Hi... I'm fairly new to GML, so apologies if this is explained elsewhere.

I'm trying to get an arrow to float nearby a character, according to a pair of values created in its create event: arrowDirection, arrowDistance. When I create the character, the values are:
arrowDirection = 90
arrowDistance = 60

I want the arrow to be floating 60 pixels above his head.

Then, in the draw event, I've got code that looks more or less like this:

var arrowX = x + (dcos(arrowDirection) * arrowDistance)
var arrowY = y + (dsin(arrowDirection) * arrowDistance)

draw_sprite(spritePodStandRight, 0, x, y);
draw_sprite(spriteArrow, 0, arrowX, arrowY);

However, instead of the arrow floating above his head, it's floating under his feet. If I change the value of "arrowDirection" to 270, the arrow floats over his head. Problem solved, except... why? Isn't the normal "direction" of 90 straight up and 270 straight down? Is there something funny with the way I'm doing the trig, or the gml, or have I gotten something else wrong?

I don't want to step on anybody's toes here, but the amount of non-dad jokes here in this subreddit really annoys me. First of all, dad jokes CAN be NSFW, it clearly says so in the sub rules. Secondly, it doesn't automatically make it a dad joke if it's from a conversation between you and your child. Most importantly, the jokes that your CHILDREN tell YOU are not dad jokes. The point of a dad joke is that it's so cheesy only a dad who's trying to be funny would make such a joke. That's it. They are stupid plays on words, lame puns and so on. There has to be a clever pun or wordplay for it to be considered a dad joke.

Again, to all the fellow dads, I apologise if I'm sounding too harsh. But I just needed to get it off my chest.

I wanted to share about how my practice experience let to the material I'm teaching in the Progress of Shinsight course I'm currently launching. This is about my practice experience but if you want to find out more about the course, you can do so here. I'll also include some links below of videos I made on the subject.)

One of the funny things I didn't expect when I started teaching full time in 2013 was that my practice would become so totally melded with teaching. It's weird because how I usually share my practice experience with someone else is by showing them what I did. This is how I teach.

1. Mahasi x TMI - When I was at a Mahasi style retreat I became really interested in how I could use the TMI "balance of attn. and awareness" as the samadhi practice and how this related to the Mahasi "rising and falling" technique. In finding a way to combine the two, this unlocked a much deeper level of equanimity with the practice. I also remembered that Mahassi had actually had a big emphasis on doing awareness heavy metta practice extensively before all that rapid noting practice. This higher awareness focused practice might have strongly mitigated any dark night material in a similar way that TMI reports lower intensity dark night experiences.
2. Shinzen's path through PoI - I was introduced to the Progress of Insight from a very Shinzonian perspective. This is very different from how Mahasi taught. In the Mahasi system, you aren't supposed to direct the mind to any particular object aside from the arising and falling of the breath. It's a kind of open awareness practice. With Shinzen it's open season and you can do whatever you want, based on whatever goal you want. What I wanted was to experience the Progress of Insight materials so it involved a kind of reverse engineering of each insight. I built all of this on a set of meditations Shinzen guided in his old audio book the 2010, Science of Enlightenment, which included meditations. In those practices, he taught "non-self" by having you note everything in this moment that seems like "me" or belongs to "me." Then you note everything that seems like "not me..." Eventually you note anything that feels like "both." As simple as this sounds, the effect was profound and I got a very deep glimpse into non-self. This may seem like a small difference but it's not.
