No cell, no sell. We ain't selling no matter whose name you invoke. Bezos, Griffin, Cohen, Gandalf, Darth Vader - it doesn't fucking matter.
Just read some really entertaining, but bat shit crazy, stuff about Bezos being the Big Bad. It's been karma whored on every GME sub. Really inelegant and clumsy. Not subtle. And really quite funny.
Tl:dr New bad guy. Hate them now instead of the old bad guys.
ELI5. Buy and hold and ignore the bollocks.

A "weird" name vs. a "common" name. How do you feel about it? I was given a rare name by my parents, and I have always loved it. It's nothing like Gandalf or Moontear or anything like that, just an unusual name. And I have seen many reactions from annoyance to jealousy. Your thoughts/feelings?

Insight behind Gandalf's name in the south. IncΓ‘nus.
Was re-reading the UT, the Istari section when I stumbled upon this obscure yet mind-bending hidden gem of lore. It means North-spy. Searching this on the gateweay a bit (since I have no clue where I can find anything related to this), it says:
>It is a Quenya form adapted from a word in the tongue of the Haradrim: InkΔ-nΕ«sh (or possibly InkΔ-nΕ«s)
Also, there's a Quenyan term given below:
> in(id)- ("mind") and cΓ‘no ("ruler, governor, chieftain")
Thus, 2 questions arose in my mind after reading all this stuff.
-
How is it possible that a word, possibly originating amongst the Haradrim, has any connection to Quenya?
-
Why is this the only, I dare say, of Gandalf's names that doesn't translate into Grey Pilgrim/Wanderer/Man etc? Instead it seems to attach a far more "sinister" role to Gandalf as some sort of mind controller, presumably influencing people to do his bidding. What could he possibly have done down south to earn such a name, quite different from the northern names he got?

[Lord of the Rings/Tolkien] Is there in universe etymology for Gandalf's name?
Was wondering if there was any direct translation or significance to Gandalf choosing or being called that name when in his mortal form.
I know Gandalf goes by many names including OlΓ³rin, LΓ‘thspell, Mithrandir, and that most of those names have an in universe translation or etymology. For example LΓ‘thspell meaning "ill news" or Mithrandir being "the grey wanderer".
Is there any significance to the name 'Gandalf' in universe? I know that Tolkien derived it from the norse for "elf with staff" or something, but I'm specifically curious about in middle earth terms.

TIL In Norse mythology, Gandalf was originally a dwarf appearing in the 'Tally of the Dwarves' within the poem VΓΆluspΓ‘. In his fictional works, J.R.R. Tolkien, was going to name the leader of the dwarf party after him, but chose Thorin Oakenshield instead and made Gandalf a different character.

I was browsing Old Norse names for my book, and I stumbled upon Gandalf. Apparently it means 'an elf with a wand' in Old Norse. I had no idea.
Maybe Gandalf was originally intended to be an elf, is there any info about this?

How come Gandalf didnβt remember his name when Aragorn & co. met him in Fangorn Forest?
I just watched βThe Two Towersβ film and I am confused as to why Gandalf doesnβt remember? He says βGandalf? Yes... thatβs what they used to call me. That was my name.β But right before that when he was pretending to be Saruman he mentioned how Merry and Pippen met him the day before yesterday. Wouldnβt they have called him Gandalf?? How is it that the first time he hears his name as the White Wizard is when Aragorn says it?
