Books With Linguistic Themes

Here's a list of books, stories, and essays involving linguistics, language, and communication, taken from the comments for 5 reddit posts asking of books involving linguistics (including one post from r/linguistics), a Goodreads list, this list from a linguistic (includes lots of great nonfiction resources as well), and from the sf-encyclopedia on linguistics. Here are links to Wikipedia's articles for linguistic relativity (the Sapir-Whorf Hypothesis, although this is considered a basically disproven hypothesis) and conceptual metaphor (largely championed by George Lakoff; see Metaphors We Live By). Both are pretty relevant for fiction that explores how language might shape our thinking.

The list is organized by how frequently an author or work was mentioned from my 8 sources. I proceed each with how many they were mentioned in, so that number should roughly reflect how relevant an author or work is to the linguistics theme and how popular the work is. I've included basically everything mentioned, since I haven't read most of these, so that does mean some of them may only be loosely related to linguistics, or just do something that's interesting with language. I've included comments with the ones I have read on how much it actually incorporates linguistics.

  • 8: Ted Chiang
    • 8: Story of your Life (short story)
      • An iconic story, this is what's generally given as an example in the Reddit posts for what's being looked for. Also the basis for the movie Arrival.
    • 72 Letters (short story)
      • A little bit of a stretch, perhaps. Written names animate golems, with the name determining their attributes.
    • The Truth of Fact, the Truth of Feeling
      • About communication methods and memory, such as speech verse writing, so very relevant depending on how loosely you take the linguistic theme.
  • 8: Suzette Haden-Elgin (Linguist)
    • 8: Native Tongue Series
    • Coyoted Jones series
    • The Ozark Trilogy
    • The Judas Rose
    • Gentle Art of Verbal Self-Defense series (nonfiction)
  • 7: China Mieville
    • 7: Embassytown
    • The Scar (book 2 of the Bas-Lag series)
  • 7: Sam

[End-Of-Year bash!] The NewToReddit Encyclopaedia Hunt!

#The NewToReddit Encyclopaedia Hunt!

#New! With clues to all the quotes!

I’ve slightly altered 26 literary quotes from 20 famous authors and hidden them in some entries in our encyclopaedia! The quotes you need to find are hidden somewhere in the descriptive text of the entries, from books by the authors listed below. Any other quotes, partial quotes or Snowclones you might find from other authors not on the list below (e.g. β€œI regret that I have but one upvote to give.") don’t form part of this competition :)

  • Douglas Adams 3
  • Margaret Atwood 2
  • Ray Bradbury 1
  • Anthony Burgess 1
  • Lewis Carroll 1
  • Paulo Coelho 1
  • Charles Dickens 2
  • F. Scott Fitzgerald 1
  • Dave Eggers 1
  • Thomas Hardy 1
  • L.P. Hartley 1
  • Joseph Heller 2
  • Frank Herbert 1
  • Robert Ludlum 1
  • Sir Isaac Newton 1
  • George Orwell 1
  • Boris Pasternak 1
  • J. D. Salinger 1
  • Brandon Sanderson 1
  • J.R.R. Tolkien 2

Each quote is at least eight words long and all are easily googleable. The slight alterations I’ve made on some of them are the addition or replacement of literally either one or two words to relate the quotes to Reddit or Redditors. Some are easier to find than others, and one entry has two quotes to find.

There are 26 to find in all and more you find, the bigger the prize!

Example and Answer Format

To start you off, under the entry for New Reddit; Old Reddit you’ll see: β€œThe story so far: in the beginning, Reddit was created. This has made a lot of people very angry and been widely regarded as a bad move.” which is (mostly) from Douglas Adams: β€˜The Restaurant at the End of the Universe’.

How to Answer

Now, ONLY comment under this post the number you’ve found so far. If you find more, you can edit the comment with the new number. There’s no limit on how many times you can edit the comment.

So, the only answer I’m looking for now is β€œ1” which you’ll edit to β€œ2”, β€œ3” etc as you find more.

Don’t post your complete answers until you’re asked!

