apologized, then walked off to the sports section with a look that almost made me want to write a joke about him going to look for really sturdy jump ropes.
