A post titled Wilder's title as the hardest hitting heavyweight in history is overrated and impossible to prove... Change my mind made by u/BuddhaDharmaShangha got me thinking about if there was a way to test this theory. I even remember seeing a popular r/boxing user u/CMILLERBOXER make the claim that fighters like Ortiz are harder punchers than Wilder, which intrigued me.

I wanted to investigate the claim of Wilder's punching prowess. Is it overrated or is it legitimate? Where does he stand in the list of all time great heavyweight punchers? The only way to get a factual answer is to take a look at the testimony of previous opponents and compare them. It's certainly not fool proof, but it's a lot more accurate than redditors or boxing fans' pure speculation. The list of roughly ranked hardest punchers I came up with is actually quite surprising. So...

Who are some of the fighters you'd consider to be the hardest punchers of all time, or even just harder punchers than Wilder?

Tyson, Foreman, Tua, Lewis, Lyle, Shavers, The Klitschko brothers, Bonecrusher Smith, Marciano, Liston, Joe Louis, AJ?

Lets start with AJ. Here are quotes from mutual sparring partners and opponents.

• Eric Molina: (When asked who hits harder between Wilder and AJ): “Deontay Wilder. Wilder could knock out a bull if he hit it in the head. It’s just a matter of ‘when’ in that fight.”
• Richard Towers: (Mutual sparring partner AJ, Wilder and Fury) "Deontay whacks the hardest I've ever been punched... He punches a lot harder than Joshua."
• Lenroy Thomas has sparred with Joshua, Wilder, Ortiz and Povetkin: When asked who hit the hardest of the four, Thomas answered: "By far, I give it to Deontay."

So its fairly conclusive to say Deontay hits harder than AJ, or Ortiz, Povetkin and even Whyte as mentioned below.
