With fog burning off in the morning, the skies gave way to a nice warm, muggy day. Competitors couldnβt have enjoyed better conditions for the 36 matches in 9 pairings that were to be played. The morning started with a media availability with teams intermingling and exchanging some sporting gamesmanship as they posed for pictures. For those good at counting, youβll note less than 35 golfers featured in the picture. Absences would play out to be monumental in determining the final result.
After beating some balls and remarking at the speed of the greens, the first match was summoned to the tee and competitors were off to discover just how much Pete Dye disapproves of a less-than-perfect golf shot.
Match 1: u/Ewhite12 & u/diggler_dirk (Freedom) v. u/gr8snd & Chris (Independence)
u/Ewhite12 and u/diggler_dirk began the battle with a tight match against fellow mid-20 handicappers u/gr8snd and his buddy Chris. After trading more than bogey on the first two holes Team Independence jumped out to the first lead of the day and claimed three of the final four holes to win the first point of the day in the fourball match.
