A year ago I decided to dive in to this wonderful band's music going year by year and I saved versions that spoke to me to a Spotify playlist. Everything on there is my opinion of the best version of that particular song (of the available Spotify selection). I also used headyversion, this subreddit, and the documentaries to make sure I got the extra good ones. It's trimmed down to 40 songs, so its a pretty easy listen and perfect for getting someone into the Dead who hasn't heard them (I've used it for that purpose multiple times), and since it's chronological all the way from 1965 to the 90's I think that it tells the story pretty well.
