German submarines U-66 (left) and U-117 were caught on the surface in the mid-Atlantic by a coordinated attack by TBF-1 Avengers and F4F Wildcats flying from USS Card, 7 August 1943. U-117 was sunk in the attack.

In 1915, a ship named the SS Iberian was torpedoed and sank by one of the German submarines named SM U-28. An explosion could be heard around 25 seconds after it had sunk, and debris was seen flying up.