You’ll need to make notes somewhere, as the answer I’ll be looking for eventually is β€œN

Geelong Cats - VFL 2022 Pre-Season Update

2022 Pre-Season Update - Geelong Cats

There has been some experience that has left the Geelong Cats VFL program over the off-season and it will see them have a much more inexperienced side in 2022. The club will look to have another successful season after finishing in the top four in the incomplete 2021 season and will try to build on their seven-win season with their only lossesΒ being at the hands of the Casey Demons and Footscray Bulldogs.

Competition Updates

The Victorian Football League will return for the 2022 season on March the 26th and will continue to align closely with the Australian Football League Men's season for a 22 round season with each team taking 4 byes each. The Aspley Hornets are the only team to confirm their exit from the eastern coast competition with the remaining 21 clubs beginning to strengthen their sides for another run.

The salary cap has been increased by $20,000 for standalone teams to $220,000 while AFL and AFL-aligned clubs have received just a $10,000 boost to $110,000. The caps also introduce the ability to pay $10,000 of a playing coach's salary outside the cap while indigenous coaches implement a $5,000 concession.

The list size rules also remain pretty much identical to the 2021 rules with AFL affiliate clubs having a maximum of 30 players (15 development players, 15 primary listed players) while stand-alone clubs can have a total of 40 players on their lists (28 primary listed players, 12 development players).

Outgoing Players

Multi-year captain for the Geelong Cats and former AFL listed player, Aaron Black, called time on his VFL career after the 2021 season failed to return and will join Darcy Lang, who has decided to return home in a playing coaching role, and promising youngster Nicholas Burke (Port Melbourne) in big outs for the Geelong based side.

Black was ever so reliable for Geelong's defensive unit in 2021 but his impact came through his leadership and years of AFL experience with 57 senior games behind him and now over 100 VFL games, similarly, Lang's 64 senior games of experience for Geelong and Carlton will be missing in the new season but he was able to make a huge impact with ball in hand averaging 20 disposals over eight games and included a five-goal tally and 26 disposals in round 12 against Essendon.

Jackson Thurlow could also join the list of big out’s, in what would be shattering to the Cats, as conversations are held with Launceston Football Club in the TSL. There has

SERIOUS: This subreddit needs to understand what a "dad joke" really means.

I don't want to step on anybody's toes here, but the amount of non-dad jokes here in this subreddit really annoys me. First of all, dad jokes CAN be NSFW, it clearly says so in the sub rules. Secondly, it doesn't automatically make it a dad joke if it's from a conversation between you and your child. Most importantly, the jokes that your CHILDREN tell YOU are not dad jokes. The point of a dad joke is that it's so cheesy only a dad who's trying to be funny would make such a joke. That's it. They are stupid plays on words, lame puns and so on. There has to be a clever pun or wordplay for it to be considered a dad joke.

Again, to all the fellow dads, I apologise if I'm sounding too harsh. But I just needed to get it off my chest.

Just because it's a joke, doesn't mean it's a dad joke

Alot of great jokes get posted here! However just because you have a joke, doesn't mean it's a dad joke.

THIS IS NOT ABOUT NSFW, THIS IS ABOUT LONG JOKES, BLONDE JOKES, SEXUAL JOKES, KNOCK KNOCK JOKES, POLITICAL JOKES, ETC BEING POSTED IN A DAD JOKE SUB

Try telling these sexual jokes that get posted here, to your kid and see how your spouse likes it.. if that goes well, Try telling one of your friends kid about your sex life being like Coca cola, first it was normal, than light and now zero , and see if the parents are OK with you telling their kid the "dad joke"

I'm not even referencing the NSFW, I'm saying Dad jokes are corny, and sometimes painful, not sexual

So check out r/jokes for all types of jokes

r/unclejokes for dirty jokes

r/3amjokes for real weird and alot of OC

r/cleandadjokes If your really sick of seeing not dad jokes in r/dadjokes

Punchline !

Edit: this is not a post about NSFW , This is about jokes, knock knock jokes, blonde jokes, political jokes etc being posted in a dad joke sub
