I'm Arthur Grace. Former photojournalist for Time and Newsweek. I covered four presidential campaigns (1976-1988) as well as the Carter, Reagan and George H.W. Bush administrations. I recently released a book on my good friend Robin Williams titled Robin Williams: A Singular Portrait. AMA!

Hi Reddit,

I’m Arthur Grace! During my thirty-year career as a photojournalist I worked as a contract photographer for Time magazine and as a staff photographer for Newsweek. My photographs have appeared on the covers of both of those magazines as well as Life, New York Times and many others both here and abroad. I worked on assignment on four presidential campaignsβ€”'76, '80, '84 & '88β€”and covered the Carter, Reagan and George H.W. Bush administrations.

My latest book is titled Robin Williams: A Singular Portrait (1986-2002). Robin was a good friend of mine from the time we met while I was on assignment for Newsweek in 1986 continuing over the next three decades.

I’ve published an additional four photographic books: Choose Me: Portraits of a Presidential Race, Comedians, State Fair, America 101. My work has been exhibited in galleries and museums throughout the United States and abroad, and my photographs are included in the permanent collections of the J. Paul Getty Museum, the National Portrait Gallery at the Smithsonian, and the High Museum of Art, among others.

Feel free to ask me anything about Robin, politics, photography or whatever else comes to mind! I only ask that you respect that Robin was a close, personal friend of mine.

Why did George H. W. Bush only come in third in the Iowa caucus during the 1988 US presidential election?

Were a lot of people surprised at the time? The Republican President’s own Vice President finished in third place behind Senator Bob Dole and televangelist Pat Robertson in the first major contest in the Republican presidential primaries.

What went wrong for Bush that year in Iowa?

[US] What helped George H.W. Bush win the 1988 presidential election?

I'm interested in how George H.W. Bush won the US presidency in 1988 after eight years of Ronald Reagan? There seems to be a trend of the party in the White House not managing to hold the presidency after its two terms are up. Why was 1988 different?

Jesse Jackson wins the Democratic nomination over Michael Dukakis in 1988 and defeats George H.W. Bush to become the nation's first African-American president.

These were some of his campaign plans if elected, keep in mind the Senate had a democratic majority in 1988.

creating a Works Progress Administration-style program to rebuild America's infrastructure and provide jobs to all Americans,

reprioritizing the War on Drugs to focus less on mandatory minimum sentences for drug users (which he views as racially biased) and more on harsher punishments for money-laundering bankers and others who are part of the "supply" end of "supply and demand"

reversing Reaganomics-inspired tax cuts for the richest ten percent of Americans and using the money to finance social welfare programs

cutting the budget of the Department of Defense by as much as fifteen percent over the course of his administration

declaring Apartheid-era South Africa to be a rogue nation

instituting an immediate nuclear freeze and beginning disarmament negotiations with the Soviet Union

giving reparations to descendants of black slaves

supporting family farmers by reviving many of Roosevelt's New Deal–era farm programs

creating a single-payer system of universal health care

ratifying the Equal Rights Amendment

increasing federal funding for lower-level public education and providing free community college to all applying stricter enforcement of the Voting Rights Act and

supporting the formation of a Palestinian state.
