Hello fellow PC gamers!

As many of you I too suffer from "old pc" syndrome. I didn't grow up rich, not even close so I have always strived for making smart investments into strong bang-for-buck hardware. As you all know this is very hard in the current market and, unless I'm missing something, I'm really unable to find a GPU anywhere near MSRP here where I live in the land of the Danes.

Because of this I started wondering how I could improve my gaming experience without changing any of my hardware and thought that the idea Kojima Productions had with the ultra wide presentation mode of Death Stranding Directors Cut could be on to something... I would like to share with all of you the solution I came up with to do something similar on PC!

Now, just as a preface, obviously it's not possible to significantly increase your performance without updating your hardware so please temper your expectations somewhat... That said I was able to achieve very playable and stable results at a decent frame rate while not reducing quality settings... There are, of course, some compromises but they do not significantly affect the experience, at least in my opinion, and, one of them, might even make it more enjoyable.

To sum it up I went from gaming at 1920x1080 60hz to 1920x920 50hz. I did this by using the Nvidia Control Panel to create a custom resolution and setting windows display settings to that resolution and refresh rate. In my limited testing this works in any game that runs borderless, either from the game settings or by setting it to windowed mode and then using an external application to force it into borderless mode. So far I've tested on Elex, Resident Evil 7, A Plague Tale: Innocence, Assassins Creed Odyssey.

What kind of experience can you expect from this? If you make some quick calculations you can expect that, broadly, the load should be about (1920x920 / 1920x1080) x (50 / 60) = 0.70987% of a 1080p 60hz presentation. Roughly this means that you're trading horizontal black bars (there is no image scaling) and 10 fewer frames per second for an increase of 29% to your frame time budget. Since there is no scaling you are still looking at a native resolution frame so image quality does not suffer. The more horizontal aspect ratio actually is nicer to my eye for a lot of games (1st/3rd person games mostly, for top down/strategy I prefer sticking to a full 1080p 16:9 presentation) and the 50 FPS is still very fluid and playable (obviously the most important
