We all know that rock isn't quite as big now as it was a quarter century ago, but I got to discussing this question with my partner recently and keep coming back to it.
There is a lot of variety in the indie and alternative rock scene today, and plenty of big rock acts...but where are today's great solo rock stars?
Where are the David Bowies?
Where are the Peter Gabriels?
Where are the Eric Claptons?
Where are the Princes?
What happened to all of the great solo storytellers of rock?
Where is the next generation? My partner and I came up with a criteria of what today's great solo rock stars would be, as follows:
- Must tour and record under their own name, a pseudonym, or a name that implies a singular musician, but they can have a backing studio/tour band.
- Must be younger than 45 years old. No classic rock frontmen taking victory laps.
- Must be popular enough to have 1 Million listeners on Spotify or Apple Music (roughly) - this seemed like an easier metric than "X number of gold or platinum hits."
- They must play rock or something very rock adjacent. No straight pop-stars. No hip-hop. But pop rock and rap rock (dead genre, I know) gets a pass.
- Bonus points for having a very distinctive vibe, unique writing voice, or other noted idiosyncrasies.
Between the two of us we couldn't think of a single artists that fits all of the above criteria...although we came close in some regards...Ty Segall is a natural fit but he lacks the mainstream popularity. Same goes for Jim James: close, but not popular enough to be a big "star." Harry Styles is marketed as one, but he's obviously pure pop: not rock. Father John Misty ticks most of the boxes, but isn't quite big enough, and arguably too folk-oriented (we're thinking rock stars not just singer-songwriters). Kevin Parker would qualify if he didn't tour under the Tame Impala moniker...but he might qualify (Tame Impala IS singular, after all). Kanye would be a perfect match if he played rock instead of hip hop. And Thom Yorke makes sense...or he would if he weren't getting so old.
Hayley Williams, interestingly, came closest to hitting every mark of the modern "great solo rock star," but she only just started releasing solo material.

I'm surprised it hasn't decade.
I don't want to step on anybody's toes here, but the amount of non-dad jokes here in this subreddit really annoys me. First of all, dad jokes CAN be NSFW, it clearly says so in the sub rules. Secondly, it doesn't automatically make it a dad joke if it's from a conversation between you and your child. Most importantly, the jokes that your CHILDREN tell YOU are not dad jokes. The point of a dad joke is that it's so cheesy only a dad who's trying to be funny would make such a joke. That's it. They are stupid plays on words, lame puns and so on. There has to be a clever pun or wordplay for it to be considered a dad joke.
Again, to all the fellow dads, I apologise if I'm sounding too harsh. But I just needed to get it off my chest.
For context I'm a Refuse Driver (Garbage man) & today I was on food waste. After I'd tipped I was checking the wagon for any defects when I spotted a lone pea balanced on the lifts.
I said "hey look, an escaPEA"

I’ve been out of the country for a while and recently returned to discover that I’ve missed a few new expansions of Boss Monster. I’ve also learned that Boss Monster is not a well-liked game for many good reasons. So I’m here to say an unpopular opinion; Boss Monster is terribly awesome.
TLDR: It’s a fantastically unbalanced game that has all the right notes. It’s casual enough to have a chat while playing, crunchy enough for you to care about your decisions, has interesting player interactions and it makes for some spectacular moments.
I won’t go into the game overview much since that’ll take an age and you can find that online. Here’s just for a quick recap of the game as a refresher.
Everyone plays as a boss monster, seeking to build a dungeon to lure in heroes and kill them. You want to attract heroes in by matching the treasure in your dungeon to the symbols (treasure) on the hero. Each room has cool abilities and holds different kinds of treasure. If you have more of that given treasure than the other players, you attract that hero type into your dungeon. If you kill him/her, you cull a juicy soul (VP), but if you don’t, the hero wounds you and you’re one step closer to losing.
The game is simple and that’s great
Most of us like a bit of depth and crunch to the game, but it’s easy for us to forget that the average beginner finds that daunting or overwhelming. I’ve found Boss Monster to be highly approachable for novice board gamers as the rules are fairly accessible.
That’s not to say that there’s no crunch (as explained later) but there’s just enough to keep you entertained while giving you plenty of time to chit chat and chill. As any Catan veterans will know, once you become well-versed in that game, your average turn will look like this “Alright that’s an 8, so that’s a wood and a sheep for me. I have two wheat, I’ll trade that for a stone? No? No? Alright how about a brick for a stone? Sweet. I’m done.” *Turns to friend to make wood jokes while grabbing some more some hard rock from the resource pile from the next roll.
I find Boss Monster to have that crunch/chill balance. When I need to build a room, there’s just a few things I need to scan before I commit. What heroes are in the village that can I attract? Who else can attract those heroes? Can I kill that hero? That decision to build a room is actually surprisingly deep as I need to balance those needs but best of all, it doesn’t take a lot of mulling or time to
