Now, if you aren't acquainted, Graham Nash was a member of The Hollies and then Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young. He has an incredible voice and seems like a really great guy.
He released his debut solo album Songs for Beginners in 1971 which was well received critically and did well on the charts, becoming gold certified. By 1973, relationships between other CSNY members were rocky and his previous relationships with Joni Mitchell and Rita Coolidge had gotten pretty nasty. Oh yeah, and there was some crazy drug use going on.
The result is Wild Tales released at the start of 1974, about a month before Neil Young started recording what most fans would point at as his masterpiece, On the Beach. I wasn't familiar with Wild Tales until recently, and I was completely taken by surprise. This album is a dark departure from Nash's previous happy, hopeful, hippie works and is full of the same brooding energy that we all love from On the Beach.
While I don't think Nash could write lyrics as well as Neil Young, or play guitar like him, it's still a fantastically well put together album. It wasn't well received by critics, but it took years for On the Beach to get the recognition it deserved, which only reached 16 on the charts after Harvest was the best selling album of 1972.
My favourite songs on Wild Tales that I think all of you would enjoy are And so It Goes (reminds me of On the Beach), Another Sleep Song (reminds me of Ambulance Blues) and Wild Tales (reminds me of Revolution Blues/Walk On).
Am I crazy or is this album that critics didn't like actually a secret folk rock classic? What do you guys think?
